Don't count on staying, even if you book
Review of West Side Inn, New York City by travelguyuk

Advantages: The location is OK
Disadvantages: Unhelpful staff, poor customer service. No guarantee of a room even with booking

...give the impression that the West Side Inn was a good place to stay if (and only if) the only thing you were looking for was a safe place to sleep. Make no mistake about it, this was the only thing I needed and so I booked a room for myself and my partner so we could travel the 3500 miles from the UK and see the sights of New York. A not surprising amount of review space has been given to just how unorganized this hostel is. My own experience was ...
...hotels the receptionist at the West Side phoned had a free room for the nights we were staying as I can't imagine any assistance would have been offered had this not been the case. No apologies were offered and the casual way we were told we would 'just have to stay somewhere else' combined with the number of travellers who have had similar experiences suggests this is regular occurance at the West Side Inn. Avoid. ... Read review

Chelsea Star Hotel
Review of Chelsea Star Hotel, New York City by Mia85

Advantages: Fab Location, very helpful staff.
Disadvantages: Small Rooms, No Communal area.

...booked. Upon phoning the Chelsea Star they too were fully booked however, helpfully offered me a pull out bed in one of there dorm rooms for a discounted price. On arrival the staff were exceptionally helpful, offering advice with what to do for my stay and carrying my bags to my room (as someone who had been staying in hostels for the past 3 months this was rather a surprise!). The room was a crowded 10-bed doom with me on a little put up bed ...
...I found the Chelsea Star very clean, with very friendly staff in a top-notch location. However, I used the Hotel as a Hostel staying in a dorm room and there for purely sleeping had I of booked expecting a hotel I feel my experience would have been somewhat different. ... Read review

Looking for luxury? Then avoid Grand Union
Review of Grand Union Hotel, New York City by shazzaquinn

Advantages: Central Location
Disadvantages: Size and quality of rooms. Lack of friendly or helpful staff.

I travelled as part of a large group and stayed in this hotel for a one week period. On first arriving we were made to wait on the rest of the group, although we all had separate rooms. This wasn't fun after travelling for 12 hrs. The rooms are so small that I wouldn't recommend to anyone who suffers from claustrophobia or dislikes 60's type decor as I think this was the decade that the hotel was last decorated. Basic amenities such as irons and ...
...pleasure of having my toilet overflow so that the entire bathroom floor was covered with toilet water and another member of our party received free company, in the form of a mouse in her bed, and had to be moved rooms. Staff, especially those on reception, were not particularly friendly or helpful and with no internet connection in the rooms, they seriously overcharge for use of PC's in reception. $2 for every 10 minutes with additional charges ... Edison hotel was built in 1931in true Art Deco style it is situated in the heart of New York. On 228 West 47th Street just half a block from Times Square and one block from restaurant row also either direction you'll have Broadway so the situation of this hotel is perfect. when checking in i was immediately greeted by friendly staff. as usual i thought a lift would take ages and we where on the 7th floor but suprisingly the lifts came quickly. on ...
...the view as it was off a back of the street and became noisy in the morning with lorries delievering stuff. the rooms had really high ceiling with a cupboard with a tv for entertainment and lots of storage for unpackaging. the bathroom was very small , with basic sink, bath and toilet. unfortunately our lock on the bathroom was broken but staff fixed that asap. The hotel made me feel really safe with the security on 24/7. the hotel comprised of a ... Read review

Rude and impossible receptionist
Review of La Quinta Manhattan, New York City by henkwill

Advantages: Nice location
Disadvantages: Impossible reception

...past I stayed at the La Quinta hotel at the Ontario airport in California. There I had the most wonderful stay. I told a friend about it and because of that he stayed at the La Quinta in Santa Rosa New Mexico and had a very pleasant stay as well. Those experiences moved the La Quinta chain clearly up on our lists of hotel-preferences. That's also why I booked the La Quinta again in Manhattan. Accessibility. The hotel is very close to a number of ...
...before (not even in the La Quintain in Los Angeles). He even had the guts to say that he wasn't obliged to let me into the hotel if I didn't show a passport. When I had half of my suitcase unpacked (in order to search for my passport), he complained about the contents of my suitcase being displayed in public, while it was him in the first place who had demanded me to do so. To be frank, I think that this man should find another job. Housekeeping ... Read review
