The transfer to the Zeus is roughly fifteen minutes from the airport. So no long bus journey which was really nice.We then arrived at the hotel at 2:30am local time.
We were greeted by a happy smiling face, given our key,and we then proceeded to our room.So what then did we do next? Go to the bar of course!!!
THE ROOM
I reserved a twin room, which is those strange single beds. However we always shove them ... ...pool did have an interesting Zeus mosaic on the bottom,I dont think it was thousands of years old though.
The snack bar was particularly good. Its a shame that the tables under the snack bar awning were shabby perspex jobs. They offered drinks, snacks and the usual.A Greek salad would set you back 3 Euros, which is very cheap indeed. There was also a selection of burgers, chips, soft and alcoholic drinks.
As you probably all know I have not long returned from holiday. After browsing the internet for a cheap deal,we finally decided on Kos,Kefalos in particular,as it was stated to be a quieter part of the island. So after a bit of pondering we booked it through Thomson.co.uk.The few weeks soon passed and we were whisked away to the airport,as chauferred by my Dad.Luckily for us there were no delays and our flight departed on time from the glorious Luton airport.
Goodbye Cloudy old England..as we flew into the sunset.By this point I was so excited I was almost at exploding point. Not only do i love flying, and insist on getting as drunk as I can whilst on board, but I just love travelling.I am like a wide eyed five year old,its just always new and exciting for me.
Anyway, after the luggage carousel breaking down twice ,and the little Greek man coming out and swearing at it,we were hearded onto our tourist buses and taken to our designated resorts.

THE ROOM
I reserved a twin room, which is those strange single beds. However we always shove them together,in case of any romantic encounters. These were in the centre of the room.Chris had a bedside table his side of his bed,as did I. Next to my bedside table, was actually a dressing table and stool,as well as a power point to plug anything in that you wish.
To the left of the dressing table was the balcony. We had a set of lockable patio doors, and then outside those two shutters. These had slats in,so you could sleep with the shutters shut, and have a bit of a breeze as well. The shutters were a beautiful turquaise marbled pattern.I did consider ripping them off the hinges and taking them home. But I thought they may notice. The shutters were also lockable.Once you pulled them shut, you pulled down a little lock in the middle of them, which had the words locked, and unlocked in English, which was handy.
Going out onto the balcony we had an ash tray, two plastic patio chairs, and a plastic patio table. The balcony was a maximum of six foot in length,so not enough room to have a dance really. The ultra handy thing that I loved, what screwed onto the wall was a collapsable towel rail.Fabulous, great fpr drying off your towels or swimsuits after frolicking in the Sea.
The bathroom was basic,we had a toilet,a stand in shower with a shower curtain, and a basin. Also a mirror, and four white towels. Two hand towels and two bath towels, which were hung on a rail behind the door. The bathroom was about 6ft square,so not enormous, but plenty of room just to do your business. As you came out of the bathroom directly opposite was a huge storage cupboard, with extra blankets.
Your room key does have to be slotted into the wall to activate the electricity. So if you come back to your room pissed as a fart, before you leave, make sure all the lights are switched on,otherwise you cant see anything. And when you are a little tipsy, things are extra confusing!
The room was painted white, nice and fresh and simple. With a single picture facing the bed of a scene of a Greek port. The furniture was all matching dark wood, which was varnished to the hilt. We also had a travel iron and a hairdryer, which were both fairly new. Also two little tablets of soap in the bathroom. We did have an air con unit on the wall. However the hotel charged 5 Euros a day to use it.So we just chose to sweat really.
All in all I was impressed with the room. The beds were made with clean, white, crisp sheets.Believe me,I smelt them! You then had your top like, thin sheet thing, which had flowers on it,blue ones. The linen was changed every three days, the bed was made every day,and the room was cleaned around 10am every day.I must admit to flushing the toilet paper though...as no signs told me otherwise. So if the island of Kos now has a sewage problem..it may be down to me flushing vast amounts of toilet paper.
THE LOBBY/BAR
Absoloutely stunning! Although you did have to get your key yourself most of the time,as the desk was unmanned most of the time! Then again it was a family run hotel,so you could just go and grab someone from the snack bar.Who would bend over backwards to help you.Safety deposit boxes were 25 euros a week, and a late check out fee was 20 euros also. They also had a notice board on the left hand side of the main reception desk with useful information about local bus times, and room information.
The lobby and bar area was split into two areas.Smoking and non smoking, yes you whingy non smokers even have somewhere to sit and not have a deadly habit! They were gorgeous cream leather sofas, which were brand new. These were sort of centred around the TV in the corner.Pah you say,but when I was away London was bombed. So it was a focal point for the whole of the hotel,as 99% of the guests were British.A terrible heart, wrenching moment for everyone involved.
The other side of the lobby, nearer the bar had single leather, horse shoe shaped chairs for us smokers.Complete with simple round tables for our ash trays ,lighters and fag ash.The floor was black marble, sexy, cool, shiny black marble. It was like a Roman Villa. It was always spotlessley clean.Obviously, they took a lot of care in its apperance,as it must have cost a bit to do!
Then we go to the lovely bar,my favourite part of the hotel. The front had kind of pebbley, blue and green tiles that looked like bubbles, and halogen spot lights.Around fifteen bar stools, which slinked around the whole bar which was C shaped in all. The bar was clean un cluttered, and at the back had wavy mirrors. And for some reason one picture of a donkey.Hmm!
