Disadvantages: Poor quality furniture and beds, construction outside

Stayed in a standard twin room in September, 2006. Didn't take any pictures of the place but they do have a website with some pictures at http://www.rainbowhotel.com.cn which has the option of English, Chinese or Japanese. The hotel is supposedly a 3-star hotel but I don't know. I have traveled quite a bit, but this was one of the worst hotel experiences I've ever had. First of all, the phone in the room didn't work when we first got to the room, so they sent up a guy to fix it. The room itself was extremely poorly lit, even with all the room lights turned on, as if they used 15 watt light bulbs only. I ended up staying here through an organised tour but i dont think we were treated any differently to independant travelrs. I think the hotel is good - four buildings on one site so it can be a little confusing getting to breakfast! - clean & comfy with all the things you need in your room, friendly staff although we did ask if they would post some cards for us (as i would in any hotel) & they were happy to do so - BUT none of the 8 cards ever made ...
...bars on site (georges (or harry, some english guy anyway) - which was very dear and a TGI fridays which did grate with me as its not typically chinese but the prices are better than georges & I prefered the atmosphere (& the super-size-me cocktails!). The location of the hotel isnt that great as there didnt seem to be much of interest near by - although i think thats how beijing is, a bit sprawly with no real centre or heart (go to xian instead!). ... Disadvantages: Rooms Very dated

As you walk into the lobby, you assume that the hotel will be very plush. My husband and I stayed for 4 nights and found the room to be very dated and we upgraded. I would not class this hotel as 4 star by European standards. Very good value for money though. The standard of English speaking staff was very good. ...adorable courtyard. The room had red walls and a very high ceiling. The attached bathroom was OK, but pretty stinky, sewerage in China is a bit hairy. You are also not allowed to flush paper down the toilet, so leaving it to fester in a bin for a day just added to the delightful fragrance. ...it as the weather wasn't too hot. One complaint was the level of noise. This morning some construction work started round the back of the hostel and I awoke to loud grinding. The walls were also very thin which could be irritating if you have neighbours who are late nighters or early risers. ...being Raffles and the other Beijing Hotel. We visited Beijing in January this year staying for six nights in the Raffles section of the hotel. You know that you are arriving somewhere nice when your taxi door is opened as soon as you get there and friendly men smile at you and welcome you to the hotel.
