Gone are the days of small barred cages with bored animals pacing up and down. For many years now Belfast Zoo has been at the forefront of breeding wild species from all over the world. No longer is Belfast Zoo just a place to stare through iron bars at captive animals. New enclosures, matched as closly as possible to the animals natural habitat as possible, means that animals can be viewed in surroundings suitable to their needs. Nesting on the side of Cave Hill, Belfast Zoo can easliy be reached from Belfast by car or bus. Previously the disabled were at a disadvantage, because of the hill on which the zoo is situated. Now, for a small fee, electric buggies are available for hire, though it is wise to phone and book these, this cost is offset by the fact that disabled persons gain free access to the zoo. There are public talks during the summer, a Saturday club for children, and special events throughout the year. For the best value I strongly recommend the 'Annual Membership' as this gives free admission for a full year, and has the advantage that if you happen to be passing and have an hour to kill, you can just pop in to see your favorite animal, or if you suddenly find you have a day to spare when funds are short you can pack a picnic and enjoy it in safe surroundings. Just about membership before you pay your next admittance, as it also covers your admission for that visit.

Advantages: A good day out for families and fractious mothers. Disadvantages: If they keep losing them at the current rate, there'll be no animals left.
