I booked a rental car in Geneva for a few days, naming my girlfriend as the sole driver. On turning up at the airport, I was told that they needed a credit card imprint to cover the excess. This is standard practice, of course, and I offered them my Amex or Visa. They refused, saying that the card needed to be in the name of the named driver.
This is not something I have encountered before, and should have been spelt out on their web site before you proceed to booking. I offered to pay for insurance with no excess (in which case they agreed that no deposit would have been required). However they refused to accept payment for the insurance by my credit card or in cash.
I asked them to write a note acknowledging that they had refused to let me collect the car and specifying the reason. The note was not correct, and when I asked them to correct some details the staff became very irritable, swearing 'Putain' and threatening to call the police if I didn't like the note, saying that they had families to go home to.
Holiday Autos has refused to issue me a refund, referring to a sentence tucked away in their terms and conditions that are only sent after you have booked the car.
This was not one of my most satisfying rental car experiences.
