Zurich....or Zu reich?? An Alternative View....

Advantages: Exciting City, Great Food, Close to Slopes
Disadvantages: Um....

...Ah, well… I lived in Zurich more than ten years ago, and as a student, which has obviously coloured my impressions of the place, possibly in more ways than one… For the purposes of this review, however, this means firstly that if you're looking for accounts of its most luxurious hotels, its Michelin-starred restaurants, or for gushing tales of sprees along the gilded collection of Haute Couturiers and jewellers that constitutes the celebrated Bahnhofstrasse… ...
...been back to Zurich many times since, but most of my favourite haunts are probably still those that I first encountered as a student.

ANARCHY & SWISS FRANKS: I first arrived in Zurich as a naive seventeen year old. It was 1992. Smells Like Teen Spirit had just come out, and the youth of Zurich were in the throes of a full-blown grunge epidemic. The same was pretty much true the world over, but in 1992, Zurich was Grunge Central, mainly ... more

Little BIg Town

Advantages: Easy
Disadvantages: Some times it can be good to bend the rules. That does not happen here

Zürich Little Big Town I bet the last time you heard Little Big anything you thought of Dustin Hoffman in that movie. No? Okay, its irrelevant anyway; the movie. Little Big Town is how the good burghers of Zürich, Switzerland choose to describe their city. What do you think of when you think of Zürich? Shopping, tax-dodgers and unemployed bankers, probably. Well okay, there are some, but there is more; much, much, more. Water Water all Around For ...
...kilometres long and stretches up to the town of Rapperswill, in a sort of appendix shaped curve. You can swim in the lake, you can sail on the lake, drink beer by the lake on sunny evening and grill by the lake with your friends on a portable barbeque. You can take a boat trip and dance of eat fondue (only tourists do this in summer). In the autumn you can try out fine wines on the Wineschiffe (wine boats) that dock there. Entrance is cheap and you ...

"Design" Hotel Greulich, Zurich

Advantages: Style, Rooms, Staff
Disadvantages: Not in the nicest part of town

and headed into town for brunch. It looked typical continental breakfast fair, some muesli, cereal, croissants, cheese and cooked meats. The Staff: All members of staff that we had contact with were polite, friendly and attentive. Environment: Be warned, one of the main roads to the town centre is full of "Gentlemens Clubs" and there were a few undesirable types hanging around too. This can be easily avoided by taking another route into town, or driving/taking a taxi. In any case, Switzerland is a very safe country and although it pays to be wary, you're unlikely to have any trouble. In general, Zurich is a nice, cosmopolitan city with plenty to see. Price: We paid the internet price for a normal room of 285 CHF per night (around £170 with todays exchange rate). The normal internet price for a Junior Suite is 360 ...

Review of Hotel Greulich, Zurich

Swiss Toni loves it

Advantages: punctual, multilingual, polite
Disadvantages: watch out for nuts in the food!

exit, which of course meant I could really stretch out. The seats were comfortable enough, and in leatherette. The in-flight magazine was a good read, which a lot of well-written articles. The duty-free guide was also very comprehensive. They are also about the only airline that I know of who supply complimentary cologne and camomile lotion. On a more general level, Swissair generally fly out of Zurich with assorted feeder shuttle services to Zurich. I have had no problems checking luggage in all the way through to my final destination, and neither have friends on longer haul flights. Some people have complained that the staff have an attitude problem, although I personally did not find this to be the case. There are part of the Star Alliance/Qualiflyer Group with Austrian Airlines, Lufthansa, TAP (Portugal), American Airlines, Turkish ...

Review of Swissair - SWR

Not a gnome in sight

Advantages: close to centre, clean, well signed
Disadvantages: currently undergoing building work - thus some walkways are not working.

Zurich, famous home of the gnomes is the hub from which most Swissair flights leave, and is generally most crowded just before and after business hours, with the jet-set taking off and landing here. I flew through Zurich twice in the last week, arriving first time round at 11am and then the second time round at 7pm. On both occasions I found that the airport was very clean, which was no surprise, since the Swiss are renowned for their tidiness. The airport is currently undergoing major expansion, which did mean that moving walkways were not working (they were still being finished) and so you had to go by foot between one terminal and another. This is however not too much of a hardship and the airport was very well signed, with signs in English. As a non EU state, Switzerland still has the Tax and Duty Free shopping facilities that ...
