South Hampton Guest House - ok
Review of Southampton Guest House, Cambridge by ang_e11

Advantages: Reasonably Priced
Disadvantages: Very Small Rooms

...My partner and I stayed at the South Hampton Guest House for a weekend in early 2006. We choose the property because it was reasonably close to the centre of Cambridge Township (about 15-20 minutes walk) and also for it's price. We paid £45/night for the two of us including breakfast. The general décor was nothing to marvel about, a bit pokey and very old fashioned. However, keeping in mind what we paid our stay was reasonable. The rooms (I think there were 4 or 5 in total) were on the small side. Ours was fitted with a double bed, a single chair, one bedside table, a small wardrobe with several drawers attached and a tv mounted on the wall. There was a little side tray containing tea, coffee milk and a few biscuits. There was very little room for much else and we had to store our 1 suitcase on top of the wardrobe... Read review

amazing for tourists
Review of Cambridge in general by jamietilley

Advantages: astheticlly pleasing
Disadvantages: no entertainment

...Dont get me wrong Cambridge is nice and pretty and all but for the youth of today it shows really not much to do. Every summer thousands of tourists flood in to see the collages and old buildings so the city can get extremly crowded. The main things it has for young people is a division 2 football team and a few nightclubs and a cinema, which going by other cities is pretty rubbish. There is a big skate community though but unfortunatly with out a park to practice skills. all in all Cambridge is good for old and middle aged because of all the open job vacences and cheap houses but for the youth ive only got one word PANTS!... Serene Beauty
Review of Cambridge (England) by jonwhite

Advantages: Plenty to do and see
Disadvantages: None

.... The first college built in the city was Peterhouse and was founded in 1284. Many more colleges followed making this city the famous university city that it is today and a rival with the older Oxford University. For a fabulous view over the city you should visit the majestic tower of Great St Mary’s Church situated in King’s Parade from which you can marvel at the panorama of the area. Cambridge provides many attractions for the visitor. There are numerous museums to explore, I personally recommend the wonderful University Museum of Archaeology in Downing Street and the Ambridge Art and Holographic Centre situated off Magdalene Street. Both these venues are open all year round. Another museum worth visiting is the Fitzwilliam Museum, again open all year round and regarded as one of the nation’s chief ‘treasure houses... Cambridge Kicks Ass
Review of Cambridge University by SoosieK

Advantages: The best university in the country.
Disadvantages: None!

...So you are not a rich public school educated toffy nosed ponce? So? Neither am I, nor are my friends. I went to a northern comprehensive, lived in a semi on a housing estate, and like to go and get plastered in my local on a friday. And I am at Cambridge. After the whole Laura Spence thing, Oxbridge has basically got a bad press, being misrepresented as a finishing school for public school leavers. It is not. It is a great university, with both a great education and a great social life on offer. The courses are really good and very interesting, and the workload, though heavy, is managable and still leaves plenty of time to go out on the razz. The nightlife is cool, especially if you like cheese, with loads of clubs and colleges having parties and events on all the time. Also, there are millions of societies, and whatever you like... Avoid at all costs!
Review of Abbey Guest House, Cambridge by ofk33

Advantages: None
Disadvantages: Poor service and attitude to guests

...Staying in Abbey Guest House was an experience that left a bitter taste in my mouth. I went with a group of friends and when we arrived, we were given rooms with different shapes and sizes. One ended up in a terribly small room with a shower with boiling hot water. Another 2 friends were supposed to share a twin room, but one of the beds was a child-size bed. The rooms were not very clean and did not have phones, kettles or drinks. We realised after staying a few days that they were not going to change our bedsheets or clean our rooms and had to ask them to do so. They cleaned my room when I was out, but I discovered to my horror when I returned that they had not closed my room door properly. It was fortunate that I had locked all my things up, but to me, it was sloppy security. Breakfast was sad with unpalatable fare and super... Read review

