Skiing into the valley, superb bus connections, superb private accommodation near the lifts. Simply wonderful. The runs are very varied, ideal for beginners and experts, ideal for family. No queues at lifts, mostly chair lifts. We stayed at a private house to which we could ski at the end of the day and it was only a 5-minute walk to the lifts. We got by on around £1000 for five people for two weeks, which was excellent as this included five liftpasses, ski hire for two of us and all food and accommodation. Can't wait to go again.
Advantages: beautiful Disadvantages: range limited
Austria is new to me and my wife and I tried this resort for the first time last year and we were captivated, by the charm, atmosphere and beauty of the place. The skiing is only Ok but for a week and with one expert and one beginner it provided us with everything we needed. The pistes are picturesque and of long length. The snow was fabulous. The moutain facilities were fantastic and a hell of a lot cheaper than France or Switzerland. All in all ...

...returned from a week in Zell Am See. (March 2007)
Unfortunately there was not enough snow for us to ski in the resort all week. However, the nearby glacier resort of Kaprun is only 25 minutes away by bus and the lift pass covers both areas.
Plenty of bars and restaurants and not all overun with tourists. If you're prepared to explore and try a few out, you can find some real gems.
Good looking town so make sure you take your camera.

Advantages: breathtaking views, beautiful scenery Disadvantages: open during summer only
Do you like mountains? Do you like to enjoy breathtaking views of the Alpine scenery, glaciers with snow in summer, and lovely small rural villages along the way up the mountains? If the answer is yes, then this is something for you.
The Alps, Austria, Grossglockner Road - the very first Alpine highroad which was opened in 1935, is certainly worth a visit.
If you arrive via Salzburg, drive to ZellamSee, then to Bruck, where the Grossglockner Road officially starts. If you arrive from the other side of the mountains (Carinthia), drive to Heiligenblut and start from there (which is what I did when I was there two years ago).
A word of warning first: You cannot use the Grossglockner Road during winter, because there is too much snow (up to 5 meters of snow on the road). In May, they start to remove the snow so that the Road can ...
Advantages: Great apres-ski, large ski circuit Disadvantages: Patchy snow record, can get rowdy
Saalbach-Hinterglemm is actually two resorts (as in two separate villages) that share a ski area and have 'branded' themselves as one resort. Saalbach is a traditional style village with typical Austrian church and lots of hotels for the large numbers of German, Dutch and British tourists.
The resort is situated in a valley near to ZellamSee (another resort!), in the Salzburg province of Austria. It's about 1.5 hours (only because of windy roads!) from Salzburg airport. Many of the transfer buses from the airport go through Germany (via Berchtesgaden) to reach this valley from the airport, as this route is (apparently) easier for buses. This region has lots of peaks, but this valley in particular is quite green and meadowy most of the year rather than steep and rocky.
The village has a good infrastructure with an underground ...
