Tulip Inn Amsterdam West - Cheep & Cheerful
Review of Tulip Inn City West, Amsterdam by  Paula_23_uk

Advantages: Cheap, Cheerful and Clean
Disadvantages: Bit far out from centre and good 15 mins walk to tram stop down dark canal path

...If you want a cheep but cheerful hotel for a great weekend in a fabulous place then Tulip Inn Amsterdam West is for you. The Tulip Inn Amsterdam West is a 3 star hotel situated in the western area of Amsterdam (3 stars indicates that the hotel has a quality rating). There are 162 rooms, which are reasonably priced and during my stay there, the room was clean and had maid service every day. I stayed at the Tulip Inn Amsterdam West in December 2005 with 3 friends and we booked 2 twin rooms. The trip was extremely good value and was booked through Expedia at a price of £116 each including flights and 2 nights (3 days) stay at the hotel. The hotel states that it's facilities include; airport transportation (at extra cost), breakfast room (at extra cost), Wireless Internet access, Free Parking, Conference Rooms, a Restaurant and a Bar... Golden by name, but Bronze in nature
Review of Hotel Inntel Amsterdam Centre, Amsterdam by  mouette

Advantages: Very central
Disadvantages: Breakfast

...The Golden Tulip (Inntel Amsterdam) Amsterdam is a difficult place to find accommodation as it doesn’t really have enough beds for all the people who want to visit, so if you can it pays to book early. I found the Golden Tulip through www.bookings.nl and it (and its sister sites elsewhere) is a good site to use for searching hotel availability. I stayed from Wednesday till Saturday and the room cost €150 on the Friday night and €110 on the others. Breakfast cost an additional €14 and is a mix of cooked and continental. I’d say it was better to ignore the breakfast and get a better quality, cheaper bite to eat near by. The hotel, which is 4 starred (not that I can tell you what that means – as often in the UK it is rather subjective), is within walking distance from the train station (less than a mile) and is situated... Plant yourself in the Plantage!
Review of Hotel Plantage, Amsterdam by  jayandfoo

Advantages: Excellent location, low price, comfortable rooms
Disadvantages: First impression

...to stay right in the centre of Amsterdam, we needed it to be easily accessible by trams. The cancellation policy for the hotel is 2 days before arrival, which I found was pretty fair. If you were to cancel after that time, they were obliged to charge you for the first nights stay only, After typing the hotel name into Google, I was pleased to find that the hotel has its own website, www.hotelplantage.nl. Described as '3 Star quality for 2 star price', Hotel Plantage is located in the 'old' part of Amsterdam which was originally built in the 17th Century as a garden, hence Plantage. With nine rooms, they advertised the hotel being easily accessible to Central Station and the thriving Damsquare. The website provided pictures as to what the rooms look like and although not the best looking rooms in the world, it looked clean and inviting... Read review

SPACE CAKES - COFFEE SHOPS and...
Review of Amsterdam (Netherlands) by  Connoisseur_Haggler

Advantages: small, relaxed atmosphere, vibrant city life –plus peaceful canal rides, and scenic beautyspots nearby
Disadvantages: eh, dont over do it! (mineral water sold in small size is expensive in restaurants and hotels)

...’s many delights. I was fortunate to be staying with a friend working in the city so had no problems with finding hotels but accommodation is plentiful ranging from 5 Star to budget hotels and Youth hostels. Hotel prices start from as low as 90fl (~£28 a night) for a double room to more extravagent 4 or 5 star Hotels averaging at about £200 a night. The dutch currency is the Gilder and is often seen abbreviated to fl. SOME IDEAS OF WHAT TO SEE ~ Amsterdam is well known for its rather liberal attitude towards sex and drugs and no trip would be complete without a trip to the Red Light District (RLD), I will discuss that part later (so you’ll have to wait!). A canal boat ride is essential to get a quick overview of the city. A boat ride costs about £5 and lasts about 2 hours. There are 4 main canals in Amsterdam; the ‘Singel... Read review

My favourite hotel
Review of Lloyd Hotel, Amsterdam by  whotook316

Advantages: A really unique hotel with a great atmosphere and design
Disadvantages: A bit pricey and maybe a little strange for some tastes

...the area is interesting its hardly beautiful. The hotel itself operates in a strange way. It doesn't have a traditional star rating, instead the Lloyd offers a range of rooms from 1 star to 5 star. Me and my girlfriend stayed in a 4 star room (as my employer was paying) and it was as good as any 5 star hotel I have stayed in. The room was huge, it had one of the most comfortable beds I have ever slept in, and was decorated really well - sort of rustic/cool/modern all wrapped into one. It also had wireless internet access - really useful if you are working. A friend of mine stayed in a 1 star room and it was very basic, but they are clean and comfortable (but you will have to share a bathroom). He upgraded to a 2 star room after a couple of days and the improvement is really worth the small price hike. You get you own bathroom and its quite... Read review

