A few years ago we planned to go to Canada and cross the Rockies and then cruise to Alaska to celebrate our Ruby Wedding and retirement. But as my husband got voluntary redundancy last October we decided to bring the celebration holiday forward to this summer, why put off something that we can do now! We emailed a travel agent who specialised in Canadian travel and literally said what we wanted and what could they offer. The flight to Calgary and returning from Vancouver was with Zoom.
I hadn't even heard of Zoom, my husband said it was a low cost flight. Knowing it would be a long flight I was somewhat concerned as my experiences with Easyjet and Ryanair haven't been very positive. So after doing some research online we asked the travel agent to upgrade our seats to Premium.
Advantages of a Premium seat **********************************
Firstly we were able to choose our seat, you can do this in Economy at a charge of £15 return. The seat pitch was 36ins. instead of 32ins, may be not a lot of difference but it was very roomy, inside passengers can squeeze past, useful if the other person is asleep. The seats were leather and quite comfortable and when tilted back you still had room . Both have a hot meal and a snack served, but Premium also has complimentary alcoholic drinks, and Economy has to pay - £3.00 each drink, plus we were given a bottle of water at the start of the flight. Increased baggage allowance from 20Kg to 30kg, an important factor for us as we were to be away for over 2 weeks and needed evening wear for the cruise. If you are over the allowance there is a charge of £10 per kilo! Zoom carry free of charge baby buggies, wheel chairs etc. Complimentary headsets both journeys - £2.50 for Economy and a comfort pack of a blow-up neck pillow and a lovely warm fleece blanket in a fleece bag on the East bound flight, costing £3.00 in Economy. Dedicated check in for Premium passengers and a later check in time. And lastly the luggage is tagged as PRIORITY and comes off first!
Where does Zoom fly from and what are the destinations? ************************************************************ ****
Glasgow, Manchester, London, Cardiff, Belfast, Paris and Rome in Europe. Vancouver, Winnipeg, Toronto, Fort Lauderdale, Bermuda, Montreal, Halifax, New York, Calgary, Ottawa and San Diego. Some places only have 2 destinations but London has 11! Check the map on the website to see what is available.
What is the aim of Zoom? ****************************
They want to provide a high quality but low cost option for transatlantic flights, and guarantee to give the lowest cost. It is easy also to fly to one destination like Calgary and fly back from Vancouver, without being penalised.
You can also pre-book a Lounge to make the airport waiting more enjoyable at a cost of about £13 each, book a rental car and a hotel.
What are the meals like? ***************************
I've never had a gourmet meal on a plane yet, but it was more than adequate. Both meals had a pasta starter, rolls and butter, a chicken dish with orange and ginger rice or a beef dish, and on the return both chicken or beef with mash and vegetables. Apple pie on one journey, and blackberry and apple tart with streusel topping on the return. Biscuits and cheese and a lovely Lindt chocolate! On the west bound journey an ice cream and cookie was served too. The one snack was a coronation chicken wrap and on the return for breakfast was a hot croissant with a slice of turkey and melted cheese. Along with all the drinks it passed the time and was a tasty distraction. A hot wipe was provided after meals and thoughtfully a small wipe supplied if you took a newspaper when they came round.
Delays ********
Unfortunately when we headed to the gate around the time we were to check in at Vancouver we discovered there was a 4 hour delay. This extended to 4½ hours and a voucher for $10 was given for meals. When we did board the plane the captain apologised but there had been a mechanical problem a few days before and a replacement part had been needed. They were trying to catch up, but this was made worse in Calgary where we stopped to refuel and board more passengers when one passenger did not show and his case had to be off-loaded.
Staff *****
The staff, were very pleasant to us and helpful, one lady did complain about them, but I felt she got the treatment she deserved as she was being awkward when boarding was taking place and didn't want her bottles by her feet, it is their policy that no bottles go in the overhead lockers - a wise one in case they fall out, she certainly would have complained if it had struck her on her head. The staff were polite but insisted on the rules. Their uniform reminded me of a Railway worker, but it seemed quite practical.
Cost *****
Our flights were all added up into the whole experience, but I have checked and it costs £100 more for the upgrade to Premium. This equals the extra luggage cost plus the other advantages and extra comfort, so I think it was worthwhile on an 8hour journey and even longer return one.
£189.00 is an average cost from Glasgow to Calgary at present, not bad until you add the tax and fees of £167.00 making a total of £356. Premium would be £496.00. They are advertising special deals to New York from £299 round trip, so it is worth checking the website for offers at www.flyzoom.com
Duty free ********** As on most flights duty free is available and Zoom gifts, they take Canadian or US Dollars and British money.

Advantages: Direct Services between London Gatwick and Winnipeg Disadvantages: Don't exspect too much luxary and pack light!
...cheap airlines and "Upper" airlines. Zoom Airlines falls in the cheap airlines of which cost comes first before little comfort and luxuary things that you would exspect from the other group which usually costs more.
Zoom first of all gets a massive thumbs up for being the only airline (even though its seasonal and runs once a week) that flys DIRECT to Winnipeg airport from London, England. The amount of people that actually travel between Winnipeg ... ...these two airports and a masive shame on you Air Canada for not doing so (although offer a nice route via Toronto).
The age of the aircraft of which I flew on a Boeing 767 was in question to be even made before the turning of the 1990s due to the fact that old movie style seats, trays and even ash trays that were readly avaliable was on this aircraft. But then again it is exspected for a cheap airline to have a not so fairly new aircraft.
The baggage ...

