An impartial view of zermatt
Advantages: Fantastic Food, shops, atmosphere, scenery and snow Disadvantages: Nothing compared to the advantages
...transfer from Geneva airport to Zermatt can be done completely by train, or more commonly by bus to the village of Tasch, and then on by train. The journey takes roughly three hours to Tasch by bus, and then it’s only a ten-minute train journey to the centre of car-free Zermatt. For a shorter transfer, fly to Sion, only one hour away from resort. Facilities in Zermatt include a snowpark on Klein Matterhorn for youngsters and a halfpipe for snowboarders ... ...However, if you want to cut costs, remember the general rule, the higher up each mountain restaurant is, the more expensive it is. To make a big saving, buy your lunch from the village Supermarket, and then take it up the mountain with you in a backpack. There is also a very reasonably priced Youth Hostel in the village for those who are keen to save on accommodation. For further information, or to view the weather conditions and the majestic Matterhorn, ...

Not for the beginner.
Advantages: Trafic free, swiss run lifts. Disadvantages: Price not for a new skier
I visited Zermatt for the ski season, it is one of switzerlands trafic free resorts so to get there you should be taking a train at some point although there are also taxis availible throughout the day and night. It may be trafic free but do watch out for the horses and milk floats wizzing round the resort.
You will find quiet a few high priced clothes stores here, lots of yummy cafes and every other shop sells ski hire (my favourite being glazier ... ...to look down from but Zermatt does not come cheap and although you can learn to ski here people dont find it easy and if you do go for the yellow coats not the red locals.
Looking for a hotel my favourits were the Buterfly, Schweiserhof and the Alpenhof.
The best time of year for me was new year, everyone gathers in the town square and lets off as many bottles of champagne and fireworks as possible.
You'll find good nightlife here and an extensive ...

That snowy day
Advantages: Scenery and skiing Disadvantages: Isolation of the town
The train ride up to Zermatt begins with a glorious trip through the streets of Brig. The train climbed steadily upwards but due to the poor weather, my view was obscured. When I arrived in Zermatt I noticed that it was car free, which adds to the quiet and cosy atmosphere. But one has to be carful of the electric carriages, which ferry people to their hotels. Zermatt is a really beautiful town and as the large snowflakes it really created a cosy ... ...centred around skiing so there is little opportunity for any other activities, though the ski runs looked brilliant. The other disadvantage is the isolation of Zermatt, which makes forays into the rest of Switzerland difficult. In my opinion the best part of Zermatt is the amazing view of the Matterhorn. ...

Scenic capital of Europe
Advantages: Superb scenery, classic Switzerland, no cars Disadvantages: Expense!
Zermatt is in the southern part of Switzerland and is reached via Rail or Car. However if you bring the car be prepared to leave it parked a couple of miles out of town and use the electric vehicle service to get to Zermatt. No petrol/desiel vehicles allowed in town.
Zermatt is straight from the holiday brochure picture scene with large wooden faced chalets/hotels everywhere. Hiking out of the town quickly brings to to Heide country with many walking ... ...glaciers and back comfortably in one day.
The pictures of the Matterhorn with clouds whisping around the summit are still etched in my mind.
The place is extremely expensive (more so than even other parts of Switzerland).
I would recommend visiting Zermatt in summer as I did. ...
