Reviews of cairn terriers
a lovable rogue
Review of Cairn Terrier by
jodgem
Advantages: full of fun, very lovable, good with children.
Disadvantages: strong willed.very inquisitive,be prepared to lose for a while on a walk
...I adore cairns,I must do I have had four. When I lost the first two,I thought I could never have another dog,but once you have had a cairn you are well and truly hooked.I missed the fun becuse cairns are loyal fun loving, friendly rogues.A walk with a cairn is definitely an experience.Be prepared to lose your dog for a while because if it sees something interesting it will be off like a shot,no matter how well trained it suddenly becomes deaf until it suddenly remembers you and comes back to see if you want to join in the fun.A cairn can play all day in the fields,or its equally happy playing the lap dog with just an occasional walk. They do like human company and do not like being left alone for long.My four have all loved children treating them as an endless supplier of ball throwing chasing playtime mates. To sum up, a cairn is a lifelong...

Holly My Cairn Terrier You would love Her
Review of Member Advice on Keeping Dogs by
art1954
Advantages: Great wee friend
Disadvantages: none
...My Cairn Terrier…..She’s Called Holly…
My wife was looking for a cairn terrier for months and just about February of this year we spotted a pup for sale. It was about 30 miles away from where we lived but rather than listen to the wife moaning I decided to give it a ring. There was 3 left but only one was a bitch so we told them to keep it over and that we were on our way.
When we got there we were lead out to a huge farmhouse and there was our little Cairn terrier pup. My wife was all over it and I knew then that I was either going to be the worst in the world or be a lot off money down..Why are these pups so expensive, would someone tell me!
Anyway the Cairn Terrier is a lovely little dog and they don’t grow very big. They are a placid dog with typical terrier hair and a cute little face, a bit like...

Bouncing good fun!
Review of Cairn Terrier by
Punkyvix
Advantages: Gentle, loving, kind
Disadvantages: A bit too brave for their own good...
...The first time I saw Cairn terriers was on holiday in Devon when I was about 8 years old. There were these two dogs that looked like a cross between a teddy bear and an ewok & they were playing on the beach. They were so funny to watch- they'd bark at the waves, then jump into the sea to climb on the owner'd dinghy. They kept this up all day, never tireing. Before we left, I asked what breed they were. Cairn terrier was the reply I got.
Then, nearly two years later, I convinced my parents to let me have a puppy for my 10th birthday. We scoured the papers until we saw an advert for Cairns. Remembering the pair on the beach, my family decided a cairn pup would be ideal.
These dogs have real character. We got him home, and after he settled in a bit, we put him to bed. To stop him wandering off and leaving little 'presents' round the house...

Scrummy but do not tell Captain Buckett
Review of Cesar by
dave27
Advantages: Always gets eaten
Disadvantages: Embarrassing to buy
...Cesar - for man eaters who rip your throat out? No, the key thing is the missing letter 'A' in C(a)esar - less the emperor of the world than a little yappy thing. When I tell you that this stuff started out as 'Mr Dog' I think you get the picture...
Cesar is a dog food that comes in either tins or plastic containers with peel off lids and it's exclusively for the smaller breed of dogs as it includes a special yap proof ingredient...either that or a sound little kick to the abdomen should do the trick.
Mrs D is a big lover of the cairn terrier (very, very suspicious if you ask me, and even if you don't, still extremely sus) and so we get through a lot of this odd little delicacy. Cairn terriers are small dogs who like a lot of exercise and I guess they're well typical of the yapsters who eat this sort of muck.
It actually looks...

Great pet with undeserved reputation for snapping!
Review of West Highland Terrier by
marie_louise
Advantages: Cute, cuddly and smart
Disadvantages: Stubborn!
...I bought my dog, Holly, 6 years ago from a farmer near where we live.
West Highland White Terriers or Westie's are small and stocky slightly bigger than cairn or yorkshire terriers.
Westie's are very popular and 6 years ago we paid £300 so this probably has gone up by now.
My Westie was bought primarily because I suffer from allergies to many kinds of fur and I was told that as Westie's practically do not molt and their fur is very course I would not have any problems and this turned out to be very true in my case. (If you do suffer from allergies don't take my word for it, see if you can spend some time with a Westie).
Westie's are completely white and mine is 100% pet and was never intended for showing. This is just as well as she is very stubborn and loves to be boss of you (in a cute way)! She loves to please and although...

