Air Inida- Terrible
Review of Air India - AIC by
missgiggles22
Advantages: cheapness of price considering it was New Year
Disadvantages: most things
...I decided to fly with Air India because it was the cheapest flight we could find to go to New York at New Year and because we were on a budget the price was good at just under £200. I did have reservations about flying with them as I didn't know what they were like, I hadn't heard anything particulary bad and was reassured by a few people that have flown with them fairly regulary.
Check in/ security before flight- All was good when we went to check in, we didn't wait very long at all a both ends. Security was a nightmare at both ends (heathrow and JFK) and was in the line for quite a while, but considering the goings on lately, at least they were taking the jobs seriously. Boarding the flight was fine at heathrow and it was on time but when coming back from NY it was terrible, everyone was pushing forward to try and get...

I doubt I'll be Flying AI Again!
Review of Air India - AIC by
anonymili
Advantages: good quality and quantity of food and comfortable seats
Disadvantages: almost ALWAYS delays, overly laidback staff
...A BIT ABOUT AI (INCORPORATING IA)
Air India (AI) is the only state-owned airline of India which merged with Indian Airlines (IA) in September 2007. It connects through over 145 international and domestic destinations worldwide including internal flights in India via Air India Express and Indian Airlines. Air India previously had a very poor reputation as a rather shoddy airline with poor customer service and rather ramshackle aircrafts. They have tried to update their on board entertainment by introducing monitors in front of each seat to catch up with other long haul carriers and they cater for vegetarian or halal meals as well as meals to cater for diabetics. Air India's recent merger with Indian Airlines has meant that is now the biggest South Asian airline and they're in the process of ordering new aircraft to add to their 200...

India to take away
Review of BBC India with Sanjeev Bhaskar - Sanjeev Bhaskar by
orlando
Advantages: Easy to read, and lovely photography
Disadvantages: None at all.
...wife actress/writer Meera Syal). The 'India with Sanjeev Bhaskar' programme was compelling to watch, and so, when I had my birthday a few weeks after it aired, my daughter bought me the companion book to the series.
I have never read a travelogue before, not even the more famous Michael Palin books, so on receiving the book gratefully, I assumed I would just 'dip' in and out, and mainly look at the photographs. How wrong was I??
I have taken my time reading it, as I have enjoyed digesting all the tales from the people that Sanjeev has met as he travelled anti-clockwise from Mumbai / Bombay, down through Goa the popular tourist resort, onwards to Bangalore, the silicon valley of Asia, then round and up to Calcutta near the border with Bangladesh, and at the mouth of the Ganges. He then travelled further north, to the land of tea...

GURGAON a Village becomes heart of corporate India
Review of Gurgaon (New Delhi, India) by
rishmitra
Advantages: Scenary, Lakes, Modern and Ancient architecture, Nightlife, Entertainment, Shopping and great food.
Disadvantages: Poor local authorities and everything run by Public sector.
...INTRODUCTION
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
I was born in Calcutta but moved to Gurgaon (South of Delhi) with my parents at the age of 12 and have lived there till 1999 until I moved to London 5 years back. This review is a tribute to a place where I spent all my teenage years. Unfortunately even Lonely Planet has not covered this place in its India book, as Gurgaon has gained prominence in recent times.
Gurgaon used to be a small village north-west of India situated near the border of Delhi and very near to the state of Rajasthan. Now physically it is shared by National Capital region of Delhi but falls under the jurisdiction of state of Haryana. Gurgaon is now a city in itself booming to be the capital of corporate India.
HISTORY
^^^^^^^^^^^^^
The city (earlier village) is named after Guru Dronacharya; who was offered the village...

to fly within India
Review of Air Sahara by
traveller55
Advantages: good quality with good price
Disadvantages: -
...In 1993, in a market monopolized by Air India and Indian Airways (two airlines backed-up by New Delhi government), arrive a totally privately-owned airline: Air Sahara.
In an age of low-cost it was a surprise to see a new traditional airline, specially in a practically full market.
Today, after more than ten years, Air Sahara has strengthened its market quota offering to its customers services quite perfect.
Air Sahara flies to 22 cities within India as well as to Colombo (Sri Lanka) and Khatmandu, Nepal.
The fleet has an average age of 5 years and includes 13 Boeing 737 (300-400-700-800 series) and 7 Canadair CRJ-200.
The 737’s have two-class layout (Business, called Sahara Royal and Economy, called Sahara Special). The seat pitch is quite good (better than most of European airlines). The aircraft have small monitors, that fall...

