The Terracotta Army. When I was fourteen I remember watching with mouth agog at the news reports of the discovery of the terracotta warriors in Xian, China. They were accidentally discovered by a group of farmers who were drilling a well for water. They came across some unusual pieces of pottery. The authorities heard about it and a delegation was sent to examine the pieces of pottery. It was quickly identified as pottery from around the time of the first Emperor and this was quickly relayed to more senior officials. Shortly followed a massive influx of archaeologists who started to dig and ... more

Advantages Advantages One of the big sites to see

Disadvantages Disadvantages Most of them are still buried or broken

The Terracotta Warriors tend to get listed as one of China’s must-see attractions. The history behind these is that the first emperor of China wanted a magnificent tomb, so he commissioned the building of it while he was still a young man and they worked on it for over thirty years. One of the things built was a massive army of life sized warriors made out of terracotta, hence the name. About eight thousand warriors were built, each with different faces and expressions because the sculptors modelled the warriors’ faces on themselves. After the emperor’s death, however, there was an uprising ... more

Advantages Advantages interesting, worth a look

Disadvantages Disadvantages quite expensive compared to similar museums

This museus is definately worth a visit and was a lot better than I expected, when i walked into the first room where the warriors were situated i just stared in awe, it is an amazing sight and much better than I had imagined it would be. The warriors were created to protect the mausoleum of the first emperor of the Qin dynasty. The statues are life-size and they are all unique which makes it so amazing to be able to see in real life - the sheer effort and craftmanship that went into making them. The statues were late destoyed not long after they were built, many of the statues were smashed up ... more
