Marvellous Melbourne
Review of General: Melbourne (Australia) by  snowbunni

Advantages: The Most Liveable City in the World
Disadvantages: A long way away from practically everywhere else!

...of immigrants, many of them relatively recent, and it shows. Melbourne's China Town, situated principally along Little Bourke Street, is the longest established Chinese settlement in the Western world, rivalling even those in San Francisco or London's Soho. Lonsdale St, nearby, is the cultural home of Melbourne's large Greek community, whereas Lygon St, a couple of blocks away in Carlton, and close to the University of Melbourne, is almost exclusively Italian. BAYSIDE; Melbourne extends around Port Phillip Bay, with a number of beautiful, leafy bay-side suburbs, and some fantastic, sandy beaches, some of which are less than 10 minutes from the city centre. Arguably the most charming of Melbourne's bayside suburbs is St.Kilda, about a 10 minute tram ride from the city centre. St.Kilda was Melbourne's most fashionable suburb in the 1920's and has... Melbourne from the source
Review of General: Melbourne (Australia) by  Jimigill

Advantages: All the food & drink
Disadvantages: none that i know of

...I must start by saying that i grew up in Melbourne and spent the best part of 20 years there. Now living in London I still pine for the unaffected, easy-going lifestyle that Melbourne engenders. Where to begin... Get a hotel near the centre of town, anywhere with a 3000 postcode is good or aim for the food and drink centres of St Kilda, Fitzroy, Carlton or Prahran. The airport is only half an hour from the city and i would recommend getting a taxi (about $AUD25). Hotel prices are going to vary quite a lot depending on where you stay, but hostels are plentiful in the above areas and average around $AUD30 a night - they are without a doubt the cleanest and best looked after hostels in the world. At the higher end of the market the central business district is full of 3-5 star hotels, ranging in price from $150 - $400 a night... Read review

Carlton Hotel Dublin Airport Quality
Review of Carlton Hotel Dublin Airport by  bananamanuk

Advantages: New build, price, high quality, service, location
Disadvantages: Some airport noise

...OVERVIEW I had not heard of the Carlton hotel chain prior to my visit to Ireland in late 2006, but it turned out to be a brand new 4 star modern hotel and the cheapest of this hotel class in Dublin at the time of my booking. I had already had a bad experience with a previous hotel in Ireland and was anxious that I didn’t want this episode repeated, so I took the plunge and booked with the Carlton. I was not disappointed and will be returning later this year. The hotel is ideal for short breaks, business meetings, people with an interest in aviation and families. LOCATION The hotel is located about 5 minutes drive from the main airport terminal. The hotel is new, it only opened about a year ago, it’s smart, modern and extremely competitively priced for hotels in this class, especially when using one of the many online... Read review

Carlton Bilbao - another travellers tale!
Review of Carlton Hotel, Bilbao by  koshkha

Advantages: Opulent, near the Guggenheim, best in town
Disadvantages: only that there's not more reason to go more often

...The first time I stayed at the Carlton it was entirely accidental. I had flown from Madrid to Bilbao with a Spanish colleague probably 10 years ago and our flight was so late that the hotel where we had bookings had given our rooms away to someone else. It was late, we were tired and grouchy and they offered to find us 2 rooms somewhere else. The Carlton - being the best (and most expensive) hotel in town - had two rooms. We rolled up in the wee small hours of the morning, paid an arm, a leg and a few other body parts and spent no more than about 6 hours in our rooms before heading off in the morning. HOWEVER, the Carlton was so beautiful and the rooms so lovely that I vowed that one-day I'd go back and that's exactly what I did. Circumstance of our Visit ********************* It was March 2004. Our wedding anniversary is the 14... Read review

Best HOTEL in Cannes - Carlton Intercontinental
Review of Carlton InterContinental, Cannes by  Superfly25

Advantages: This is one amazing hotel with everything you want in one of the greatest cities of France
Disadvantages: pretty much non-affordable for normal folks

