Well I remember when I was a young girl, i'm talking about 4 - 11 years my Grandfather would take me out almost monthly for a trip to Belfast Zoo, and as my little Bro and Sis got older they got to join in the fun.
We would get up really excited as you do when your that age at the prospect of seeing all the wild animals and would pretend to be Lions and moneys all morning. My Grandad would get all our coats on and we would catch the bus into Belfast City hall, where we then took another bus up the Antrim/Whitehall Road to the Zoo.
We would start at the little shop at the bottom of the zoo to get some food in our tummies to set us up for the long walk up to the top.
First we visited the Farmyard to see the Pigs, horses (my personal favorite), donkeys. Once my mum came along too and one of the pigs which had recently given birth jumped up at her, lets just say she has never been too close to a pig again. lol Also there is a reptile house next to the farmyard, which homes Tarnsula'spiders, snakes and lizards, and other such animals.
Outside was the Pink Flamingos, in the large pond also ducks and other water birds. With a fantastic park to play in at this point. My grandad would push us on the swings and rope swing, the playpark is wood chipping and the apartus is made from solid log material, and the park is enclosed.
Walking further up the park you will find Lamas, an Elephant house and Giraffe's and Zebras all within close proximity to each other.
One of the best features has to be the sea-lions and polar bears whose pens are next to each other, you can watch them swimming underwater as well as going up top and watching them on land in both cases.
The have monkey's, Tigers, lions, apes, the list is endless.
O' and there is the beautiful little prairie dogs who burrow out of their pens and into the Zoo grounds, keep your eye out they are so sweet and pop up everywhere.
I haven't been to Belfast Zoo in a few years now but believe not much has changes and thats a good thing too, as i'm sure it has held a lot of childhood memories for a lot of Belfast born and bed folk not just me.

Advantages: A good day out for families and fractious mothers. Disadvantages: If they keep losing them at the current rate, there'll be no animals left.
