...My lovely husband booked a short stay in New York for my “surprise” 30th birthday. This was in 2002 and we went there at the beginning of October of that year. Just as a side note before I start the review of the hotel, the weather was fantastic and for much of the time we went out regularly in T-shirts. Anyway we stayed at The Bentley Hotel for the whole of our stay and overall we were impressed and enjoyed our time there. **ABOUT THE HOTEL** The Bentley is a 3 star hotel which was built in 1904 and last renovated in 2002, however I have a feeling some renovation may be going on now as the roof top restaurant has been closed until further notice. ...I stayed here with my girlfriend, her sister and their parents for New Year 02/03. I did loads of online research to try and get us a decent deal (everywhere is really pricey during Chrismtas & New Year) and eventually plumped for the Bentley as it was well situated and looked pretty cool on its website - the attraction of its 'roof-top restaurant' was a clincher. Also, the majority of reviews that I read seemed to give it a thumbs-up. My girlfriends' sister actually lives in upstate NY so had the opportunity to go in person to the hotel a couple of days before we arrived to make two requests: 1. That both our rooms had a river-view. 2. That we could have a table in the restaurant on New Year's Eve. No problem on either count, she was assured (you can see what's coming, can't you?.....) ...Biography for Beginners in 1905. The opening of Biography for Beginners sets the tone: The art of Biography Is different from Geography. Geography is about maps, But Biography is about chaps. Sorry, ladies, but those were chauvinistic times. I sure Bentley would have phrased it less gender-specifically these days. The volume includes such classics as: What I like about Clive Is that he is no longer alive. There is a great deal to be said For being dead. And: Sir Christopher Wren Said: "I'm going to dine with some men; If anyone calls Say I'm designing St Pauls." This is the introduction that Torr gives us to the art of Clerihew, I must admit being a little unsure if he was pulling our legs but I liked the idea and his own contribution. ...The Design Museum is situated just a few hundred yards from Tower Bridge. I last visited about a year ago so there may have been a few changes since then. The Design museum is a repository for what are considered to be the best , or at least iconic pieces, of twentieth century product design. This includes furniture, tables, chairs, lighting and all manner of interior furnishings. The collection though mostly covering the modernist period does look incredibly dated. Modernism as a style has been around for over a hundred years now, and is fast sliding into a historical period, in fact it already has. When you go to the museum thinking Im going to see the best collection of modern industrially produced furnishings in the country you quickly realise that when you see them all together they are all now museum pieces. ...I have been subscribing to Design Week for about 6 months now. At the time I paid £150 for two years subscription. To buy single issues you should expect to pay £2.60. As indicated in the title, the magazine is issued weekly, and contains all the news and updates anyone working in (or interested in) the design world needs to know. CONTENTS, NEWS, EDITORS COMMENT The layout follows the same format every week. Upon opening the magazine you are brought to the contents page which also contains news on design agencies that have been awarded new contracts with well-known companies. These news articles follow on to the next couple of pages and these pages also feature a comment by Design Weeks editor. Advantages: Brilliant extras and comfy drive

...Vauxhall Corsas are extremely popular cars. Their sales are only beaten by the Ford Focus. The car we have is an 8 month old Vauxhall Corsa Design. It has a 35 plate but was sold originally in February 2004. It was used by BSM driving school and has 10,000 miles on the clock. We bought it from Skurrays in Swindon. Corsas are currently a good buy. Because driving schools thought them good cars to use to teach their students. However, after the dual controls were fitted they quickly realised the clutch begins to stick occasionally. So most driving schools were quick to sell their Corsas on. This problem doesn’t occur once the dual controls are removed. So there’s lots of 2nd hand Corsas that aren’t that old. You can use the fact that they’ll have worn brakes, high mileage and the “why would they sell it if it’s only 8 months old... Read review

Disadvantages: An early term start

...A year and a half ago I was belwildered about making one of the biggest decisions in my life. I was completing my Art and Design A-Level at Greenhead College in Huddersfield. This college has a wonderful Art A-Level, and is well known for being one of the best in the country. Because the students are of a high quality, the tutors encourage applications to Universities through UCAS, instead of, or in addition to applications to foundation courses. I applied to both, and got accepted at 4 universities, and also was offered a place at Leeds College of Art and Design to do the foundation course. I was literally torn between both options. I had managed to whittle it down to a chioce between 1 particular university and the foundation, but the advantages and disadvantages of both seemed to be equal. As you may have gather
