New Adventures in My HiFi
Review of New Adventures In Hi-Fi - R.E.M. by  ickkate

Advantages: An adventurous album
Disadvantages: Maybe a little diverse for some

...this album, I would suggest that this album sounds like a hybrid of 'Automatic for the People' (the album most people associate with these boys) and 'Monster' (an album which confused some of R.E.M.'s followers.) In Automatic there are some beautiful songs whose harmonies and lyrics leave a visual and vocal mark upon the listener; whereas in 'Monster' the action is cranked up with a more grungy sound combining lots of guitars, lots of drums and Michael's voice pushing in gruffer, harsher directions than anyone could have imagined from the band's previous offerings. So, where does that leave New Adventures In Hi-Fi? I would say that it is an album which is much more accessible to the traditional R.E.M. fan than Monster. Automatic's folksy melody is there, but Stipe's voice has an extra depth and variation, that could not have happened without... Read review

Not a lot of action, as far as I'm concerned
Review of Oral B CrossAction by  rsmith

Advantages: Indicator bristles are a good idea
Disadvantages: Nowhere near as good as it looks, and it could hurt your gums

...And I'm a bit cross too! I’d always been pleased with the Oral B toothbrushes, and I’ve been buying them since around 20 years ago, when I remember my dentist recommended them to me. It may even be longer ago that that, but I’m showing my age here! I haven’t used Oral B toothbrushes exclusively – they weren’t always even that easy to find in the shops in the earlier days. But I did prefer them, they always seemed to be that little bit softer, more comfortable to use, and there was a good range of sizes (OralB 40 was for small mouths, OralB 60 for bigger mouths – I probably don’t need to tell you which I am) So I bought an Oral B CrossAction toothbrush around 2 weeks ago, and I’m here to let you know what I think about it. This is where I think I need to introduce the ® sign... Read review

Everyone Loves A Bit Of Ring Action
Review of The Fellowship Of The Ring - J.R.R. Tolkien by  peppersinclaire

Advantages: Timeless classic
Disadvantages: None

...When you buy some books, they languish on your shelf like a 50 year old swinger on a sun bed in Spain. Some made you take the brave step into the world of fiction based on their celluloid conversions. And some you just have to own; a dictionary (made a good film, the zygote did it), Trainspotting, Just So Stories, and of course, Where’s Wally? Yet, even if you’re not a fan of Dungeons & Dragons related oomska, then The Lord Of The Rings books should be in your possession, it’s as vital as water in your ice cube tray. First published in 1954, the book underwent a small amount of controversy, like all the best forays into literature. Written over 13 years, many misunderstood large portions of the text as being allegorical to the events of the Second World War, which was raging on as J.R.R. Tolkien was nearing the close... The lowdown on the Sony J7 and J70
Review of Sony Ericsson J70 by  chinieng

Advantages: Small and light; looks good; intuitive menu system; Large memory; E-mail; not a Nokia ;-)
Disadvantages: Quiet, nasty ringtones and weak vibrate (Can't do both at the same time); Text fields too short; Rubbish games

...-- Looks The J7 and J70 are the same, save for their appearance. The J7 is a metallic blue-cum-purple, and the J70 is silver. For the rest of the review, I'll refer to the J7. Its biggest attraction is that it is a small and light phone. It's also very stylish. Forget its recordable ringtones and fancy graphical menu - this is a phone you can stuff in your pocket and forget about. The J7's size does mean that it has a smaller screen than the Nokia 3330, but it's a price worth paying for a phone that is over 30% lighter. The buttons are hard with a good action, and the numbers are printed inside them rather than on top, so there's no danger of them rubbing off. It has an internal aerial, which adds to its appeal, and the trademark jog-dial. The jog-dial lets you access the menu system; rotate it up or down to choose an option, then press... Read review

Veronica and J.D.'s Love Has A Body Count
Review of Heathers DVD by  eve6kicksass

Advantages: Classic cult black comedy, one of the all time great films of the teen genre
Disadvantages: Not for every taste, people who dont like satire won't want to see it