...In september 2000 I was invited to the presentation of OPEL´s new car called Corsa. I was surprised that they did this presentation not in germany, but in Cannes, France. Furthermore I was really happy to see which hotel OPEL booked for the 3 day stay of their exclusive customers: The world famous Carlton Intercontinental Hotel at Cannes... Famous, some of you might ask and I say yes, famous it is. Most of you know that european film festival every year at Cannes. That hotel there is that historic building in which all the major actors, directors and plenty of wannabe´s are staying. The building itself is under a historic building law in france and so to uphold business in there the owners have to spent lots of money quite frequently to rebuild the beautiful historic outside of the hotel. It has 7 floors and on ground level... Read review

Having a Jolly time at the Carlton
Review of Jolly Carlton Hotel, Amsterdam by  Cinnamonsam

Advantages: Central location and value for money
Disadvantages: None

...When choosing a hotel in Amsterdam the traveller is faced with a multitude of choices and you're never sure exactly which hotel is good or bad. I hope this opinion helps to clear the confusion. We booked the Hotel Jolly Carlton from the internet where we got an excellent deal. The Hotel Jolly Carlton is owned by an Italian chain of hotels which have properties throughout Europe. It is situated right next to the Singel Flower Market and some of the rooms are lucky enough to overlook the Muntplein which chimes each hour on the hour 24 hours a day. The hotel reception has a luxurious feel and marble abounds. As first impressions count so much we knew we were in for a treat. The receptionist greeted us with typical Amsterdam cheer and smiles. The check-in process was quick and soon we were being portered to our room... Read review

'Hotel' My A*se
Review of Hotel Bakpak, Melbourne by  zoe_page

Advantages: Central, cheap, free 'breakfast'
Disadvantages: Tatty, grubby, impolite staff, very busy at all times

...Though I don't like to believe it, some things in life simply are too good to be true. I booked to stay for 3 nights in Melbourne and my criteria were: · cheap · my own room (a backpacker hostel was ok, but a dorm room was not) · centrally located · preferably with breakfast included With these things in mind, I surfed the net until I came across the Hotel Bakpak. It had its own website, which I always prefer, and looked reasonable. What's more, STA Travel were offering me a single room there, including breakfast, for a mere $70 for the entire duration of my stay. This is equivalent to 30 GBP, or a mere 10 GBP per night. That's probably the point I should have known something was up, but I didn't want to know, so went ahead and booked. **- Getting There -** About 6 weeks later I arrived in Melbourne. The Hotel offers... Read review

Melbourne - Nice but not as Enjoyable as Sydney
Review of General: Melbourne (Australia) by  shanemcdonald

Advantages: Lovely for a Short Stay, Good for day Trips
Disadvantages: Very Cold in Winter, Very Quiet in evenings

...I have one tip if you are intending on visiting Australia and that is "Come to Melbourne before you visit Sydney". We visited Melbourne in July (the middle of winter in Oz) having flown from Sydney which we had been living in for the past 7 months. Our first day in Melbourne, we froze and ended up in shops buying gloves and scarves. It is so much further south than Sydney, that it gets very cold in Winter with winds which cut through you, so be prepared if you are going between June and September. Accommodation in Melbourne is not great for the budget traveller. We found a place called 'The Lords Lodge' in the Rough Guide, it got 4 stars and they said it was very nice with clean facilities - they were very wrong. We ended up staying one night and found a really nice place called 'Toad Hall Hotel' {441 Elizabeth St., Melbourne... Read review

Excellent Hotel, not far from Lakefront Ouchy
Review of Hotel Carlton, Lausanne by  reddiguy

Advantages: Beautifully clean, excellent bathroom, nice balcony, good bed, location, price, parking, staff
Disadvantages: Current construction noise, average breakfast

...for a hotel of this class. If ever we stayed in Lausanne again, and could afford the high rates it would be great to stay on the lake front in Ouchy. Being more realistic, however, we wouldn't hesitate to return to the Nash Carlton, and would recommend it highly to others.... Read review
