A summer at Alexander Fleming Hall
Review of Alexander Fleming Hall, London by
Tracita17
Advantages: Sharing a flat and kitchen with other travelers while still having your own room
Disadvantages: A little old and worn, no air conditioning, mice in the kitchen
I stayed in Alexander Fleming Hall for a month and a half in summer 2007 while studying abroad at another university in London. Thankfully I read the other review on this website before going. His instruction to "go to the back door of the Holiday Inn" is exactly right. When standing with your back to the Holiday Inn at the back door you are looking directly at the hall across the little street in front of you. The area of Hoxton has a wild nightlife ... ...interesting people and great street art. Old Street station is close, but why not walk where you're going? It's gorgeous all the way! The City and Spitalfield Market and other cool things to see are all rather close. I kept running into Banksy art accidentally, which was really cool. Any time the sun comes out people flock in groups to Hoxton square, a block away, and open up bottles of wine and snacks together. Americans should be informed though ...

Superb London Budget Hotel
Review of Ashley Hotel, London by
sandrabarber
Advantages: Beautiful setting in a buzzing part of London
Disadvantages: Not suitable for disabled people - no lift
The Ashley Hotel is a superb, well-priced B&B hotel in a gorgeous location in central London. It is situated in Norfolk Square, Paddington, and is just 2 minutes walk from Paddington station.
Paddington itself is a buzzing district of London adjacent to the West End, and is packed full of shops, restaurants, bars etc. Norfolk Square is an oasis of tranquility amongst this. It is a square (obviously) of tall, elegant Victorian mansions, all of which ... ...the Upstairs-Downstairs tradition. The Ashley Hotel comprises 3 mansions made into one, and has 50 (I think) rooms.
The reception is well-lit and welcoming, and the two receptionists I encountered on my one night stay were very friendly and helpful. My room was up four flights of stairs and easy to find. It was a single, but had a double bed, which I always find a very nice touch. There was also room enough for me to do some yoga stretching after ...

Cheap and cheerful stay in the capital.
Review of Bayswater Inn, London by
aramintalovegrove
Advantages: quiet, cheap, clean
Disadvantages: no frills, bread and jam for breakfast!!
...of minutes walk from the Bayswater tube station, Queensway being about four minutes. These stations serve District, Circle and Queensway also serves the Central lines. The hotel is situated on a quite square with a mixture of private residence and hotels around. There was on street parking and altough there were spaces to be had I can imagine at peak times it would be hard to get a space.
Kensington palace and gardens is a three minute walk away ... ...hotel.
I found the Bayswater area really pleasant there was an abundance of amenities near by from local off-Licences to Tesco metros, Pizza hut, Mc Donalds and copius restraunts and pubs... If you couldnt find somewhere that suits your palate to eat within a 2 minute walk I would be very suprised!
***Checking in*** This was simple and quick, the entrance is by a buzzer operated door and reception is right in front of you. The reception is small ...

Looks nice on the website....
Review of The Cumberland, London by
DiaboloVF
Advantages: Soft beds, high-speed internet, friendly staff
Disadvantages: Noisy at weekends, below average housekeeping
The Cumberland is easy to find, the staff are helpful, and the rooms are clean.
However there are a couple of faults.
Upon arriving at the hotel, I was told that my room had been double booked, but they decided to grant me a free upgrade. All good except that my room was now above the hotels nightclub, and I had to put up with booming music until 3am.
That said, I did manage to have a wonderful sleep after it finished, and awoke feeling refreshed. ... ...want to get up!
The other thing I wasn't too impressed with was the bathroom. There were several cracks in the plaster, one of the lightbulbs had blown and the complimentary shampoo bottle was half empty.
My advice? At reception, ask what the noise levels are like in the room and don't accept it until you have inspected it. ...

Tropical Island Gardens
Review of Tresco Abbey Gardens, Cornwall by
helencbradshaw
Advantages: Beauty, peacefulness, diversity of plant life, reasonable entry fee
Disadvantages: None
...have visited the island of Tresco and its fantastic Abbey Garden. Tresco itself is one of the larger of the Islands that make up this wonderful archipelago, and can be reached from the island of St Mary's via boat crossing several times a day. We opted for the 1015am sailing, and this simple boat carries about 85 people on bench like seating. The crossing takes about 30 minutes, and could be a little choppy in parts, although no one seemed to have ... ...lands on the beach at Tresco in the village known as Old Grimsby on the east of the island, and the waters are extremely shallow here. The captain of our boat was quite a comedian and as a result I know I was not the only one who thought it was a wind up that he asked the people at the back of the boat to move forward, so he could propel us the final few yards and on to the beach. I recommend the 1015 crossing so that you can maximise your time on ...
