Dennis Mongley
Review of Fiction by  Redline17

Advantages: Kind of funny.
Disadvantages: Targeted at certain audiences.

...What you have to bear in mind is the fact that this piece of writing is targeted at a 14-15 year old age group. I wrote it last year as part of my English AS level, and received a good grade for it so I thought I would share it with you. It deals with the themes that are common to the targeted age group, and the piece uses simplified vocabulary so that this age group finds it easier to understand, as you will see through my lexical choices. But for now, enjoy! ***Dennis Mongley*** Dennis Mongley was sixteen years of age. He was short, fat and wore NHS spectacles with thick brown frames. He dressed smartly, obeyed the school code of conduct and achieved straight A’s in all of his subjects. Dennis Mongley was a freak. And it was as such that Dennis Mongley found himself, not unusually, in a predicament... Read review

Gwen Stefani: L.A.M.B
Review of Love Angel Music Baby - Gwen Stefani by  Bouncebackability

Advantages: She experiments with a mixture of styles
Disadvantages: at times the tracks can appear too different

...Well I'm sure everybody knows who the iconic Gwen Stefani is by now (unless you've been living on another planet for a good few years that is!) Gwen shot to fame with the band No Doubt and had many hits such as "Don't speak", "Underneath it all", "Hella Good" and "It's my life." No Doubt did well around the globe which is mostly thanks to front-person Gwen Stefani, who was to No Doubt as Freddie Mercury was to Queen. 3 years ago Mrs Stefani decided to go solo releasing her debut album L.A.M.B which stands for Love, Angel, Music, Baby. L.A.M.B is also the name of her fashion brand which she designs. This album has a mixture of styles, experimenting with 80's pop, rap, R&B and many more. ***Tracklisting*** 01. What You Waiting For? 02. Rich Girl 03. Hollaback Girl 04. Cool 05. Bubble Pop Electric 06. Luxurious 07. Harajuku... Read review

DENNIS, BATH TIME by IanJC
Review of Dennis & Gnasher Cartoon Capers - Beano Books by  IanJC

Advantages: read below
Disadvantages: read below

...Whether your way up high, or way down low, the best of the best comes in the form of the Beano! Yes - it is true! Now totally enjoyable by all the family and still only the cost of a really big Mars Bar. Having produced over 3000 editions of this timeless classic, the Beano/Dandy studios still continue to reel off this now completely unopposed, longest ever-running children’s comic. Undisputed. And even with things like 'Pokémon' and other stuff like that, the Beano still stands firm in now the widest crowd ever seen. Nowadays, long after the time when I spent a few pennies on it, Dennis the Menace still features, with Billie Whizz, Ivy the Terrible, Baby Bea, Gnasher and Gnipper, and this week they did a special Lord Snooty page. It still has the Beano club, with more and more jokes and pictures, yet the stories... Read review

A Complete Load of the Brown Stuff
Review of The Da Vinci Code - Dan Brown by  Soho_Black

Advantages: I suppose I should be grateful it's not longer
Disadvantages: Poor writing and characterisation

.... Brown hasn’t written them well at all, meaning they never really come off the page at you and remain two dimensional characters and nothing more. I found myself not caring who was still alive at the end and whether the police would catch up with them. This takes the edge of the mystery, as when you’ve got two sides competing and you really don’t give a damn who wins, the mystery also becomes an irrelevance. I went through the whole book waiting for something to happen that would pique my interest and I’m still waiting. Brown hasn’t made the clues terribly convincing, either. There doesn’t seem to be a great deal of work involved in solving them and when the answers are revealed, they always seem to be very simplistic, even more so when you consider that the people trying to solve them are specialists in this field. Maybe Brown was working... Read review

a:m = Amazingly Monstrous
Review of McVities a:m Cereal Bites by  Craggles84

Advantages: Errrr some people will definitely like them
Disadvantages: Oily, Sour, Bad Aftertaste

...So here we are presented with yet another breakfast alternative for people on the move, or just lazy people can’t be bothered with the effort of making breakfast for themselves. Now I will admit that there was a period in time when I joined this cult and became one of the many skipping the time consuming meal of breakfast and opting instead for a snack alternative. In my case I chose to eat different varieties of the Kellog’s Nutri-Grain bars but, I eventually found that I was snacking much more frequently throughout the day hence, I returned to my Bran Flakes. So a trip to my local Safeway and 36p later and I’m staring at a 30 gram packet of these new a:m cereal bites. I opted for the berry flavour because that’s all that was available at the time and in all honesty these were quite appealing anyway. The other flavours available were... Read review