Advantages: Cheap as long as you are not particular and have time to waste Disadvantages: Too many to mention
...people had good experiences with Zoom however my family and I and (I think I speak for the rest of the passengers on my flights) were very disappointed, upset and angry at the lack of support, organisation and quite frankly misrepresentation of the true facts relating to our flight back to Gatwick from New York. As I write this I am stranded in a low-grade hotel at JFK after 24 hours of a delay and another 5 hours to go - however I'm lucky compared ... ...safety but it seems that Zoom were willing to play fast and lose with our lives and not make sure the plane was properly repaired before attempting a flight...very worrying. Yes the planes are old, there is no choice of entertainment, no radio, poorly functioning headphones, old style (ie poor quality) food and lack of customer facing skills by the stewards (who were even complaining about the passengers in offensive language and in earshot when ...

Advantages: Food was ok, plane was tired, but functioned. Disadvantages: Customer service terrible. No luggage for 11 days! Zoom was very unhelpful.
...benefit DO NOT FLY WITH ZOOM AIRLINES.
Yes, I enjoyed the on board service, food ok, and flight was semi comfortable.
The problem was that they screwed up my baggage and I got it 11 days into my 17 day trip. I cannot even begin to describe the tears, frustrations, and anger that plagued me. Zoom dealt with it terribly. They were incompetent, I couldn't get ahold of them outside of North America (terrible for a company who flies internationally), ... ...and ask them to contact Zoom from North America. My family spent several days contacting the airline, getting promises for me that it would be delivered, etc. Zoom located the luggage in Canada 2 days later, but shipped it to the wrong airport in Paris. Finally several days later they found it, and were supposed to ship it to me, but it never happened.
Nine days into my trip, and hearing from my familiy who was in contact with them daily that "it ...

Advantages: Food was good, a little cheaper than the other airlines (but not worth the hassle) Disadvantages: Bad communication, disinterested staff, lack of customer service
...that fine until arrival. Zoom lost our baggage. At the airport their staff were disinterested and their attitudes suggested this was very common place, at least 2 other passengers from our flight were also reporting lost bags. They said they would call the next day to let us know what was happening and we heard nothing from them. At the airport I had asked them for a contact number and I was given a card, only later did I look at it and realise it ... ...After numerous calls to their main number in Canada, which leads only to an answer machine, the messages on which they never seem to respond to, I spoke to reservations and convinced them to give me another number this time in England. $60 worth of international calls later I finally spoke to someone. Our bags finally made it to New York 4 days late. For which I have been told the maximum compensation is $100 - a complete joke given that we had to ...

Advantages: Excellent staff, an economy class service at a 'no frills' price Disadvantages: Jet lag!
...-- I've no idea why Zoom is called a 'no frills' airline. I can't see the point of the Premium Economy seats: the extra legroom looked minimal, and £80 is a lot to pay for a free bottle of water and some free booze. In Economy we were given a hot meal, and later a snack; water, coffee etc. was in plentiful supply, and you could buy alcohol. Three films were shown on the way out, and two on the way back. The pilots kept us informed all the way about ... ...BA etc.), but we were given a voucher for lunch in the airport and a round of free drinks once on board. I'll certainly use Zoom again: BA etc. don't give you anything better, and you pay a lot less with Zoom for an equivalent Economy-class service. ...

Advantages: No need to take too much spending money! Disadvantages: The all inclusive can induce 'cabin fever' after a while
can be lethal so be sure to take anti histamine tables if you are prone to bites.
We went with Go Travel Direct from Glasgow - with Zoomairlines and changing in Ottawa, Canada. We had a long wait (or did it just feel like that!) in Canada to go through customs as you are actually entering their country. We had our son's sandwiches taken from us as no meat products can be brought into the country. Zoomairlines were great considering they are a 'budget airline'. We had two films to Canada and one film down from Canada to Cuba. Meals were fine and soft drinks available free on request. To go in June cost us £850 per adult and £499 per child. Considering the location I think this is good value for money. To be honest when we go back we will pay more for a 5* hotel as I think their rating system can be knocked down a point (i ...
Advantages: The hub for cheapest UK and European holiday flights like easyJet Disadvantages: Not accessible by train and a little bit far from the city centre
FLYING WITH EASYJET airline from Northern Ireland to any UK and European destinations is always through Belfast International Airport. BIA is one of the major airports in the Irish region that has recently reached a major milestone in its history by having catered to 5 million passengers for the past 12 months. Currently, it is serving 41 scheduled destinations with 26 European and transatlantic, and 15 domestic flights.
Comparing BIA with George Best Airport, it is unlikely the former is popular for European flights, aside for being easyJet's hub, it is also the home of Jet2, bmibaby, Continental airlines, Zoomairlines, Air Transat, Wizz Air, and Manx2. Moreover, most of its chartered holiday and few winter ski flights include Austria, Balearics, Bulgaria, Canada, Canada Islands, Croatia, Channel Islands, Cyprus, Greece, Italy ...
