I hadnt been to the Zoo in a few years and was very excited (bless me, I was worse than the kids). I was unsure of the prices and assumed that for the four of us it would maybe cost around £17 or so. Overall I would recommend Belfast zoo. Think it is a great day out for both adults and children and also doesnt cost the world. If you ever come to Belfast, go on, ... more
Normally myself and my boyfriend use the weekend to go mad but last weekend we didnt and on Sunday morning we got up and actually felt pretty 'NORMAL'. It was a beautiful day and the sun was shining and I said to him "lets go to the zoo". He thought I was joiking first of all but when he realised I was serious he said "ok, lets go" and we did.
Off we went. Myself, Michael, Collum (my son) and my niece Caitlin.
Now I am pretty lucky where I live cause I am not that far away. It is only at the other side of Belfast. Even if you were to come to stay in Belfast and were to stay central you still only have a bus journey costing you about £1.10 which I think is excellent.

Well I was wrong. £12.50!!!! I thought this was excellent. Prices are worked out £5.00 for an adult and £2.50 for a child. Children 3 and under get in free. (Caitlin is 3). Children are given booklets containing a map and a journey called 'Sammy snakes adventures'. They also receive a sticker to be stuck onto the booklet once the journey is completed. This booklet is very colourful and great for kids and their stimulation to carry on with the journey in the zoo.
Animals we saw..............
Nile Lechwe Bongo Malayan Tapir Free Ranging Tamarin Flamingo / Wallaby Waterfowl / Pelican / Cormorant Ring Tailed Lemur (these are so cute!) Mhorr Gazelle Sitatunga Red Kangaroo Spider Monkey Spectacled Bear Girafee / Zebra / Ostrich Asian Elephant Camel Emu Meerkat Marmoset Francois Langur Tamarins MOnkeys Chimpanzees Temmicks Golden Cat Gorillas Cheetah Lion Tailed Macaque Red Panda Vicunga Sun Bear Red River Hog Red Ruffed Lemur Tigers African Wild Dogs Lions Penguins White Tailed Sea Eagle Californian Sea Lion Short Clawed Otters Birds (lots of them) Prarie Dogs
Think I have included all........Anyway also within the grounds of the zoo, we have a restaurant that serves hot & cold food. This is situated at the bottom of the park. We also have a cafe sort of thing situated at the top (a very good walk to the top). This serves cold food and refreshments only, such as sandwhiches and yogurts, and cold drinks etc. Prices in all food areas are average. Nothing outragious. (thank God, eh?)

Advantages: Lots to see, even a farmyard and reptile centre Disadvantages: All uphill -- can get tiring for little legs
...at the bottom of the zoo to get some food in our tummies to set us up for the long walk up to the top.
First we visited the Farmyard to see the Pigs, horses (my personal favorite), donkeys. Once my mum came along too and one of the pigs which had recently given birth jumped up at her, lets just say she has never been too close to a pig again. lol
Also there is a reptile house next to the farmyard, which homes Tarnsula'spiders, snakes and lizards, ... ...their pens and into the Zoo grounds, keep your eye out they are so sweet and pop up everywhere.
I haven't been to Belfast Zoo in a few years now but believe not much has changes and thats a good thing too, as i'm sure it has held a lot of childhood memories for a lot of Belfast born and bed folk not just me.

Advantages: Free admission to the zoo for a full year Disadvantages: The initial outlay is just over the cost of two visits
...For many years now Belfast Zoo has been at the forefront of breeding wild species from all over the world. No longer is Belfast Zoo just a place to stare through iron bars at captive animals.
New enclosures, matched as closly as possible to the animals natural habitat as possible, means that animals can be viewed in surroundings suitable to their needs. Nesting on the side of Cave Hill, Belfast Zoo can easliy be reached from Belfast by car or bus. ... ...hill on which the zoo is situated. Now, for a small fee, electric buggies are available for hire, though it is wise to phone and book these, this cost is offset by the fact that disabled persons gain free access to the zoo. There are public talks during the summer, a Saturday club for children, and special events throughout the year.
For the best value I strongly recommend the 'Annual Membership' as this gives free admission for a full year, and ...

Advantages: Lots for people to see and do Disadvantages: Quite hilly and wear something warm if not sunny as it is open to the elements
The BelfastZoo is set in the beautiful Cave hill area, from the top of the zoo there is such a view over the lough and Belfast. When you arrive at the zoo there is quite a steep approach and inside the zoo is quite hilly too which is not great for people with walking difficulties. There is an electric train which travels all the way round the zoo so you dont have to miss out. Prices our reasonable and disabled people go free.
The first things you encounter when you enter the zoo are a kids farm on the left hand side there kids can see a number of animals, donkeys, cows, goats, pigs and piglets snakes, bats, also in this area there are lemurs which run free it is wonderful for kids and adults alike.

Advantages: A good day out for families and fractious mothers. Disadvantages: If they keep losing them at the current rate, there'll be no animals left.
It could be argued that modern zoos are multifunctional in a way that the Victorians, (who were largely responsible for developing the concept from private collections) simply couldn?t have conceived of. Zoos conserve, protect, educate and maintain. At their most fundamental, though, zoos can be summed up thusly: they keep the animals in. Predictably, it is at this most basic of requirements that BelfastZoo fails. Spectacularly so, in fact. Less of a zoo, more of a free range menagerie, really. The worrying thing is, their propensity to misplace the livestock is a vital part of what makes this zoo so cheerfully eccentric and worth visiting.

Advantages: Some great animals, reasonably priced. Disadvantages: very steep hill
. My first impression was that it seemed well maintained. Although it was busy, there didn't appear to be too much rubbish about. Hedges and plants looked in good condition. The only downside was that there was the remnants of an old hall close to the entrance. It looked like it may have been grand at one time, but had become derelict. I read later that Pink floyd had played there years ago, but it was damaged buring the troubles in Northern Ireland. However, Belfast city council are seeking funding to do it up again. I think that this would give the zoo a better look.
BelfastZoo is one of the top attractions in Northern Ireland, receiving more than 295,000 visitors a year.
Located in north Belfast, the zoo's 55 acre site is home to more than 1,200 animals and 140 species. The majority of the animals are critically endangered in ...
