...The African Nations Cup happens every 2 years, and the final of the 2002 event is tomorrow, between Senegal and Cameroon. Household names? maybe not, but Senegal will play France in the World Cup opener. 12 years ago, in another World Cup opener, Cameroon beat Argentina (Diego Maradona et all). Could history repeat itself? African football is very exciting, and generally attack minded, although its fair to say some teams have a defensive mentality - South Africa for one. Group A saw the hosts Mali play Liberia, Algeria and Nigeria. I cheered on Mali naturally and it was good to see them qualify, but also sad to see George Weah's last ever game for Liberia. ...The Town Buea is a town that is located at the foot of Mt. Cameroon in Central Africa.Once you get into the country through the Douala international Airport, it takes about an hour of driving to get to Buea.It is located in the Anglophone part of the country so the language spoken there would be English.The town is the capital of the South west Province which is one of the ten provinces in the Republic of Cameroon.Moving around the town is quite easy for you could easily get taxi cabs and the roads are all tarred. If you are looking for some fun head down to Molyko, which is where the Buea University campus is located.The area is quite lively when students are on campus.In the evenings there are lots of places where you can get grilled fish with either fried plantains or fried potatoes.There are a lot of drinking places also around... ...~ ~ I have to admit that I was very concerned about Ireland’s opening match against Cameroon this morning (1st June) that opened up their 2002 World Cup campaign in Asia. The loss of their Captain Roy Keane was a real blow, as he is without a question the most talented Irish player, and adds a different dimension to the side every time he takes the field. So I was hoping against hope that Ireland could somehow get something positive out of the Cameroon game, but after watching the opening game between current World Champion’s France, and another African nation, Senegal, I suspected that the Irish side were on a hiding to nothing. But, yet again, their big Irish hearts rose to the occasion, and they proved all the pre-match pundits wrong with a marvellous 1-1 draw, in a game that they could easily have won! ~ ~ The opening...
