Advantages: a city with a small town feeling

...Last year the question plagued me: one week of autumn holidays, what could I do? When I read that one of the greatest van Gogh exhibitions ever had just been opened in Bremen in the north of Germany I found my destination. The exhibition alone didn’t lure me, though, a train journey of seven hours and an expensive ticket, to say nothing of the price for the hotel, would be a bit exaggerated, even for an art buff like me. I wanted to see the north of Germany again; I had lived in a small town near Bremen for nine years and liked it there, in fact landscape-wise I’ve never liked it better anywhere else. ...Bremen is a town of contrasts. I was there a few years ago on a training course with work for two weeks. On the outskirts there is a heavily industrialized area that is not particularly attractive. However the centre and especially the old town is full of character. My husband joined me for a weekend while I was in Bremen and we had a wonderful time just walking around the town and we also travelled to Bremerhaven by train where there is a large maritime museum. The old sector of Bremen can be deceiving - some of it is not as old as you might think. A lot of Bremen was destroyed in the war and some of the old town has been reconstructed since. This has been done so well that it was not something that I was aware of until I returned to the UK and was reading a travel guide on the town! Bremen is full of restaurants with a whole range... Advantages: gorgeous and lively

...I visited Bremen on a German Exchange with the school. As we drove into the city we were all astouded by the sheer size of the place. My pen pal was right "es ist eine sehr grosse stadt!!" With its picturesque appearance Bremen is truly a lovely city. The town centre boasts a huge station with the best trains i have ever travelled on. Their seats are so comfy and the trains are scarily quiet! The tram systems are superb and they come so regularly it is amazing how quick you can get somewhere. They run in almost every bit of the city; along with the infinite amount of buses, so getting from A to B could not be easier! They have so many restaurants and places to drink we lost count, everywhere you look there is somewhere to stop. It was fantastic after alot of shopping!! The shopping was great! In this edition of the series we are introduced to nine main characters - The Warlock Lord, Bremen, Kinson Ravenlock, Mareth, Allanon, Tay Trefenwyd, Risca, Preia and Jerle Shannara, the man behind the legend of the Sword Of Shannara book. We are introduced to the novel with the meeting of Bremen, a Druid, and Kinson, a lone borderman. It quickly becomes apparent that there is a major struggle between good and evil looming. The Warlock Lord is the face of evil, with Bremen and friends making up the face of good. We follow Bremen and Kinson around the four lands on a quest to warn others of the danger and to attempt to get some important people on side to help in the struggle. ...and disagreeable situations one has to endure. Fortunately I´ve got ´a thick skin´ as the Germans say. U - Underground I suffer from claustrophobia, when I´m in London and use the tube I can only do so by hypnotising myself. If I really reflected what I was doing, I´d never get in, I wouldn´t even go down at all! Those escalators! Three years ago when I was in London with a group of students there was a heat wave, every day more than 30°, don´t ask me what it was like to travel in the tube. Mind the gap! V - Vinegar Only Balsamic Vinegar from Modena, Italy, together with olive oil ! W - Weser Can one love a river? I did when I lived on the banks of the Lower Weser, the stretch between Bremen and Bremerhaven where it flows into the North Sea.
