Diagnosis Murder a La Sloan
Review of BBC1 - Diagnosis Murder by
Blobz
Advantages: Funny and compelling plot allied to the antics of amateur sleuth Dr Sloan
Disadvantages: The odd episode where the plot is far too abstract (aliens)
...Catagorically the best 'medical' drama on the planet because instead of trying to be realistic, like Casulty and Holby City, Diagnosis just plays on the main character; Dr Mark Sloan played by the legendary Dick Van Dyke. His son - Steve Sloan, is conveniently an LAPD officer, played by Barry Van Dyke, allowing the white hair and coat riden Doc Sloan to discover unsolvable homicides the LAPD are trying, perpetually unsucessfully, to solve. Doc Sloan takes time out of his job as the chief of internal medicine at Community General , to solve these murders, involving his pathologist and friend Dr Amanda Bently to do every autopsy - giving nosy Sloan more, confidential, information on a homicide. Dr Sloan, along with his prodigy Dr Jesse Travis proceed to solve otherwise unsolvable mysteries playing on Doc Sloans natural nack for solving...

Real hidden treasure
Review of Sir John Soane´s Museum (London) by
isogashi
Advantages: Interesting and friendly
Disadvantages: Not easy to find
...Sir John Sloane's Museum is a real hidden treasure in London's Lincoln's Inn Fields. Mr Sloan was an architect and avid collector who designed the Bank of England amongst other things. After his death in the 1830's his house full of mummies, Greek statues, paintings was preserved perfectly. If you want to know how an educated and inspired man lived 150 years ago, this is the perfect place. It is quite small and easy to see in a few hours. Entry is free and the staff are very helpful. Make sure not to miss the picture collection....

Nice club , brilliant restaurant
Review of Sloanes by
danielsnook
Advantages: Cheap entry . Good food .
Disadvantages: Expensive to eat and drink .
...Sloanes opened about six months ago in Taunton , Somerset , i wasn't sure about how good it would be as Dellers Wharf always seemed to get the best dj's when they visited the south west but i was surprised .
Although Sloanes doesn't get many , if any , big name dj's to play there it does get some very good local talent to play , for example a guy named Chipz plays there most Thursday nights and he is one of the best hard house djs i have heard in a long time .
Sloanes also has a restaurant situated above the club which serves very good , if slightly expensive , food , which could even rival the Castle . The restaurant is very upmarket and has been sound proofed so you cannot hear anything that is going on in the club downstairs .
The Club itself is also fairly upmarket in its layout with a lot of chrome making it all look very...

The Gloucester-A Fine Pub
Review of The Gloucester (London) by
ashford
Advantages: Good location. Good drinks. Good Food. Interesting decor.
Disadvantages: Difficult to find any
...After shopping in Knightsbridge, Sloane square or the King's Road if you want a relaxing hour or so in an excellent pub I would recommend a trip to The Gloucester, at No 187 Sloane Street in nearby Knighsbridge. What a splendid place it is.! It is very near the Harvey Nichols department store and reputedly the pub was named after the famous Glorious Gloucester regiment,who won battle honours in the Korean war. Sadly this famous infantry regiment has been amalgamated into other regiments.
Belying its name this fine pub has a decided military feel about it with numerous original oaintings and memororabilia. It is located on two floors and serves up a very wide range of British real ales as well Continental lagers,wine and spirits. There is a separate dining area if you fancy a hearty pub lunch.
The nearest underground station to this fine...

Oasis luggage by Antler
Review of Oasis Vanity Bag by Antler by
e_l_parker
Advantages: Stylish, good range of features
Disadvantages: No 'piggy-back' connection
...I recently purchased a vanity bag from Oasis (fashion shop) and have found it really strong, stylish and useful, with excellent organiser capabilities.
The bag is part of the Oasis luggage collection designed by Antler. At £30 the bag seems about average price, but was definitely the most stylish and had the most features. It fits in with the ethos of Oasis as being individual and fashionable. It is black and curved at the front, and is soft-sided but with a reinforced front.
It is travel-bag sized, with two main sections. Each section includes organiser features, including:
* mobile phone pocket
* 3 bottle straps (for storing shampoo, etc)
* key holder
* A4 sized inside pocket
* pen holders
* other storage pockets
It also comes with a shoulder strap and a padlock.
For me the bag is excellent, as it forces me to become more...

