The youth hostels in France are known as Auberges de Jeunesse.
Besides Hostelling International you should also look for the local
auberges de jeunesse which are plentiful. If you're in France don't
look for the words 'Hostel' you should look for 'Auberge de Jeunesse'.
Once I took the train from Paris to Lille, a marvellous place, got off the train and asked a beautiful French girl where was the nearest Hostel. She pointed at a hotel. 'No,' I said, 'I am looking for a hostel.' She didn't know what a 'hostel' is. So I stayed in a hotel, a very nice one, ensuite, TV, etc. Then started looking for a hostel. I went looking for one in the evening before finally realising that 'hostel' in French is 'auberge de jeunesse'.
