...Dead ant, dead ant, dead ant, dead ant, dead ant, dead ant, dead ant..... Yeh I know it's old, but so is the person I'm gonna be talking about now, and no, he's not dead either. As you might realise, I have one or two Adam & The Ants CD's in my collection, not to mention the stash of old vinyl that has sat gathering dust for simply years now. I was a big fan of Mr Ant (now the grand age of 50 - his age not mine!), back in the 80's, and although he's been long forgotten by most, I'm still what you could call a dedicated follower. It's not likely that he'll ever tour again, release new material or make many public appearances, therefore I'll have to continue to enjoy his old stuff. Advantages: An excellant erminder of how good the Ants were, even on b-sides
Disadvantages: More punky than the hits

...During 1980 -81 Adam Ant was the no#1 pin-up, with pirate costomes and red indian make-up, and still managed to maintain a musical credibility with the double drum burandi beat accompanying all his songs. However prior to this Adam was a leather clad bondage obsessed punk and this cd collects the songs he wrote in this period which were later released as b-sides to all the hits. Those b-side babies in full are: Fall-in - an adrenalin fueled tribute to punk venue the screen on the green Making History - actually on Kings of the Wild frontier album, but apparently not released in the US - features the trademark Ant drum sound, one of the few songs in this collection to do so. Advantages: A real eye opener
Disadvantages: very sad

...In the 80's Adam Ant was devastatingly beautiful, which is why I wanted to watch this documentary. I knew he had changed into quite a portly fellow but was not prepared for what turned out to be a very sad story of his life. He suffers from manic depression, which is characterised by mania when a person is convinced they are invincible, which is followed by deep, dark depressions that can last for years. During the depressions he had made many suicide attempts and been committed several times under the Mental Health Act. He spoke about his illness very frankly and two members of the Ants also contributed. All in all this programme left me feeling rather guilty for adoring the personality in his heyday with not a single thought about the real life he was living. I don't regret watching this and would recommend it to anyone... Read review

Advantages: Every Ant hit is here, chronicling a glorious if brief reign as the greatest pop band of their time. Plus, it's at mid-price!
Disadvantages: Tracks aren't in the order they were released, which obscures the evolution of Ant's musical horizons, those over 28 might find some of it rather naff

They were a glorious mish-mash of punk leftovers, tribal rhythms, and brilliant pop hooks, led by a dazzling frontman whose visionary talents marked him out as one of the leading pioneers in pop's emerging video-centric movement. Adam Ant was quite simply the ultimate popstar. "Ridicule is nothing to scared of...", went the line in his biggest UK hit, 1981's 4-week chart-topper Prince Charming. Even the most cursory browse of the track-listing on this 1999 Greatest Hits collection reveals a complete absence of fear in the daring, stylish (and sometimes a little foolish) trappings he placed onto his uncanny knack for a memorable chorus or thunderingly infectious rhythm. ...The early 1980's started off slow for music in general. The Punk scene was becoming tired and the newest bands were just starting to make a difference, with such bands as Duran Duran, The Police and Madness just starting to emerge as being the finest sounds around...... And then a new group burst onto the scene, full of enthusiasm and rather more drums than we had ever experienced before, there was this group with a lead singer with a massive white stripe across his nose and wearing strange clothes from what looks like a soldiers uniform sometime in the 1800's! This was Adam And The Ants!! 1980 saw the release of 'Kings Of The Wild Frontier', a theatrical, excessive and cahrged with sexuallity album that made it to number one in November that year and stayed in the charts for another 12 months! ..."Don't step on an ant, he's done nothing to you,"apparently.... At least that's what Stuart Goddard thought when he donned his make up and feathers. Squiggly flashback scenario zig zags across the scene as the years roll back and we draw near to a time when young Adam Ant was a mere stripling, a failure made good, a zero who forsook the bondage and Nazi paraphernalia, who got picked up and then dumped by Malcolm McLaren before making good Talcy's brainstorm of blending big Burundi beats with gorgeous Glam Rock trappings and re-emerging as a pop rock chameleon opining "I'm the dandy highwayman", now worship me, me, MEEEEEEEE! Ah, it was a high old time, the gaudy early 80's, seconds before the arrival of those foppish New Romantics, when warrior rock was everywhere, a-whooping and a -hollering and you couldn't pick up a copy... ...Its black, its 12 inches and its quite amazing!!!!!! I am actually refering to the album produced by 'Adam and the Ants' in 1981 entitled 'PRINCE CHARMING' , the third album made by Adam and the Ants. So what did I get for my money way back in the early 80's? An amazing piece of vinyl containing only 10 tracks of what I consider to be Adam and the Ants second best album (my first favourite being Kings of the wild frontier) This album is very much Adam Ant at his most theatrical, all the make up and extravagant videos to accompany this music was pretty much unseen in the world of pop music at this time. In fact the album cover is just a picture of Adam (real name 'Stuart Goddard') posing in a very frilly jacket with huge cuffs and wearing loads of make up and his hair tied up with ribbons!!!! ...Many years ago I read in a magazine that Stuart Goddard, going through a bad patch, went to visit a psychiatrist, sat for ages in the waiting room getting more and more agitated. Looking around him at others there, he decided that it wasn't for him. He got up, walked out of the waiting room adamant never to return or get so low in his life again. That is written from memory and isn't exactly what it said but is the gist of it. He then went away and formed his music making group and used the word adamant in the name. So..... Adam Ant was born. Well, I don't know how true that is, but it struck me as a lovely story of someone who was feeling down pulling himself up and doing something with his life. ...My husband snuck this into the trolly without me noticing so you can imagine my face when it came thorugh the checkout. I was dreading having to listen to it in the car whenever we went out but thankfully it isn't as bad as I expected and there are a lot of song which I do recognise.
