Port country

Advantages: Wine, walking in the hills, wandering round old towns
Disadvantages: Little entertainment, scant sophistication, few facilities

If there?s a better place in Europe to wait for a train than Pinhao, I?m yet to discover it. This is not a comment on the town, which is a bit on the scruffy side, but you don?t much notice the town from the railway station. Your eyes are drawn to the neatly-kept flowerbeds set into the platform and the murals formed of blue-and-white azulejo tiles that decorate the ticket office, depicting every stage in the growing and transporting of grapes for port wine. Looking around, you see some of the scenes replicated in reality, with vineyards climbing the slopes on either bank of the Douro, while the river winds away among them on its journey to the sea, a journey taken in the past by fleets of rabelos, the flat-bottomed barges designed to navigate the rapids with their barrels of wine. Eventually, a hoot sounds in the distance ...

Cabin on the beach for £6 a night!

Advantages: Great rooms, scenic location, Peaceful
Disadvantages: Maybe to peaceful?

Koh Phangan is a small island located off the Eastern coast of Thailand. We arrived, as many people do in Bangkok after spending a few days in the capital we made our way down the coast by coast to Koh Samui which is just a short boat hop away from Koh Phangan. We spent a week on the island relaxing and choose this nice complex to stay in, so here is my review. We arrived from Koh Samui via a high speed boat journey, which cost a couple of quid into port on the island. From here we simply boarded a shared mini bus taxi which was going in our general direction on the island. This again cost very little, but you can haggle down the price a little bit if you choose. How did we hear of this place? We booked most of accommodation for our trip online. For many of the Asian places we visited, we simply booked the first night. We ...

Peppers Beach - Expensive, but you do get what you pay for.

Advantages: Very high quality, very modern, clean, beautiful hotel!
Disadvantages: Cost

television. The bedroom also had a balcony. The bathroom had a walk in shower with frosted glass wall. (whoever was in the bedroom could see the silhouette of the person in the shower, nice affect!) There was also a washer and dryer. Everything was new looking, modern and very clean! THE POOL The pool was quite cold, but was truly beautiful. It had a waterfall and lapped up to a small man made beach. The sunbeds were large and very comfortable and you could always get one as the hotel didn't seem at all full. Probably because theres so much to do around Cairns and Port Douglas that hardly anybody spent any time in the hotel itself. SURROUNDINGS There's the beach which is a very short distance away and shops are a short walk too. But for the other activitiess e.g. rainforest walks, coc farm etc, it is definately advisable to ...