The bar staff were fantastic. So friendly and such a laugh.Even though I did burn my finger on a flaming Sambucca. You could chill out and relax and talk to other holiday makers, whilst relaxing with a huge cocktail. You also did get plied with free drinks, most Sambucca which is pretty much the same as Ouzo.So it tastes of aniseed.Cocktails were a flat rate of 4Euros,as was a Jack daniels and ice.Mythos, which is a fairly nice lager beer was 2 euros a bottle. One thing we did notice wasthe more you bought the cheaper the drinks got.
They had every possible liquor, spirit you could want.Just dont expect many beers from home. And dont forget, their measures are huge. And make sure you get them to weld a penis onto your cocktail swirler with a lighter.I am easily pleased.
THE POOL AREA
The front of the hotel faced out onto the pool. With sets of double doors to open out onto the area. You had a shady area with decking furniture made of wood. And to your right was the snack bar, which was under a rather shabby looking terrace. The pool however was surrounded by palms, giant greek pot things,Beautiful flowers, and of course sun loungers and holiday makers. The pool however was really very deep, about half way it drops off sharply to giants proportions so its best to watch your step.I may only be 5ft 4in but my other half who is around 5ft 10 in even agreed with me. There was a small gated off area with a shallow pool for children.I did notice that there was a life belt tied onto the gate area, which was reassuring.Dont expect a lifeguard though,so its best to keep a keen eye on your little ones. The pool did have an interesting Zeus mosaic on the bottom,I dont think it was thousands of years old though.
The one thing that I did like was that they did not over charge you,the supermarkets and our hotel charged the same price for say,a bottle of water,or Coke.
We did stay on a bed and breakfast basis. This was served between 8 and 10am,at the snack bar.It consisted of,tea, coffee, orange juice,a bread roll, jam and butter. That was it!So don't expect a lavish fry up as the Greeks dont eat breakfast. The pool area was kept very clean and tidy. And there were plenty of sunbeds for everyone. The pool itself was also spotless,it had filters which made a farting noise which kept the other half amused anyway.
HOTEL LOCATION/SPEC
The Zeus is set back from a main road, about 20 metres. It has three floors, the basement, these rooms are set down into the ground. The first floor, and then the second floor.Just a few marble steps separated these. Checkout times were 12am,unless you booked a late checkout, you could stay in your room until 6pm.We chose to do this as our flight was a late one. The hotel has 53 rooms, according to Thomson. However I didnt count them personally. It is obviously a white washed building,as it has to be by Greek law. It is set on a little plateau if you like,so you can go in the pool and you dont have to feel like you are being watched by passers by. The road is not what I would call noisy, however it is mostly the scooters that people insist on thrashing to death, that make the most noise. Behind the hotel is a steep hill. There are no other houses or hotels behind it,so no noise from any other places. The gardens contained Rose Bushes, and Chris thought he saw some potatos growing an a nearby tree.I think he may have been drunk. There was a vegetable growing,it may have been a marrow but I'm not sure. Also expect lots of sparrows chriping away in the next field.
Just over the road, five minutes away is the nearest supermarket. As is the beach.Whereas if you turn right out of the hotel you are faced with a long road, brimming with tavernas,a couple of supermarkets, and a couple of cocktail bars.Everything is in easy walking distance. Whereas the harbour of Kamari bay would take about an hour to get to.We hired a quad,so this was no problem.
MY OPINION
I was so impressed with the price that we paid to stay here and the level of service we received.I could do nothing but recommend it.The cleanliness was fantastic. All of the staff made you feel nothing but welcome, and I enjoyed getting drunk and leering at the younger male members of staff.Much to the bemusement of Mr Fluff. The one down side which takes away a star, was the door slamming. The rooms were situated down a cavernous corridor, with a fire exit at one end.And everyone would just let it slam.I almost fell out of bed one morning with the noise, and I wear ear plugs! I must admit when I was going back to the room late and a little tipsy,I would slam the door for fun.But then the people getting up early the next morning would do the same to get us back..so you couldnt really win. This was the only downside. If you can cope wih doors slamming late at night or early in the morning, then you'll be fine. I must admit it didnt really bother me,only when I was feeling a little delicate! I would definitely go back again.Kefalos was a beautiful place, and the lively town of Kardamena is only a 20 minute drive away.Kos town is roughly one hour away. However local buses are very cheap and there is a timetable in the lobby.
For a relaxing holiday I would definitely recommend Kefalos. For jumbo Cod I recommend the restaurant Rainbow!
Advantages: Excellent location, Very welcoming! Disadvantages: Bathrooms a little cramped but this is common place in Greek hotels
...return. We stayed at the Zeus and will be doing so again in October. ROOMS
The rooms are spotlessly clean with a large balcony or terrace (we had a terrace). On the website it does mention that some rooms are "semi-basement" we had one of these and it just meant that the wall of our terrace was only slightly higher than ground level. But it was a lovely sun trap in the afternoon. Bathrooms aren't huge, which is to be expected, but they are perfectly ... ...expect from a more pricey hotel but perfectly adequate. You can always ask for an exrtra pillow if one is not enough.
STAFF
All of the hotel staff were excellent Zak and his family will do evrything they can to ensure you have a great holiday. The guys behind the bar are good fun and always very polite. And I could not the fault the cleaners, they worked so hard, from morning till night, but always had time for a smile!
HOTEL IN GENERAL