Jazz and art in New York
Review of In a True Light - John Harvey by
sunmeilan
Advantages: Well-written and researched
Disadvantages: Plot quite slow
...to doing so. Harvey has a degree in American studies, which undoubtedly helped him when writing this book.
The plot
Sloane (we never find out his surname) is released from jail after a sentence for art forgery. He arrives home to find a letter from a woman, Jane, with whom he had an affair in New York in his late teens. She is dying and wants to see Sloane for one last time. Sloane visits her in Italy, where she tells him shortly before breathing her last that they have a daughter, Connie, together and that she now lives in New York having fallen out with her mother some years earlier. Sloane decides to go to New York to track her down.
Connie is a singer, living with Delaney, a dodgy ex-lawyer. It seems that Connie is in danger - Delaney has killed at least once before. Sloane is concerned, particularly when he finds out that two New York...

Elegant Shopping
Review of Kings Road (London) by
ashford
Advantages: Good mix. Less crowded than Oxford St.
Disadvantages: Few department stores other than Peter Jones
...Chelsea is not only one of london's most desirable residential areas for the rich and famous but it is also a good district for shopping. In many ways I prefer shopping in Sloane Square and the King's Road than in ever crowded Oxford Street.
Pride of place has to go to that elegant,attractive,department store,Peter Jones,which I rate highly for the quality is good but the prices are not astronomical. they also have a good cafeteria and I always seem to opt for the jacket potato with cheddar cheese-mind you it is good. In Sloane Square there is a branch of WH Smiths and I ofen find myself stocking up with books and magazines from that branch.
Go along the King;s Road and you will find plenty of shopping opportunities.There are boutiques,places where you can buy vintage American jeans, a branch of Safeway's and the Bluebird Food Hall...

brillant show
Review of BBC1 - Diagnosis Murder by
jess1980
Advantages: brillant show with good characters
Disadvantages: None for me
...I first started to watch Diagnosis Murder only this year and I have become addicted to it. Dick Van Dyke who also plays in the show wrote diagnosis Murder. Dick plays a doctor called Dr Mark Sloan. When Dick wrote this show he also cast his real son in it that just happens to play his son in the show. Paul Van Dyke plays a police officer in homicide called Steve Sloan. Another person in the show is Victoria Rowell who plays a doctor along side Mark Sloan called Amanda, a pathologist. Other characters in the show Jessie Travis.
Diagnosis Murder is based round a hospital and Mark although he is a doctor he also works for the police. But unlike Amanda and Jessie who unofficially works for the police always helps Mark and Steve out on every case. Jessie always seems to get himself in a mess with whatever Mark sends him out to do. Amanda...

Some jokes for the girls!
Review of Jokes by
missie123
Advantages: -
Disadvantages: -
...According to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, while both male and female reindeer grow antlers in the summer each year, male reindeer drop their antlers at the beginning of winter, usually late November to mid-December. Female reindeer retain their antlers till after they give birth in the spring.
Therefore, according to every historical rendition depicting Santa's reindeer, every single one of them - from Rudolph to Blitzen - had to be a girl. We should've known. Only women, while pregnant, would be able to drag a fat man in a red velvet suit all around the world in one night and not get lost.
***********************************************
A woman was out golfing one day when she hit her ball into the woods. She went into the woods to look for it and found a frog in a trap.
The frog said to her, "If you release me from...

The Original DVD!!!
Review of BBC1 - Diagnosis Murder by
SuperBrum
Advantages: That grin of Dick's!!
Disadvantages: Sometimes silly plotlines
...for this particular day. Alas, it appears to be missing for the entire week so I may now not bother to surface from bed until much later, well 5.35 at the latest anyway.
Now, why do I feel this strongly about what most people see as Dick Van Dyke's very own version of Quincy? Especially seen as most people just remember Dick as the bloke who has the worst cockney accent of all time in Mary Poppins.
First, let me tell you the basic formula for the show. Dick Van Dyke stars as Dr Mark Sloan, Chief of Internal Medicine at Community General Hospital, Los Angeles, which is the main difference. Quincy was a pathologist, Sloan isn't. At the same time as being possibly the best doctor in existence, he also helps out his son, Detective Steve Sloan (played by Dick's son, Barry) of the LAPD Homocide unit as well, in what seems like every homocide investigation...
