Lurchers - a 'type', not a 'breed' apart
Review of Mixed Breed/ Non-Pedigree by
happydadtoo
Advantages: Loyal, affectionate, safe with children, low food costs, long walks essential
Disadvantages: Vet bills from chasing things can be expensive! Otherwise none whatsoever.
...Dogs are wolves first 'tamed' by Man somewhere around 12,000 years ago. As the recent Martin Clumes series 'One Man and his Dogs' (Ch4) has shown, there is still a great deal of the wolf left in our modern dogs.
Anyone who has too much time on their hands and has watched 'The Dog Whisperer' can attest the truth of that - you MUST be the pack-leader!
Now, 12,000 years represents (roughly) 5-6,000 dog generations and for the vast majority of that time - well over 95%, or until 150 years ago - dogs were 'designed for purpose' and the key element of that purpose was that they had to work for their living. Every single member of every single species on this planet struggles throughout its entire life to survive, grow and reproduce (except Man). The result is that only the fittest (and luckiest) survive. As long as Man was breeding...

Memories of Bert & A Breed Apart
Review of Bull Terrier by
rootle2
Advantages: Loyal, Loving, Unique Good Looks
Disadvantages: After one no other breed will do
...-to-be was really apprehensive. Especially as my Mum was full of advice like "don't stare at him". What else would you look at with several stone of muscle and that many teeth in the room?
However, Bert adored her and now she tells everyone there is only one breed worth having - English Bull Terrier.
What's so special?
Whatever your doing, he wants do it too. Bert would stand there with a screwdriver in his mouth whenever workmen were working in the house.
When it's raining, he doesn't want to go out. How many other breeds are that smart?
Bullys think they are human, Bert would sit on the sofa resting one foreleg on the arm. If he managed to wangle his way into your bed he would sleep with his head on the pillow (I do not encourage anyone to have a dog in their bed but my Mum would spoil him).
The breed
They come in three colour schemes...

Cholderton Rare Breeds Farm
Review of Cholderton Rare Breeds Farm by
dribsndrabs
Advantages: A lovely atmosphere, beautiful countryside and a wonderful array of rare breeds
Disadvantages: I wish it could be bigger
...I absolutely love this place....Twice winner of the Wiltshire Family Attraction of the Year Award, Cholderton Rare Breeds farm is a picturesque park showing off Britain's farm animal heritage. It's hidden away in the Wiltshire countryside and I'm sure many people don't know it's there...
The heart of this farm is Rabbit World, showing over 50 varieties from giant to dwarf - the largest collection of breeds of farm animals in the area - housed within a huge barn...at the end of which there is the opportunity for you and the children to sit with and stroke some of the younger rabbits. At certain times of the year, there will be babies that can be seen nestling with their mums. Some of the animals including sheep, chickens, and rabbits are even up for sale which is more of a pre-warning as the children will definately want to take...

rabbit breeding
Review of Member Advice on Rabbit Breeding by
mikiboy
Advantages: cute animals
Disadvantages: how do you dispose of them when they are unwanted
...Every rabbit owner from time to time thinks "wouldn't breeding my rabbit be a great idea"
Why you ask, well its simple. There are four main reasons why people wish to breed there pet rabbit.
1) to sell the young as pets
2) to sell to butchers and other food outlets
3) to sell to labs for experiments
4) for their own enjoyment and pets for themselves.
Now before you go ahead and do it and the pound signs start flashing before your eyes, think very carefully about it. I had the money making idea not so long ago. I thought it would be great to breed them to sell as pets until something i saw changed my view on it entirly.
1) Recently I found a nearby rabbit rescue centre and thought I could visit them and get myself a female rabbit to go along with my two males that I already have. When I got there I couldn't beleive my...

