Advantages Advantages quick, cheaper fares, easy to use

Disadvantages Disadvantages less discount on river services

I think the oyster card is a must if you want to travel in london, whether a visitor or a resident. It lets you travel up to the daily fare, which is an advantage over a travelcard if you don't travel over this amount. Also, gives cheaper fares on buses in comparison to paying with cash. They can be used on overground trains and the dlr too. However, the travelcard offers a greater discount on riverboat services, so watch out and buy a travelcard if you intend to use this service. Otherwise I would recomment the oyster card every time. I've been using it for many years, and have quite a few as ... more

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Exagerated Prices

Working in central London is means that the Oyster card is a neccessity for myself and the many thousands of others that also rely on the underground to get to and from work. Oyster cards were launched back in 2003 and there are two main uses for it. The first is that the prices on Oyster cards are cheaper than buying the standard tickets and the second benefit is that it is a lot more convenient and I will explain more about these two benefits during this review. The oyster card is just a small credit sized card and hence can be stored with the rest of your cards. To sign up for one now you ... more

Advantages Advantages Convenience and cash savings

Disadvantages Disadvantages None, so long as you remember it's cash

If you live in London you won't need telling about the Oyster Card, you almost certainly have one. If you don't live in London, but visit on a regular basis or might be planning a holiday taking in the capital, it might not be something you've thought about. I only discovered by accident that you don't need to be a local to access the benefits of this nifty little gadget. You can buy one on-line, get it delivered and activated within a couple of days, ready to go. You should note that there are differences between the Visitor Oyster Card and Annual Cards, particularly around fraud protection ... more

Advantages Advantages cheaper than monthly Oyster pass and tops up your credit automatically

Disadvantages Disadvantages You need to kep an eye on how much money is leaving your account and how quickly

I have just recently moved to Central London after spending many years living in University Housing on campus which meant I spent very little on travel. So you can imagine the shock of having to pay alot of money for travel cards when I wasnt really going that far! So I tried several options in the Oyster travel card system and in my opinion the Oyster Auto Top up really is the best, most economical and most hassle-free way to go. I use the bus alot, mostly to and from work, but I also need to use the tube several times during the week, so I wanted to get something that didnt charge me for ... more

This was ex Mayor Ken Livingstones idea or in part at having a ticketless travel system which saw Oyster Cards introduced a few years ago. Now Sad Ken is no longer around Boris Johnson still has these in place. The main idea behind the Oyster cards I feel was to reduce queue waiting times as well as for Big Brother institutions to know where people travel to and from. The prices for travel to central London is much higher than zones 5 and 6 in Middlesex. The Oyster Card system operates throughout London and some parts outside London. I also feel that Transport for london introduced this system ... more

    Advantages Advantages Cashless and convenient

Disadvantages Disadvantages Non-identifiable to you - if you lose it with £90 credit on - you might feel abit sore

I got my Oyster card last year before going on a day trip to London, to be honest I cannot recall how I found out about the oyster card - I assume it was going on the transport for london website to find out about tube maps or all day travel cards. I do recall I bought the Oyster card off the website for £5 (£3 of which is retained for adminstration charges) and it was delivered to my home the day after - really prompt service. If you register the card online you can charge it with credit upto to £90 - you can also link it up to your account so that when credit reaches £5 it automatically tops ... more

Advantages Advantages Quick and easy to use

Disadvantages Disadvantages Don't forget to tap in and out or be charges for a whole days travel

The Oyster Card available for use on the London Underground Network and on many lines into London has changed the way I travel...I now consider myself a 'smart' traveller. Why do I say this? Well as a commuter, I used to hate having to queue for a paper ticket, that I would invariably lose, rip or misplace. The Oyster card has made my journey easier, quicker and more importantly, cheaper. Here are some examples: * A daily travel card used to cost me £15 a day on average or £210 a month. To travel into London now costs me £3.50 each way! * The oyster card has actually made me healthier. Instead ... more

    Advantages Advantages Convenient

Disadvantages Disadvantages You could lose it!

We Londoners are insistent people. We want cheap travel to anywhere in one of the biggest cities in the world. We want it regularly, without delays and seven days a week…if possible. Not too much to ask then…oh and we want a convenient travel card rather than paying with cash for each individual journey. Of course. Ladies and gentlemen, say hello to the Oyster card then. For those who don’t live in London or perhaps have never even stepped foot in the capital, the following paragraphs may read like absolute gobbledegook, but trust me, I think I know what I’m talking about and I think it makes ... more

    Advantages Advantages Easy to use.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Some cards just stop working.

Launched in 2003, the oyster card is basically an electronic card which can be used in place of paper tickets for use on public transport. Initially, I was very suspicious of the oyster card system. I had my doubts as to whether it would actually work properly and whether it would be a flash in the pan. Would transport for london really stick with this idea in the long term? Is there even any benefit of using the oyster card system? Well, as well all know, the oyster card system has been in use for a number of years now and tfl have just indicated that the system will be expanded to include ... more