India's historic capital with many layers..
Review of Delhi (India) by
cyrano
Advantages: Cosmopolitan, modern, rich history
Disadvantages: frenetic, unbearably hot during the summer
...structure ever built.
Delhi is a frenetic city, yet by European standards and compared to Bombay and Calcutta, it's civilised and relatively clean and quiet. It has a fascinating history that's there to be explored and has some of the best hotels and restaurants in India.
Places to Stay: New Delhi has a host of fantastic five star hotels for the business traveller, at around $200 USD per night. The Taj Man Singh, Mayura Sheraton, Imperial, Intercontinental, Hilton, Ashoka, and the Oberoi all have fantastic restaurants which cost no more than eating out in London. Just drop in for a coffee and an air-condition break during that heavy itenary of sight-seeing.
Budget Places to Stay: The Pharahganj district has endless rock bottom and dingy backpacker haunts for as little as $2 a night.
Things to See: Old Delhi's bustling markets...

Air Arabia
Review of Air Arabia by
lillygirl
Advantages: Cheap no frill airline covering the Middle East, N Africa and Sub-Continent
Disadvantages: Taxes often more expensive than the flight
...Air Arabia is one of the first 'no frills' airlines to be launched in the Middle East and currently flies to over 30 destinations in the region, including some in N Africa and the sub-Continent.
Their current hub is Sharjah, one of the 7 Emirates making up the United Arab Emirates. Known more for it's neightbour of Dubai, Sharjah is one of the smaller Emirates but easily accessible to all of the UAE.
The launch of this airline has revolutionised cheap air travel in the region and for people coming from elsewhere, it means that it's now possible to cheaply visist a number of countries without having to pay top notch fares on airlines like Emirates, Gulf Air and Etihad.
It's simple to book online and print off your reference number. Some of the destinations are flown to a couple of times a week, but other more popular routes...

Pooh meets India's Thomas the Tank Engine
Review of Kalka-Shimla Railway, India by
koshkha
Advantages: It's fun, it's cheap and you get cups of free tea
Disadvantages: It's cramped, uncomfortable and can get a bit boring
...luggage. We stood for 40 minutes watching rats the size of cats running around the tracks, fending off the pitiful scabby dirty children who live on the railway station and are some of the poorest and most abused children in India, and watching men squat at the side of the track and piss on the rails. Yes we fantasised about them being electrocuted - the peeing men, that is, not the kids or the rats.
The overnight train travels very slowly, stops just about everywhere and costs about £8 for a second class air-con sleeper bunk. Pooh, my husband and I like travelling this way but our friends weren't impressed and grumped quite a lot of the way.
The Toy Train
******************
Arriving at Kalka at around 5 am, we found the station to be a blessed relief after the grime and grimness of Old Delhi Station. The public toilets were...

Jet airways is good over Air India
Review of Jet Airways by
imwhoever
Advantages: well mannered staff, food, customer service
Disadvantages: less direct flights, small lag room
...I have travelled through Jet airways on their international as well as domestic fleets. Jet is one of best Indian airlines for domestic travel, there is no doubt about it. They have recently take over Air Sahara (sahara group airline) and rename it as jetlite. So for budget airline jetlite is good option which cover many destinations within India.
For international flights it is now cheaper than Air India. So always preferable over Air India. Staff is helpful and well mannered. If you are a frequent flier (I am blue member while my husband is silver card member) then it is whole new experience of welcoming, air port lounge service and seat selection.
We were allowed for higher baggage which was most convinient way for us to take our luggage. So after frequet flier club joining they have some extra advantages.
Food quality is average...

The adventures of the Maharajah
Review of Air India - AIC by
suyog
Advantages: food, sometimes!
Disadvantages: read review
...Welcome to the Adventures of the Maharajah!
The Onward
The maharajah smiles at you at different points. He smiles while one lady gives you your boarding card. He smiles yet again when you go through security check. He smiles yet again, (and you start getting suspicious of the over done smile) before you enter your plane, and once in the plane you realize the smile. It’s a smile of mockery of the passenger, and a taste of what is about to come on him! Read between the smile – BEWARE!!! Similar fates awaited my family when they traveled by Air-India and myself, when we came back to India!
All began well when my dad’s over enthusiastic agent messed up our KLM bookings from Kuwait to New York, and the only alternative was a ‘great bargain’ as the agent put it…flying Air-India.“saab, mufth mein India bhi chale jaooge ( for free u can...