Alien Breed
Review of Alien Breed (PC) by
recieve3am
Advantages: Playable and addictive
Disadvantages: Can you spell H A R D
...Alien Breed was designed by Rico Holmes and programmed by Andreas Tadick. It
was very much based on the arcade machine, Gauntlet, except with Aliens and graphics based on the film "Alien". You had to perform a series of tasks, whilst building up your weaponary in order to keep the Aliens at bay. Almost a 2d DOOM.
Rico Holmes did a great job with the graphics using the Amiga's colour
palette to maximum effect. I wrote the music and sound effects and learnt a lot in the process. The Alien death sound effects were actually sampled newly born kittens, mutated on my sampler with an explosion added!
I had great fun playing Alien Breed, and even more fun when Alien Breed'92 was released. This was the same game engine but with greatly improved levels and missions. Later on, Alien Breed 2 and Tower Assault were launched, both of which...

breeding lop rabbits
Review of Member Advice on Rabbit Breeding by
preciousliney
Advantages: its nice to see them born and watch them grow
Disadvantages: it is sometimes hard to sell them
...The first thing I do before breeding my rabbits is to choose a compatible buck and doe.
Then I introduce the doe in to the ducks hutch . If all goes wall they will get on with mating right away but sometimes they will fight. If this happens then I would put them both back in there own hutch after two days I will repeat the process again if they still don’t get along then I would try to use a different buck or doe. Once I get two rabbits that successfully mate I will leave them together for a week of two.
After this period of time I will then tack the buck out of the hutch. The reason I would tack the buck out is because you want the doe to fell safe other wise this may lead to more complications such as the rejection of all the baby rabbitsI breed lop rabbits because it is an absolute joy to watch them grow.

When I have...

Mixed Breed Cats are REAL cats
Review of Mixed Breed/ Non Pedigree by
Pomplemous
Advantages: Varied, Characteristic, Odd
Disadvantages: Snooty, Grumpy
...You can pretty much divide cats into two categories - those kinds of cats that appear in tv commercials, wear pretty collars and have their names on the side of their food dishes, and REAL cats.
You can tell a real cat because s/he will usually be black and white, of no discernable breed. You'll know his history no better than he himself, and he will probably have tatty ears from many fights. He will never wear a collar and will quite happily eat off the floor or off the old saucer with the crusted remains of last week's dinners. He will never come when he is called and is not likely to rub noses with you. He will do just as he pleases as and when he is good and ready.
These are the cats that are the most rewarding to own because their mixed nature and wild tendancies mean that any show of love, you know has come because he...

PortoNovo Apartments - Puerto Rico
Review of Portonovo Apartments, Grand Canary by
sarahl2002
Advantages: Perfect Location, inexpensive
Disadvantages: ??????
...Searching through pages and pages of websites for a nice, inexpensive place to stay was getting very draining until one place caught my eye. The Portonovo apartments in Puerto Rico.
Four friends and I stayed at these apartments for a week in May this year and had a fantastic time.
We got one bedroom apartments with two people sharing one and three in another.
Two bedroom apartments are also available.
The hotel offers a courtesy room for your bags, a currency exchange and a telephone.
In the apartments were a twin room and a sofa bed in the lounge area.
The bedroom was a good size with a large wardrobe, dressing table with mirror (which we were all fighting over), and bedside cabinets with lamps. There was a large window which was good for lighting and ventilation and a safety deposit box in the wardrobe.
The bathrooms...

In a Breed of their own
Review of Choosing A Breed Of Dog - Staffordshire Bull Terriers by
MurkyDismal
Advantages: Cute, Friendly, and my favourites!
Disadvantages: None, They're perfect!
...was a stunning looking dog, brindle colouring, with a thin white crest on his chest. He was extremely handsome and very proud. He was the friendliest dog you could meet, full of life and you could do anything with him, and he didn't mind one bit.
After almost a year of having Trevor, we decided it was time to expand our little family. Time for another trip to the kennels. We set our eyes on another Staffordshire Bull Terrier cross, this time it was a bitch, and we named her Tigger. She was brindle like Trevor, but she had a slightly redder tinge to her coat. When the two dogs where together it was hard to tell them apart. Tigger had obviously had some sort of training before we got her, as she was much more better behaved than Trevor was. She still has her moments though!
The pair of dogs got on great, jumping, playing, running, and attacking...