Expensive way to dry your clothes
Review of Cambridge Gas Company by dippydi

Advantages: quick friendly customer advisors
Disadvantages: expensive

...Last year I was in my third year at university and lived with four lads (I'm female so this was an interesting choice!). After about a week of being there a representative came round from Cambridge Gas. I was out, so needless to say the lads were converted and believed this man when he promised Cambridge would be at least 30% cheaper. On the plus side, Cambridge were very quick to switch our gas suppliers without any problems. I also found they answered the phone quickly, something that is a rarity these days among customer services. This may have been due to Cambridge being a relatively small company...I'm not sure how big but I live an hour away from Cambridge in the East Midlands and I don't think it goes much further than that. The main problem with Cambridge is this 30% cheaper we were offered as students. Having a house... Read review

Pubs in Cambridge
Review of Cambridge in general by Scoobydoo

Advantages: Great choice
Disadvantages: If only the clubs were as good...

...Cambridge...not exactly known for its club scene (Cindy's, Chicago's etc - I need say no more), but in terms of pubs Cambridge must rank amongst the best of British cities. There are far too many good pubs in Cambridge to list them all, so I will restrict myself to a summary of those which are in my opinion the best. The Anchor - busy and bustling (in a good way, if you like that kind of atmosphere), but quite expensive. The Bath ('Ale') House - a controversial one this. Was recently changed from a very traditional pub into an ultra modern Hogs Head with sofas etc. Very 'nice' but... The Eagle - can get very crowded, popular with students (especially the sporty types), good atmosphere, but expensive. The Bun Shop - very odd (bicycles on the roof) but a good atmosphere and you can usually get a seat. Wine bar and Tapas bar in same... Read review

Traditional yet trendy...
Review of Cambridge University by emmorticia

Advantages: good atmosphere, great teaching, nice city
Disadvantages: hard work, Cam life can be stressful!

...miles out of the town centre. Ideally you want to pick a college that is within easy reach of wherever you will be having your lectures. - Size. Do you want to study at a big college or a tiny one? Trinity is the largest Cambridge college, but also has a reputation for housing pretentious rich students - you have been warned! - Reputation. Some colleges are renowned for their sports teams, some for drama or music, some for other things. Take a look at the colleges' individual websites or the Cambridge prospectus to find a college that meets your needs. Personally, I chose Queens. It was a decent size, the clubs, social activities and, of course, the bar all seemed excellent - and it was nice and close to the language faculty, which was ideal, as I didn't want a long trek to lectures...lectures at 9am is bad enough, let alone having to get... The biggest pub in Europe, supposedly.
Review of The Regal by emmorticia

Advantages: Cheap - good for those on a student budget!
Disadvantages: No music, and no atmosphere

...At only a hundred metres down the road from my Cambridge college, the Regal (a JD Wetherspoons pub) would seem to be the ideal place to go to grab a drink or a bite to eat of an evening. But, as with all pubs, this place has its advantages and disadvantages. Read on...... As mentioned in the title, the Regal is one of, if not the biggest pub in Europe, with a capacity of around 1,300 people. Formerly part of the Arts Cinema, the decor is in line with this theme, and gives the pub a personality, of sorts. Most of the decor is, however, aimed at the vast quantity of tourists who pass through Cambridge, offering memorabilia of the events of Cambridge throughout its history. The pub itself is both spacious and comfortable, except on Friday and Saturday nights, when bouncers hover round the doors to throw out any under-age drinkers... Read review

Victoria, but no Prince Albert
Review of Victoria Guest House by proxam

Advantages: Clean, comfortable and friendly
Disadvantages: Traffic noise

...I was working down in Cambridge a few weeks ago and the company thoughtfully pre-booked me accommodation at the Victoria Guest House on Arbury road. Rather more thoughtlessly, I was working at the opposite end of the city, so convenience was not their prime consideration. Arbury Road leads off from the inner ring road and is, in fact, relatively handy for the city centre (the north side, at least). Still, I'm getting paid for sitting in a traffic jam, so what do I care? The guest house occupies two former semi-detached Victorian villas in an area of similar houses. It's a fairly busy road and parking is quite limited. As I said, I was pre-booked so it was only a matter of turning up at the door and introducing myself to the owner who was very welcoming. During the course of our chat, he gave me some local info then mentioned... Read review
