A beginners guide to Aquariums
Review of Member Advice on Setting Up An Aquarium by
ccundall
Advantages: Relaxing, addictive, great to watch
Disadvantages: Can be expensive and frustrating if not done properly
...to spend too long on maintaining my tropical tank and it still draws attention when people walk into the room so perhaps a tropical tank can look as good as a marine.
**Tips for a successful tropical aquarium**
Buy the best filter unit you can and back this up with frequent water changes.
Read up carefully on any fish you want and decide whether or not they can really adapt to your tank, if in doubt try an internet fish forum for advice.
Start off slowly and build up your fish population over time. You can't just add 10 fish to your tank and hope for the best, you need to add 1 or 2 and then use the test kits over the next week to check on the chemical levels in the water. Also try reading up on fishless cycles, these are available online on most fish forums and explain how to prepare the water for your first fish before they arrive...

MARINA Mermaid aquarium kit.
Review of Marina Mermaid Aquarium Kit by
DonnaShelly
Advantages: ..............An ideal starter aquarium..............
Disadvantages: ............Girly pink and only 17 Litres........
.../ aquarium care guide.
~ 2 year warranty.
This is essentially a cold-water aquarium suitable for up to three goldfish, but it suggests a 25W heater could be added for a tropical fish if chosen and my research suggests that as goldfish are quite a large fish and produce much waste another option is some ''tropical fish'' which are hardy and adaptable in unheated tanks such as minnows - - obviously get knowledge and advice from your local pet shop!
It comes with a care guide which takes you from the initial setting up to troubleshooting tank and fish problems.
Wash the equipment and add to tank, fill with room temperature water (i used filtered tap water), add a cap-full of both treatments. Rinse the filter and foam and add to tank, the filter has a low and high setting and come with a 'venturi valve' which you push...

eheim 2228 a storming filter
Review of Professional 2228 Max Aquarium 132gall by
colin_bradbury
Advantages: very quite , low power consumption , includes filter material , water shut off valves
Disadvantages: none
...another storming filter from the eheim line-up , comes with every thing to get you stated ,large bio area for beneficial bacteria .
This is one of the quietest filters I have used to date , as normal from eheim cleaning is a breeze ,it comes ready with stop taps to save you spilling any water on your floor and enough paperwork to fit most aquariums , the filter is rated to 600l and has a flow rate 1050l per hour ,unlike some filters I have tested is this filter does produce somewhere near its quoted flow rate even after the media is added ,
the media on this model is included in the package which makes a welcome change , also welcome is the low power consumption of only 25w and the three year wty ,allough you will probably never need this as the filter feels very well built , I have mine running on my 3ft cube aquarium and find...

Aquarium plants is a must for those fish lovers
Review of Member Advice on Setting Up An Aquarium by
Versatile
Advantages: Keeps fish healthy - food supply
Disadvantages: may need the odd trim - especially when plants start to over grow.
...After scanning most of the topics on offer i`ve decided to write about aquarium plant life as my first opinion.I own a huge fish tank full of tropical fish and all the added extras that you need. I`m going to talk about the importance of aquarium plants - When i started with tropical fish nobody pointed out how important aquarium plants can be when setting up an aquarium and so i`ve decided to talk about this area in particular.
AQUARIUM PLANTS:
Aquarium plants are availabe in many forms and contrasting shades. They look nice, they keep your aquarium healthy and fish thrive in a more natural habitat. They provide refuge, shade, food and even spawning sites for certain fishes.
The choice of the plants is almost as wide as that of the fishes.Plants can be selected to occupy different areas of the tank, from floating plants on the water...

