    Advantages Advantages lovely riad

Disadvantages Disadvantages A nation of conmen and not safe, women are particularly vulnerable.

Please consider going elsewhere. Every single person we spoke to in the airport lounge and on the plane on the way back home said "never again". We were totally unprepared for the constant harrassment from the locals, who kept trying to convince you that you needed them as a guide, pretending roads had been closed etc. We met other tourists while there, all very fed up with being conned. on our way home we found several fellow passengers hadn't left their hotel too scared to go out and it was only for the fact our riad just served breakfast that we braved it to get our other meals. The souks ... more

    5 Stars Great holiday. 22/03/2012

Advantages Advantages Everything went very smoothly. Hotel was lovely. Rep very helpful and pleasant. Fantastic holiday.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Food could have been better, particularly if you left it late to go to dinner as buffet left out.

The holiday started well as flight from Gatwick arrived early. Fleetway shuttle transfer was on time, comfortable and pleasant. Hotel not too far from airport. The rep was very friendly and arranged to meet us the following morning. He told us about trips but wasn't pushy. Hotel was lovely with clean and pleasant rooms. We were fortunate to have a room overlooking the pool. I'm not sure that the other side would have been great but the area was not built-up so at least the view would be open whichever room you were in. Hotel was a bit out-of-town with a shuttle bus available. On the plus side ... more

2 Stars Marrakech - Watch out for this! Review with images 27/06/2011

    Advantages Advantages Beautiful buildings

    Disadvantages Disadvantages haggle, steel

We just came back from Marrakech, and I can honestly say I don't like it at all because of how people treat you. People milk you wherever they can to get in your pocket. Every second guy comes up to you to be a ''guide'' and ask you if you want to go somewhere. We learned the hard way, and even after 2 hours of walking, the ''guide'' did not know where he was going but we still had to pay him alot of money. I don't mind paying people money if they help me, but to hassle you and demand your money for nothing is another matter. What they are good at is to lure you in, then nail you. Be very ... more

Advantages Advantages Weather (if not too hot!), sights, people very friendly and welcoming

Disadvantages Disadvantages A bit too much hassle from the men

In January 2010 I took a short break in Marrakech, and wow. I've been to South Korea and Russia, but Morocco has definitely provided the greatest culture shock for me. A Muslim North African country, it is opposite Spain (there is a ferry from Spain to Tangier) and next to Tenerife. The two chief languages spoken are French and Arabic (the Moroccan form), but I found that the majority of people spoke good English. The currency is the dirham: a pound is roughly 12 dirhams with £5 being about 60. You can't get dirhams before you go, but there are plenty of currency exchange desks in the airport ... more

Advantages Advantages Warm weather and friendly locals

Disadvantages Disadvantages Poor maintenance of historical buildings. Don't ask kids for directions!!!

When my girlfriend suggested a weekend away in Morocco I had to think twice. My last trip to North Africa was to Tunisia where I felt like nothing more than a rich westerner who deserved to be conned out of every cent in his wallet. Always one for challenging my own prejudices, I decided to take the plunge. First of all, we booked a room at a Riad (a guest house, I suppose) called Riad Habiba. It is located just off of Dar El Said square on a dead end street inhabited almost exclusively by locals. Bear in mind, though, if you have never been to a developing country, the first walk down such a ... more

Marrakech has always been high up on my list of places to visit, so earlier this year I packed my bags and set off with a friend to explore the city. We flew with easyjet from London Gatwick to Marrakech Menara airport, convinently located around 15 minutes taxi ride from central Marrakech. Morrocco has a closed currency system meaning that Morrocan Dirhams cannot be brought into the country or taken out. There are Bureau de Changes located throughout the city and they accept most major currencies including pounds and euros. The two main languages are French and Arabic, although English is ... more

Advantages Advantages "Colored cottons hang in the air…"

Disadvantages Disadvantages "…Charming cobras in the square." (Crosby, Stills and Nash)

It’s your first morning in Marrakech. You’re sitting at a café in the Jemaa el Fna, soaking up the sunshine and the atmosphere while you plan your sight-seeing. I’d like to think you’d decided to start at the Jemaa el Fna by reason of having read my recent review*, but probably you would have found your way there anyway. Most visitors do. It’s well known as the central square and hub of activity in the Medina, Marrakech’s old town, and a sight worth seeing in itself. By no means the only sight worth seeing, though; Marrakech is full of them. It needs to be. These days, tourism is Marrakech’s ... more

Advantages Advantages The mix of the city and the lovely riads

Disadvantages Disadvantages The polution from petrol

My daughter and myself have recently been lucky enough to spend four days in Marrakech in October. It was to me an amazing experience. We had a very early morning flight with Easy Jet, which meant we had most of the rest of the day to spend in Marrakech. From emails that I had been exchanging with the mamagers of The Riad Zolah in whch we were staying I knew we were being met at the airport, and taken as close to the Riad as a taxi can get. We were the last people out of the airport as I had left some things on the plane, and had to wait for it be be boarded before they would go and look for ... more

Advantages Advantages Very different to anything in Europe, but very close to the UK

Disadvantages Disadvantages You have to haggle over everything

Marrakech is an interesting city, so close to Europe and yet so different in many ways. The contrast is particularly evident in the Medina, the old walled city, where motorbikes, donkeys and carts and cars jostle for right of way on the narrow dirty streets. I have just returned from a few days staying in the Medina. Getting There We flew with Atlas Blue, from London Gatwick for a mid-afternoon arrival, although Easy jet also has a flight early in the morning. Getting Around We took a taxi to our hotel from the airport and agreed, perhaps a little too easily, on a price of 150DH (£12) it ... more

Advantages Advantages Not far to travel, hot, great food, excellent shopping

Disadvantages Disadvantages No booze in the old city

I've been to Marrakech a few times now and it seems to be changing all the time. For instance, I went in March 08 and there was an open air tour bus which would never have been there in 2007! I think they've finally realised that they can tap into the tourist trade more than they currently do, so if you're thinking of going, go now rather than later and before it loses some of it's charm. I've only ever stayed in hostels which I've booked directly - good descriptions can be found in the back of the Lonely Planet guide. I normally pay about £7 per night for a room with a view and private ... more
