Visit Silent Hill... If you dare!!!
Review of Silent Hill DVD by  ultrafrosty

Advantages: Very faithful and scary game to film conversion...
Disadvantages: Maybe a little to scary and disturbing for some...

...entertaining enough but by no means as good as they could have been, the question being asked by anyone even remotely interested in Silent Hill was whether it would do the source material justice or end up as average as the Resident Evil movies? One of the first pieces of good news about the Silent Hill movie was that it would be directed by French director, Christophe Gans - who is most well known for the strange period piece/horror/thriller The Brotherhood Of The Wolf (or in its original French title: Le Pacte Des Loups) so it was to be helmed by someone who certainly knows how to direct an effective and stylish horror story. So far so good… Then photos from the sets began to appear on the internet. They showed the deserted and rotting streets of Silent Hill and having played the games, I immediately thought of something very odd… I... Read review

welcome to Silent Hill we've been expecting you
Review of Silent Hill DVD by  tinac37

Advantages: not to long
Disadvantages: bad acting

...A few years ago my husband had a play station game called Silent Hill. He loved the game and I watched him play and complete all three of the Silent Hill games. All the while I was thinking, this is the sickest game I have ever seen and who ever thought it up should be locked up. Then they made it a film. This is with out a doubt the weirdest, sickest, goriest film I have ever seen. I wont mention the game again as the film is quite different and this is a DVD review. The main story Rose (Radha Mitchell) and Christopher (Sean Bean) adopted a baby girl called Sharon and bring her up as her own, however Sharon has problems. She sleep walks and speaks of an old mining town in west Virgina called Silent Hill but when she wakes she can't remember anything about it. In a desperate attempt to cure her daughter from these night... Read review

Silent Hill - where the unimaginable horrors live
Review of Silent Hill DVD by  Stenly7981

Advantages: Great game to movie conversion, real horror movie
Disadvantages: Can't think any, but maybe too scary for some viewers

...from Silent Hill 1. The Story : Rose and Christopher Da Silva has an adopted daughter called Sharon who has been experiencing severe nightmares and up to the stage of sleepwalking. Sharon keeps rambling about "Silent Hill" in her sleeps. The couple tried doctors, psychologist and none can help. So thus the name of "Silent Hill" seems to be the only clue to help her beloved daughter. Despite of Chris's disapproval of taking Sharon to Silent Hill, Rose embarks to Silent Hill with her daughter. However, the road to Silent Hill is not an easy access. Rose got involved in a high speed chase between herself and a police officer which ends up in a crash for both them. When she wakes up, Sharon has disappeared and Rose is at the entrance to the deserted town of Silent Hill. As she begins the search for her daughter, she found out... Read review

Silent Hill Movie
Review of Silent Hill DVD by  stevogarvey

Advantages: A good watch, some interesting adaptaions.
Disadvantages: Not entirly true to the video games.

...THE MOVIE REVIEW RATHER THAN DVD FEATURES! INTRO The Silent Hill DVD is a 2006 Horror film which was directed by Christoph Gans and was written by Roger Avary. The film takes its idea from the adaptation of Konami's Silent Hill video game. The film takes its inspiration from numerous Silent Hill video games including Silent Hill, Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill 3. However the main body of the movie has its own adaptation. CAST Radha Mitchell as Rose Da Silva, Sean Bean as Christopher Da Silva Jodelle Ferland as Sharon Da Silva and Alessa Gillespie Laurie Holden as Cybil Bennett Deborah Kara Unger as Dahlia Gillespie Alice Krige as Christabella PLOT The movie depicts a mother who takes her daughter to Silent Hill because of her out cries of "SILENT HILL" when sleeping. Welcome. To Silent Hill.
Review of Silent Hill DVD by  sbreame

Advantages: Great effects, sounds, Game to film.
Disadvantages: Slow in middle, Predictable to SH gamers.