NY Aquarium & surrounding neighborhood
Review of New York Aquarium, New York by
Finno
Advantages: A great holiday. visit
Disadvantages: Safety..Keep BOTH eyes open & children near
...Sometimes people don't like to travel alone, and I say to this, you just need to find something in each town or city, that you love and you will never feel alone because you will be with like-minded people and you will be in an environment that you love.
This is the case with the New York Aquarium..
For anyone who loves fish, animals, birds or other species..you will feel quite at home here in the NY Aquarium [which I will now call the NYA to make this shorter].
At the NYA , you will see that they have so many species of fish, including the 'electric eel''--indoors which gives an 'electricity' show every so often so many times a day. There are penguins in a very natural setting--they have their rocks, and their pool of water. A word to the wise, sometimes this exhibit has been known to be a bit fishy...

Florida Aquarium, Tampa Bay
Review of Florida Aquarium, Tampa by
angelak
Advantages: Great location with lots of optional extras
Disadvantages: Can feel cramped and seemed expensive
...The aquarium was recommended to me by friends who own a motel on St Pete's Beach. They are always looking for places to suggest to their guests so we offered to go and try it out and report back to them.
I'm glad to say that we had a great time...
The aqaurium is located on Channelside Drive, Downtown Tampa and is open from 9.30 - 5pm every day. It was really easy to find and parking was no problem, there was the added bonus of it being located near the check in areas for the cruise ships so there were plenty of shops and restaurants around too. You can park at the aquarium, but that will cost you $5.
The ticket prices were high, although I suspect that you could find coupons in the various tourist brochures. A general admission for an adult costs $17.95, children under 12, $12.95. An "eco-tour" ticket is available...

A great thing to do in your spare time
Review of Member Advice on Setting Up An Aquarium by
Sarah_Louise
Advantages: Great pets (cheap to keep after the initial expense, don't smell, can be left for a few days with feeding block when you go away...see op for the rest!)
Disadvantages: Expensive to set up
...why their best cabinet has bent in the centre after they purchased thier 4' x 2' x 2' glass aquarium!
~ Hood for the tank ~
This should be on your "got to buy" list. It may not seem essential, however I suppose you'll never have had fish leaping out of the tank at feeding time before?! They DO do that!!
Also you should think about the amount of evaporation that will occur, particularly with tropical or marine varieties - where the water is heated anyway.
So you've now got the tank, the stand if you need it, and the books/manuals....now for the even more fun bit!!
~ Filtration ~
You have a few options here:
~Chemical~
The media that is in the filter removes dissolved waste materials that are found in the tank, e.g. fish waste, old food.
The most common form of Chemical filtration is the use of activated...

Down Under to Sydney Aquarium
Review of Sydney Aquarium by
Tink27
Advantages: There is so much to see and do! All round Fun!
Disadvantages: Can get very busy
...Sydney Aquarium is one of the MUST sees in Sydney. Whether a fun family day out, touring solo or with friends, Sydney Aquarium has SO much to offer. I loved it and I'm pretty sure you would too.
There are games and quizzes for the kids to do as you explore the aquarium, which is both fun and educational at the same time. There are live talks and demos given by the staff about the many different species etc. You are able to see many species of fish that are endangered.
But what I found fun was feeding the Sting Rays. Some are big and some are small, but they are ALL friendly. They even let you touch them and play around. There's also the open pool part where you can holf and touch certain creatures. For example, I got to hold a star fish, which was quite interesting.
However, the BEST part (well for me anyway) is nearer the end...

Nature’s Own Windows with Tropical fish Aquarium
Review of Sachs Marine Aquarium Screensaver by
Fr0z3nM1nD
Advantages: Indescribable Realism
Disadvantages: ---
...I’ve just used this product for about a week, and I think I’d like to share or recommend it to all of CIAO member. Especially for those who like fish… =)
(I can’t imagine what you’ll say for your first word after you experienced with it)
Personal Experience
=
What an amazing screensaver when the first time I saw it. Imagine a virtual tropical fish swim across your screen like an Aquarium itself. You’ll just won’t believe your eyes for what you have seen because they look so real and lively. I just can’t help myself from starring it for several hours and several times everyday. (LOL)
It’s just like an aspirin for me to relieve stress after office hour. I even displayed it the whole night when I went to bed. It looks better when you switch off all the light and watched it with the bubble sound enabled smoothly...