a:m, p:m any mmmmmmm you like
Review of McVities a:m Cereal Bites by  kimking

Advantages: Quick and easy
Disadvantages: not many in bag

...Walking into my local Sainsbury’s store one day, I saw one of those little tables where they give you a taste of something they want to promote. Realising that a freebee was on offer I hurried over to claim mine. On the table were a couple of little bags of things called ‘a:m cereal bites’ made by Mc Vities. I had seen these before but never tried them. I this was about to be rectified. They are little square pillow shaped biscuits; the outside is made from cereal, and is really nice and crunchy, with a lovely sweet taste. While the inside is a lovely fruity cream filling all soft a smooth mmmmm. The Bites come in different flavours, Orange, Apricot (my favourite), and berry. They come in little bags containing 30g each, which in turn come in multi packs of 5 = 150grams. The ingredients are: - (For the Apricot flavour... Read review

A:M Morning Slice "A Sugar Filled Breakfast"
Review of McVities a:m Apple Morning Slice by  ReviewDude

Advantages: None
Disadvantages: A Suger Filled Breakfast, High Amounts Of Fat.

...I started having A:M Morning Slices around a month ago. I had just gone on a diet and thought the bar would give me all the goodness I needed to start the day without having to get fruits, ceral and milk. Your paying around 20-30p for the bar. The forest Fruits bar is made up of a kind of thin wheat layer. In the middle you will find a small layer of different kind of berrys made into a glue like mixture. There's no need to worry about a mess as the bar doesn't crumble. It holds together well even after a number of big bites. The inside has been pushed in so well that it also stays put. The middle has been despenced evenly around the inside. The result being a nice big taste of fruit with every bite. The wheat outside is ok but nothing special. It really needs the fruit and a pile of sugar to taste it up. Maybe not the ideal... Read review

Has Dan Brown A Hidden Agenda?
Review of Angels and Demons - Dan Brown by  the_mad_cabbie

Advantages: A cracking good read.
Disadvantages: tainted by allegations of an "anti-Christian" agenda

...not kept in a total vacuum, and it’s been nicked by the dreaded Illuminati (in a total vacuum container) who intend using it to completely annihilate the Vatican on the eve of the election of a new Pope. Meanwhile an Illuminati assassin has kidnapped the leading four Cardinals who would be most likely to be the new Pope from the Vatican, and intends to publicly and brutally murder them one by one. Langdon and Vittoria Vetra, the murdered priest/scientist’s daughter, head for Rome and the Vatican in an attempt to foil the dastardly plot of the Illuminati, and to save the day. That’s the plot of the novel in a nutshell, and a damned fine novel it is too! In fact, it wouldn’t be going too far to say that I probably enjoyed it every bit as much as Brown’s later runaway success, the Da Vinci Code. It’s tightly written, full of suspense, has... JACKIE BROWN, SHE'S A WHOLE LOTTA WOMAN
Review of Jackie Brown DVD by  j_mcb

Advantages: Tarantino's directorial aspects
Disadvantages: Doesn't live up to P.F.

...of people we just love to love. (Sorry for my American terminology e.g. movies, I blame countless years of American high-school TV shows and their rotting on my poor mind). 1997 saw Tarantino’s third written-and-directed-by feature “Jackie Brown” hit the silver screens. This edgy thriller boasts the usual suspects of Tarantino films (e.g. the biggest stars that exist on God’s green earth!) stepping into the shoes of a group of unique characters in the unseen underworld of the USA. The story is of typical Tarantino; it is rather a binding of six individual stories and their connections in a tale of conning, deceit and down-right greed. Rather reflecting on the themes of human nature might I add (Media Studies exam the other day, I’m sorry). The stories are based around $500,000 that is being smuggled across the border from Mexico... Read review

KENWOOD - THE COMPLETE ANTIDOTE TO WINDSOR CASTLE
Review of Kenwood House by  RICHADA

Advantages: Superb rural setting. Magnificent art collection. The stunning room shown above.
Disadvantages: Woefully small car park.

...at all at this time of day working our way around he old "North Circular" route, admiring the new Wembley Stadium construction site on the way. Situated in Hampstead and adjacent to Hampstead Heath, Kenwood turned out to be just 13 miles from our starting point. This is part of London that we do not know at all and I was really surprised at just how affluent it is here, we travelled up to Kenwood off the A1 past huge gated mansions. As directed by the brown English Heritage road signs we entered the car park twenty minutes before the house opened at 11.00a.m. There was not one single space to be found, for what turned out to be a large site, the car parking here is woefully inadequate. We were lucky, driving round and round the car park eventually a dog walker arrived and vacated a space. Tiny as it is, the car park is very shady so... Read review
