Normally myself and my boyfriend use the weekend to go mad but last weekend we didnt and on Sunday morning we got up and actually felt pretty 'NORMAL'. It was a beautiful day and the sun was shining and I said to him "lets go to the zoo". He thought I was joiking first of all but when he realised I was serious he said "ok, lets go" and we did.
Off we went. Myself, Michael, Collum (my son) and my niece Caitlin.
Now I am pretty lucky where I live cause I am not that far away. It is only at the other side of Belfast. Even if you were to come to stay in Belfast and were to stay central you still only have a bus journey costing you about £1.10 which I think is excellent.
Belfast Zoo is situated at the top of the Whitewell / Antrim Road. From Belfast City centre we are talking approx 4 or 5 miles.
When we got there.............
I hadnt been to the Zoo in a few years and was very excited (bless me, I was worse than the kids). I was unsure of the prices and assumed that for the four of us it would maybe cost around £17 or so. Well I was wrong. £12.50!!!! I thought this was excellent. Prices are worked out £5.00 for an adult and £2.50 for a child. Children 3 and under get in free. (Caitlin is 3). Children are given booklets containing a map and a journey called 'Sammy snakes adventures'. They also receive a sticker to be stuck onto the booklet once the journey is completed. This booklet is very colourful and great for kids and their stimulation to carry on with the journey in the zoo.
Animals we saw..............
Nile Lechwe Bongo Malayan Tapir Free Ranging Tamarin Flamingo / Wallaby Waterfowl / Pelican / Cormorant Ring Tailed Lemur (these are so cute!) Mhorr Gazelle Sitatunga Red Kangaroo Spider Monkey Spectacled Bear Girafee / Zebra / Ostrich Asian Elephant Camel Emu Meerkat Marmoset Francois Langur Tamarins MOnkeys Chimpanzees Temmicks Golden Cat Gorillas Cheetah Lion Tailed Macaque Red Panda Vicunga Sun Bear Red River Hog Red Ruffed Lemur Tigers African Wild Dogs Lions Penguins White Tailed Sea Eagle Californian Sea Lion Short Clawed Otters Birds (lots of them) Prarie Dogs
Think I have included all........Anyway also within the grounds of the zoo, we have a restaurant that serves hot & cold food. This is situated at the bottom of the park. We also have a cafe sort of thing situated at the top (a very good walk to the top). This serves cold food and refreshments only, such as sandwhiches and yogurts, and cold drinks etc. Prices in all food areas are average. Nothing outragious. (thank God, eh?)
Also within the grounds of the zoo there is a park which is VERY child friendly. Collum and Caitlin played here happily for ages both before and after seeing the animals. There is also a shop selling goods from the zoo and shops in and around selling drinks and ice cream, etc.
Overall I would recommend Belfast zoo. Think it is a great day out for both adults and children and also doesnt cost the world. If you ever come to Belfast, go on, give it a try, you may even like it!!
Hope you have enjoyed my op! Kellso :-) xx

The only zoo that I have been to is the one at Flamingo Land.

Lovely op. We used to go to zoos a lot before I got ill. There are some very good ones in Norfolk that are into the conservation of endangered species. Penny

Advantages: A good day out for families and fractious mothers. Disadvantages: If they keep losing them at the current rate, there'll be no animals left.