De Groenhof review
Review of Hotel Groenhof, Amsterdam by  hackerjack

Advantages: Cheep, cheerful and adequate
Disadvantages: Only adequate, no extras

...I hate to start with a negative, however most guides list this as a *** hotel and it certainly is not that. However neither are the prices. On arrival I found the place difficult to find because of the strange building numbering system (the numbers start at one end on one side of the road, go all the way down and then come back the other side again) but that might just be me not used to local custom. On arrival at the actual otel the staff were friendly and helpful, check in was no problem at all. I was informed that the lift was still being installed, which was something of a pain as I was on the top floor, but I could see that there was geuine work going on to put one in. The room was basic but functional, again nowhere near *** quality but easily a couple of steps above your average 1 star or hostel. The fact that there was only... Read review

Good cheap central hotel
Review of Hotel Amstelzicht, Amsterdam by  Degs

Advantages: Fantastic location, cheap, great rooms, good staff
Disadvantages: map on website is incorrect, making it hard to find

...I recently spent a weekend in Amsterdam and Stayed in the two star Amstelzicht Hotel. We booked it through the web at www.booking.nl, which is a great site that is easy to navigate and gives good deatils on hotels. Booking cannot be taken on line but when I sent them an email they were very prompt in replying and I had no issue at all in reagard to booking the room. The Hotel is in a great part of town. Its right on the Amstel river and is just behind the Rembrandtplein - one of the major suqres in Amsterdam. We stayed in a "superior" room as there was no standard accomodation left. The building suffer from the same lean and quirky angles that alot of Amsterdam building suffer from, but I cannot fault the hotel in anyway at all. The room was large and overlooking the canal. To give you an idea of the size it had two 2 seater lounges... Read review

6.6 times a night
Review of Swissotel Amsterdam Ascot Hotel, Amsterdam by  sue.51

Advantages: Location, superb staff, the bed
Disadvantages: Some rooms have twin beds

....20 for a portion of chips. PRICES OK - sit down - 4 Star luxury in a major city (don't forget to ask for the King Size bed - even if you do't like your other half with that much room, it is easy to lose them) - otherwise you might get lumbered with a twin. - I shall tell you the RACK rates then what we paid. Exchange if based on 1 EURO = £0.61 (don't forget exchange rates fluctuate) * STANDARD ROOMS = 250 - 270 EUROS PER ROOM(£152.50 - £164) * LUXURY ROOMS = 295 - 315 EUROS PER ROOM * SUITES = 365 - 385 EUROS PER ROOM We found the hotel on a special offer on the aforementioned web-site at 105 Euros per room night - £64.50 (5% city tax and breakfast NOT included) I am told the Luxury rooms are at the front of the building, and because of the location can be very noisy. WOULD I STAY THERE AGAIN? Despite the cold breakfast - like a shot. I... Read review

The best coffeeshop in Amsterdam
Review of La Canna by  sally_x_uk

Advantages: Good music, games
Disadvantages: closes at 3am not 5am

...afternoon some where. The only problem with La Canna is that they only sell skunk in 2g options, so when you are only in Amsterdam for a short period of time you don’t get to sample many varieties. The staff as with most Amsterdam coffee shops are very helpful and courteous. They also have a small amount of hotel accommodation, which can be booked via there website www.lacanna.nl If you are planning on visiting Amsterdam I would most definitely recommend a stay in La Canna. La Canna Nieuwendijk 123-125 1012 ME Amsterdam Open Sun-Thur 10:00-1:00 Fri & Sat 10:00-3:00 R.K.... Read review

AMSTERDAM, THE CAPITAL OF CULTURE
Review of Amsterdam in general by  sonic1971

Advantages: culture, history, atmosphere, relaxation, shopping, canals
Disadvantages: road trafic

.... It was the greatest week of my life, not just because it was my honeymoon, but because of Amsterdam itself. We went by Ferry from Newcastle upon Tyne, which only cost us £482 (inc 4 nights stay in the hotel Eden, a 4 star hotel in the city). The crossing was plesent enough, in December. Once in Holland, it was just a short bus ride (included in the cost) to your Hotel. The Hotel was fabulous and in the centre of Amsterdam. The first thing that you should do on arrival, is pay a visit to the toursist information shop and pick up an Amsterdam Pass. This pass costs 25 guilders and includes free passes, cheap passes to a number of tourist attractions. One of the best vouchers was for a free liquor at a tasting house called the "De Drie Fleschjes". The pass covers: A travel ticket on the Trams for three days. Holland International One...
