Advantages: Great characters, superb storytelling, excellent moments of adventure

...When I was growing up as a kid, there were two things that would always hold a special place in my life one was The Poseidon Adventure a 1977 big budget movie which hooked me on to Hollywood and the other was the book Around the World in 80 Days which kick started my addiction to novels. As a kid, I was already into books, but most of my reading was limited to Tintin, Asterix and Amar Chitra Katha comics, and most of my book reading was limited to fairy tales and folk lore stuff. I had an excerpt from Around the World in 80 Days, in my class V English primer, and the premise of a man going around the world just excited me no end. And I wanted to get hold of the full novel. And finally I managed to get hold of the book, and once I started it, it was hard for me to put it down. This book also motivated me to read... Read review

Around the World in 80 Gardens

Advantages: Stunning gardens, lovingly presented by Monty Don
Disadvantages: Not much information on specific plants

...Around the World in 80 Gardens is a gardening programme with a difference, because it's looking at the contribution of gardens to cultures around the world rather than explaining how to grow your own garden or the basics of garden design. There are 10 episodes in the series, and as I am writing this only one has aired. In the first episode presenter Monty Don (who is also the main presenter on Gardeners World) visits gardens in Mexico and Cuba. Details of first episode The first 'garden' visited is the Floating Gardens at Xochimilco, near Mexico City. These gardens were built by the Aztecs, to provide food for their capital city, and have been in constant cultivation ever since (although the area cultivated has decreased considerably).
