I recently took a fortnights holiday on the Costa Del Sol with my aged and infirm mother. Normally I walk or use public transport when I holiday over there, however in view of mother's mobility problems, I needed a hire car. My original choice of hire company, despite being able to supply cars more cheaply than EasyRentacar were unable to supply one with the ease of accessibility needed by mother. So I rented a car from EasyRentacar for £170.50 for the two weeks (including the extra insurance to cover the £500 excess). All went well, we got a taxi from the airport to EasyRentacar's office, picked up a very nice little Mercedes and away we went. Two weeks later we returned it, staff certified it has having travelled just 175 Kms in the fortnight, that the petrol tank was full and that no further damage had been done to it whilst it was in our possession.
Great I thought, mindful of the stories of extra charges, they have got nothing upon which they can make supplementary charges. WRONG when I got home there was an email from the company telling me that an additional £50 had been charged to the credit card AS WE WERE ACTUALLY TAKING DELIVERY OF THE VEHICLE. The email referred me to a page on their website which, so it was claimed, would tell me what this charge was for - wrong again. The only items shown on the account information page was the charges originally agreed and previously charged for. I immediately sent off a query email, which to date remains unanswered after 10 days.
My next step will be to check with the credit card company as to whether in fact such a charge has been levied, and if such is the case put the credit card company on notice that they are jointly liable with EasyRentacar under S.75 of the Consumer Credit Act and demand an immediate refund.
Watch this space.
UPDATE; 14/02/01 Credit card statement received today with transactions up until Feb 5th (16 days after date of EasyRentacar e-mail) no supplementary charge levied yet - let's hope it stays that way.
FURTHER UPDATE: 04/05/01 The threatened £50 charge has still not been charged to the credit card, neither have I ever received the courtesy of a reply to my email to the company. This is particularly disconcerting since the ONLY way in which they will accept queries/complaints is per email.

I always wondered on Easyrentacar but I don't think I would use this service.

Very good op, worth keeping an eye on that kind of behaviour. I'm impressed you have managed to get three ops out of one holiday experience, good value for money!!

Advantages: Extremely cheap. Great, clean low mileage Mercedes A-class car. Disadvantages: You really MUST purchase a CDW. You'd be mad not to. You'll worry otherwise!
