Thankyou Flybe for opening up a route between Newquay and Edinburgh. My flight wasn't particularly cheap but the train journey would have taken at least nine hours.
Flybe uses a Bombardier Q400 stretched Dash 8 turboprop aircraft on the route. Despite the noise reduction technology (the Q apparently stands for 'Quiet'), the cabin noise levels are quite high. However, I quite like these relatively small aircraft. The leather seats (two each side of the aisle) are comfortable and the legroom good. Dash 8 and jet aircraft flight times are similar for short flights. There were good views of the Firth of Forth, including the bridges, on the approach to Edinburgh.
All the staff I encountered were friendly and helpful, except that no explanation was provided for a 25 minute delay in the return flight.

Advantages: Actually fly at sensible times from regional airports, loads of legroom Disadvantages: The use of small planes mean you feel every bump and twist; much of FlyBE's fleet are turbo-props
