...When we visited northern Spain a couple of years ago, Burgos was right at the top of the list of places to visit. This beautifully preserved medieval town is a fascinating destination, and not just for the many pilgrims who visit the imposing cathedral on their way to Santiago de Compostela along the Way of St. James (wandering around the old town, you will notice many of the scallop symbols set into the pavement or into the walls of houses to guide the faithful along the right path).

The king Philip the Third married to the Princess Margarita from Austria, thus he decided to build a monumental gate to commemorate the marriage. It was called "Puertade Alcalá" (Alcalá´s Gate), due to it had been built in the road that finished in Alcalá de Henares, nowadays declared World Heritage City by UNESCO.
As Carlos the Third, also known as "the best Major of Madrid" did not like the design, he ordered to demolish the gate, and another gate, bigger and nicer was built following the planes of Francesco Sabatini, the favourite architect of the King. This gate that has become a symbol of Madrid was finished in 1778.