...Hill, the parents get worried as they have no knowledge of such a place. When Christopher (Father of Sharon, played by Sean Bean) and Rose (Adopted mother of Sharonplayed by Radha Mitchell) do some research on the town, they feared that taking Sharon to Silent Hill would cure her illness of intense sleep walking and the eerie mumbling. They find out that Silient Hill is a ghost town after an event of a fire, which still burns to this day, was the cause of wiping the towns population. Against Chris's wishes, Rose decides to take Sharon to the town. On the way, they stop off at a gas station, only to be stopped by a curious cop. As Rose steps out of the jeep, she notices Sharon's drawn pictures, horrified, Rose wakes up Sharon to show how her pictures has turned into a demonic notebook full of hatred and evil. When they finally reach... Read review

Boring Hill
Review of Silent Hill DVD by  afy9mab

Advantages: Nice end credits
Disadvantages: Overlong, dull, unscary, riddled with plot holes and awful performances

...When their adopted daughter takes to sleepwalking herself into danger, Rose and Christopher want to get to the bottom of it. So when Rose hears Sharon talking about Silent Hill in her sleep, she resolves to find out what it means. Discovering it is a ghost town hit by a mysterious fire that still rages beneath the streets, Rose drives her little girl there. But on the road outside town, she crashes the car and comes round to find her daughter missing. Once she reaches the city limits, she discovers that it isn't just memories that stalk the streets. I wish people would stop making computer game adaptations. I know the law of averages says a decent one must appear at some point, but I can't bear to sit through all the dross until that occurs. French director Christophe Gans has pretty good pedigree. He was at the helm of "Brotherhood... Read review

There's Nothing Silent About This Hill
Review of Silent Hill DVD by  Heidious

...TECHNICAL INFO Release date - April 2006 Certificate - 15 Directed By - Christopher Gans Screenplay By - Roger Avary STORYLINE = Based on the popular Playstation game of the same name, the film adaptation follows Rose as she desperately searches for her missing daughter, Sharon, in the foggy, desolate ghost town of Silent Hill. Silent Hill is the name of the town her daughter would shout during her sleep walks. Against her husbands' wishes, Rose takes Sharon to the haunted location in the hope of finding some answers. Silent Hill is the greatest horror ever
Review of Silent Hill DVD by  XaanderLe

Advantages: Good solid plot, good acting, follows the story of the games well.
Disadvantages: Lack of extras

...This is one in a long line of films that are based upon video games. The problem with video game based movies is that Hollywood gets lazy. To the point where it just cuts out the characters from a game, adds on something which they call a 'plot' and then sticks it onto discs. Well, that's about to change. Silent Hill has done the complete opposite. Rather than just grab whatever characters he could find from the games and super-gluing them to film, Christophe Gans has actually done something other directors seem allergic to - he actually looked at the source material. In terms of plot, Silent Hill is almost identical to the 1999 PSone game of the same name, with a town that shifts from light, foggy sections to dark, gore filled sections. But this isn't just some B movie horror, this is a horror film with a brain, and a sense... Read review

Silent Hill
Review of Silent Hill DVD by  Pyrokeet

Advantages: genuinely disturbing
Disadvantages: perhaps a bit hackneyed

...When confronted by the board displaying the currently showing films at my local cinema, I must admit that Silent Hill was not my first choice, and I was persuaded into going to see it by majority rule amongst the group I was with. However, I'm very glad of this turn of events, as I would say that Silent Hill is my favourite of the new releases I've seen so far this year. For those of you that don't know, Silent Hill is based on a PlayStation game. Now, computer games - particularly action games such as this - are not reknowned for having great storylines, so I was not expecting amazing things from this computer game adaption. Well, my expectations were realised in this regard: the plot was wafer-thin and offered no intellectual substance. However, it was the way that this plot was executed that really drew my attention. The basic... Read review

Making a mountain out of a "moel" - hill.
Review of The Englishman Who Went Up A Hill But Came Down A Mountain DVD by  MAFARRIMOND

Advantages: Wonderful welsh landscapes. Easy-watching and witty.
Disadvantages: A little too cutesy in places

...Here in Wales, we are extremely proud of our mountainous landscape. The 1995 film, "The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill But Came Down a Mountain" is based on a true story that exemplifies that pride. The title of the film is a synopsis of the plot in itself. The film is set in 1917 in a small welsh village, Ffynnon Garw, which is overlooked by what is fondly referred to by the villagers as "the mountain". The villagers are understandably horrified when two English cartographers employed by Her Majesty's Ordnance Survey Office arrive, saying that their mountain is only hill!! You see a mountain has to be at least 1,000 feet high. Anything smaller than this is a large hill - and Ffynnon Garw's mountain was only 984 feet. Ah, but all is not lost. This was but a preliminary reading. To get an accurate reading, the cartographers have... Read review