...’s films about teenagers (EMPIRE RECORDS, anyone?). Of course, many of those who have seen HEATHERS several times are able to point out literary references which Waters had cleverly included in his script; one example is when J.D. attempts to figure out what to do after Heather Chandler is dead; he gets the idea of suicide when he spies a copy of Cliffs Notes on the floor next to her which is on Sylvia Plath’s “The Bell Jar.” If you look closely, Waters also adds very subtle references to Agatha Christie’s “And Then There Were None,” Mark Twain’s “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” and also J.D. Salinger’s “Catcher In The Rye”; the latter novel actually played a more substantial role in Waters’ original script, though the studio wouldn’t get clearance for it, so they had to replace a large part of it with Herman Melville’s "Moby Dick... J.K Rowling through and through
Review of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire - J.K. Rowling by  arcadionseyes

Advantages: great characters, great story, original ideas, brilliant and witty writing
Disadvantages: length could be a big turn-off for younger kids, but if already enthralled by the rest of the series I doubt it!

...from motion sickness). I think it maybe took me 2 weeks to finish it, and what an amazing two weeks of reading it was. The book is long, an extremely thick volume of at least 600 pages. Very inconvinient, believe me, when you are trying to hide the fact from fellow college students that you are reading it(I ashamedly was one of those who scourned 11+'s for reading the series until recent weeks). The story is as enthralling as ever as we once again read the adventures of the young wizard, Harry Potter. For those who don't know the back story, and have being living under a rock for the past few years, the Harry Potter series is a tremendously(and rightfully so) set of books written by Glasweigen(sorry about the spelling) single mum J.K. Rowling. Harry himself is a young boy, who until recently, never realised of his un... Read review

Farmer Giles of Ham by J.R.R.Tolkien
Review of Farmer Giles of Ham: Complete & Unabridged - J.R.R. Tolkien by  debmercury

Advantages: Magical Story
Disadvantages: None

...This is a review of the book only. This book is published by HarperCollins and is 144 pages long. "Its imaginative atmosphere and magic are best captured when it is read aloud, when it will live with all the force of 'a tale that holdeth children from play and old men from the chimney corner". ~About The Author~ I don't always do an "about the author" in my reviews but I have admired and been fascinated by J.R.R.TOLKEIN's work since first reading the hobbit at ten years old. This fascination has stayed with me into adulthood and as far as I know I have all or almost all of his work. Although Tolkien is best known for The Hobbit, The Lord Of The Rings trilogy and the Silmarillion, he has also written lots of other fantastic children's books: Leaf by Niggle:Which recount's the strange adventures of the painter, Niggle... R.E.M. "Accelerate" (2008).
Review of Accelerate - R.E.M. by  jjdoody

Advantages: R.E.M.'s best album since "New Adventures in Hi-Fi".
Disadvantages: ...R.E.M. haven't had a good album since "New Adventures in Hi-Fi".

...their college rock origins. With "Accelerate", the first sense of pay-off is present, but comes muddled, and, most disturbingly, in a self-parodying vehicle that has garnered a degree of critical praise. The patch between 1996's still-underrated, but never great, "New Adventures in Hi-Fi" (incidentally lead-singer Stipe's favourite R.E.M. album), and 2008's "Accelerate", is a fraught one, perforated by the poor and drummerless "Up" (Bill Berry's aneurysm necessitating an early retirement), the awkward, summery wafts of "Reveal", before the rudderless, "Leaving New York"-led "Around the Sun" almost completely destroyed the band's modern credibility and commercial viability (especially in the U.S.). Indeed, the only saving grace of R.E.M. since 1996 has been through compilations, and the release of the fairly-strong "Bad Day" (from "In Time... Read review

But sadly it was a Ferrari one and two come Sunday afternoon with the world champ starting where he will probably finish. Rikkonnens engine went bang and Montoya’s aggressive but undisciplined approach saw him get a ragged 4pts. The brilliant young Spanish driver ‘Alonso’ made the pedestal in third although being a minute behind the winner... Read review
