Megatrain.com is absolutely fantastic, I cannot sing it's praises enough!
The same concept as megabus.com, this company provide amazingly cheap transport around the UK. In this case, via train.
The main network of deals travel in and out of London connecting with different Cities.
Megatrain.com do not have their own trains, rather seats or carriages within trains that are already running. These are with companies such as Virgin and South West Trains, so the environment on board is relatively plush and comfortable.
All bookings for Megatrain are taken online, where you can select your desired travel times and dates, and are presented with all available options. It is clearly presented and easy to operate, very user friendly. You are provided with a username and password allowing you to access your account and make any neccessary changes. No tickets are issued with this system, you simply print off the confirmatory e-mail with your travel details and reference number and present this too the steward upon arrrival to the station. They also need to see this once you are on the trian, as it is, in affect, your ticket.
The general idea of Megatrain is that it is cheap, and the earlier you book your journey the cheaper it will be. Also depending on the time of the day, i.e. rush hour or off peak times, the price of the journey will fluctuate. They also have trains leaving at hourly intervals so fairly frequent and extremely convenient.
Based on a recent journey with Megatrain, I worked out how much money I had saved compared to a regular train fee on the same route.
Based on 2 Adult Fares, single, Megatrain seats cost me £9.00, £4.50 each, travelling from Portsmouth & Southsea Station to London Waterloo departing at roughly 2pm and arriving at roughly 4.40pm. Having looked up the cost of a seat on the same South West Trains train, doing the same route at roughly the same time, I would have to pay £28.00 each for an Adult seat. This would amount to £56.00!
For one off trips to major cities, this service is considerably cheaper than a regular train ticket.
Our journey was actually intended to be from Portsmouth to Oxford. National Express Coach was our only option, costing £25.00 per seat. This was too expensive, so we turned to MegaTrain and MegaBus, and our option here was to catch a train to London and then a bus to Oxford from London. This worked out at £18.00, so £9.00 each. AND we got to spend the afternoon in London. So definitely worth a look.
I most definitely recommend Megatrain to anyone looking to save on travelling costs.
