WHITE LADDER - David Gray
Review of White Ladder - David Gray by
nadams
Advantages: Talented artist, inspirational lyrics
Disadvantages: Many radio stations are not playlisting his songs
...With his familiar head-nodding during live performances, David Gray is becoming more familiar, not least for his ‘sheep-style’ voice, which, in my opinion, is one of the most distinctive in recent years.
White ladder starts with the familiar ‘Please Forgive Me’, which, being a very easy going, yet uplifting tune eases you into the album itself
The more familiar ‘Babylon’ follows, which follows the trend of the previous track, both feeling very chilled, whilst his distinctive voice continues to lift the mood.
The album ten moves into the more obscure tracks, which, although relatively unknown, more than live up to the standard that you would expect from this talented artist.
Track four, ‘We’re Not Right’, does not follow the true form of the CD and seems to go against the grain...

A great album - David Gray
Review of White Ladder - David Gray by
blockidge
Advantages: Nice music, well written and easy to listen to
Disadvantages: Only 50 minutes on the CD
...White Ladder, by David Gray is relatively new album, well worth buying. All the songs on the album are good. Sometimes albums have few good songs on, then some to just fill the rest of the CD. Not so with this album. Admittedly, the best songs are at the beginning, 'Please forgive me', and the excellent 'Babylon', but the whole album is great to listen to.
The beat and background music seem to relax you, and the words and lyrics add to the atmosphere. David Gray has a very distinctive voice, not dissimilar to an amateur singer, but it fits right in with the music. Each song tells a story and is not repetitive like some songs these days, and although some songs have a very 'modern' beat (R+B?), the music will still be popular in years to come.
The CD has only approximately 50 minutes of music, but better that, than the last...

DAVID GRAY'S WHITE LADDER TO SUCCESS
Review of White Ladder - David Gray by
itscharlotte
Advantages: no weak links on the album, thought provoking lyrics
Disadvantages: none
...After David Gray's success at the Brit Awards, his album was selling at lower price and liking the first two singles off it I decided to buy it. I was not disappointed. With 10 excellent tracks there are no weak links that you find on some albums. 6 of the 10 tracks on the album were written by David Gray, which is very rare on albums which are released now. He proves he is a true musician and not just a karoke singer, as he plays the guitar piano and keyboards. The strongest tracks on the album are Please forgive me, Babylon and This Years Love (which is been released as a single soon). This is David Gray's 4th album but it is his first he has had any recognition for here in the UK (I think he has been big in Ireland for awhile now). Critics are calling him a genius and the quotes on the front of the album are deserved. 'It...

David Gray
Review of White Ladder - David Gray by
MarcusPerkins
Advantages:
Disadvantages:
...David Gray's first album 'White Ladder' was advertised on TV prior to release and the advert built it up in the same way Radioheads 'The Bends ' was touted as the best album ever. I first heard the album at a freinds and was taken by the strength of Gray's vocals in what is a melodic and soulful range of tracks. His distinctive style is like no other that I have heard and coming from a Metal/Thrash background, I was surprised that I liked this album so much. I would reccommend that everybody should listen to this this album and not just rate on the one song that has entered the charts....

David Gray
Review of White Ladder - David Gray by
beck100
Advantages: Very mellow
Disadvantages: Couple of terrible tunes
...White Ladder sees David Gray make something of a departure from his usual style, a more modern sound, adding differing beats and electronic sounds to his more traditional acoustic guitar and piano in a successful attempt to widen his appeal. A very mellow album ideal for chilling out to. He has a great voice and is a very talented singer/songwriter.
"Babylon" is the track most people will recognize, but the album has better tracks such as "My oh my" and "We're not right" and other beautiful tunes. There are a couple of dissapointing tracks such as "Forgive Me" and "Say Hello..." but overall the quality is excellent. Not quite as good as the current Coldplay & Toploader releases but definately worth buying....

David Gray makes me smile
Review of White Ladder - David Gray by
Kedge
Advantages: easy listening, great lyrics and melody
Disadvantages: It was recorded in his house
...I first heard the album when my mum got it, she has great taste in music so I had a listen.I liked the album instantley. He has very raw vocals with a dylanesque sound to it. Although the album can be construde as solem I found it refreshing and invigorating. He writes about real life and experiences good or bad. I've since seen gray in concert and his abillity to sound just as good if not better in the flesh was outstanding I recommend that you buy white ladder and go and see Gray in concert....

Gray at his best-and worst
Review of Sell Sell Sell - David Gray by
Draig_Wrecsam
Advantages: Several lively, upbeat numbers, that you will soon be singing along to!
Disadvantages: The disappointment of the title track 'Sell, Sell, Sell'
...is unfortunately just to hard to get in to.
4- 'Hold on to Nothing'
A change in tempo and style for the 4th track. A beautiful, yet simplistic melody with lyrics that most can relate to. This song wouldn't be out of place on 'Lost Songs'or even 'White Ladder', but is fitting on this album as there several more songs in this style on this album.
5- 'Everytime'
A return to a more upbeat pace, with an especially catchy chorus. It's maybe not Gray at his best but is certainly enjoyable, and the use of the harmonica is certainly interesting!
6- 'Magdalena'
One of my favourite David Gray tracks of all time. Yet another upbeat song with slightly more simplistic but catchy lyrics. The tune is excellent and you'll be guaranteed to be humming it the minute it's finished! Probably the best track on the album.
7- ' Smile'
A return to a more simpler...

Far Away From A Gray Day!
Review of White Ladder - David Gray by
micksheff
Advantages: Very easy To Listen Too
Disadvantages: Quite Melancholy
...White Ladder by David Gray was released in the UK in the Spring of 2000, although it had been available in Ireland since 1998 where it had attracted rave reviews and a cult following.
It is a collection of 10 tracks with a very laid back acoustic feel. The songs themselves are quite bittersweet and poetic covering most emotions from love, passion and anger.
Listening to the superb quality of the tracks on the CD it is hard to believe that this, his fourth album and most commercially successful to date was actually self financed and released on his own record label IHT, as David had been dropped by his record label shortly after the release of his previous album.
It was recorded in the bedroom of his London flat with the windows open and cars, lorries and buses rumbling past…..
The track listing is as below
1 - Please...

David makes for an excellent play
Review of White Ladder - David Gray by
craigy_baby_2000
Advantages: Good tracks, popular artist, very easy listening
Disadvantages: Could be too much in 'dance' style for some people
...David Gray is someone that now I really admire musically, as well as just someone who has released a couple of songs which I have liked within the past few months. Not only are the two songs that he has released exceptional, but this album is brilliant in that it demonstrates his excellence not only as a musician, but also as an artist.
I bought the album because I am a great fan of his two singles that he has so far released in the UK (Babylon and Please Forgive Me). I think that the singles that he has released a lot so far are possibly the best, however there are still some excellent songs available on the album, and I am sure that I will like them more when I listen to the album more thoroughly, as indeed I think that other people would do too.
Although the album is best suited for those people who appreciate David for his...