The cheaper option
Review of Wahl Clipper by
JackieC
Advantages: Cheap and cheerful
Disadvantages: Designed for humans
...I have an Old English Sheepdog, a very labour intensive dog for grooming and I was taking her to local dog groomers 2 to 3 times a year for clipping. This on average cost me £20 and it does add up, so I decided to have a go myself. instead of forking out £40 to £50 for a dog grooming kit I went to Argos and bought the cheapest hair clippers for £11.99 (they're hairdressing clippers, for humans not dogs).
These are just as good as the professional ones, apart from it takes quite a while to clip seriously tangled hair, and they come with the accessories - guards etc.
I've tried then on next door cairn terrier and used them over 6 times on my very large and hairy old english and they're still going strong. I'd recommend them to anyone who either justs wants to have a go to see if they can do it or anyone who thinks forking out over £40...

Westies. The Loyalist dog you can have
Review of West Highland Terrier by
k800ifan07
Advantages: Great Family pets, Great Personilty
Disadvantages: Some Medical problems such as Lock jaw, Skin Problems Etc
...and there Loyalty.
Care
Westies suffer from a thing called Lock Jaw. I think it when there jaw locks up and it hurts them to drink and eat. This only happens at a very young age and a trip down the vet fixes them right up.
They also Suffer a Skin issue but we been told it only occurs if you bath them to many times.
They also need grooming a few times a week as there far gets all messy. My dogs know when it either Bath or bush time as they will run and make it hard for you. lol
The westie in History
They come from scotland and i think they were from the Scottish Terrier and the Cairn Terriers.
I was lead to belive that westies were Designed to go down small holes and chase small animals out. they were called Scotish White Terrier but this was changed to Westie Highland White Terrier.
Overall
Overall i think they are great Family pets and i don...

They will take you over
Review of Member Advice on Keeping Dogs by
dave27
Advantages: Great love will be yours
Disadvantages: But also heartache
...Keeping dogs, eh? Just a bit of advice before we start ... when you decide to get yourself a dog (if you do), be prepared to give up yourself and your personal space because no matter what the dog, these creatures have an all too lovable habit of completely taking over your life.
I'll come back to the advice thing a bit later once I've set the scene by describing the dave27 experience in some detail...
Mrs D and her family have always been big Cairn Terrier lovers and they got their first one more than twenty years ago. Mrs D was in her teens then and she got VERY jealous of their new pup, but it didn't stop her nagging me like bloody mad when we first got married to get a Cairn.
I was dead set against at first and my comment always used to be, "Look, if you get a dog, I will bury you and it in the garden."
Humph, Mrs D...

A Dog Is For LIfe
Review of What You Need To Consider Before Buying A Dog by
rosehall
Advantages: a great addition to the family, lots of fun years
Disadvantages: if you dont know what you are doing, things can go wrong
..., often gentle in temperament and very quiet and restful. Need to consider the size of your house and car. Everything from collars, food to veterinary treatment all of which costs a whole lot more! These gentle giants also tend to have a shorter life span.
LARGE BREEDS (German Shepherd, Rottweiler,)
May be boisterous in play and more difficult to control if they were to be aggressive. Can have full swishing tails which can clear a table with one wag!
MEDIUM BREEDS (Border Collie, Springer Spaniel,Boxer,Dalmation.)
Suit many families, their homes and cars. Plenty of choice within this group.
SMALL BREEDS ( Cairn Terrier, Border Terrier, West Highland White Terrier)
These guys tend to be noisy. Small terriers which have been bred for vermin control can have quick snapping jaws which may make them unsuitable for families with small children...

Ooh that is better
Review of Anadin Paracetamol by
dave27
Advantages: Works well, easy to take
Disadvantages: Still makes we wanna chuck
...of Paracetamol whenever I feel that old familiar, nagging feeling coming on (but enough of Mrs D...)
Now there ain't a great deal more to say, except that Paracetamol come in a subtle little blue packet, with the capsules discretely sealed away in silver foil and women always seem to have a little selection of the wonder workers secreted away somewhere around their person, usually ferreted away within their voluminous handbags, on the left of the kitchen sink and underneath their pet Yorkshire Terrier (no, I'm joking, I mean Cairn Terrier, of course).
I have never found anything which is more effective at resolving a headache and the Paracetamol is one of the boons of the 20th Century......
