Boycot - No Way !
Review of Boycotting the Beijing Olympic Games, should politics have a place in sports? by
prashantmaxsteel
Advantages: great suff
Disadvantages: time is less and writing space is less
...Olympics and Politics are inseparable.
During the cold war era, US and Soviet camps used Olympics as a weapon. This year's Olympic was awarded to China with a political motive alone. China has emerged as a major World power in almost every fields and no country is able to counter weigh this. On top of this, China is not a Democratic nation and a communist nation.
Olympics will help China come out into the open and be a part of the open world. This has far reaching economic, social, military, political effects. Issues like Tibet will be handled more humanly. The world will feel not threatened by rising China and diffuse tensions. It will help the world understand China better and accept the fact that China is a world power rather than swallow with pain!
Boycotting the Olympics wil have no effect on China. Today the world needs China...

Shop till you drop at De Bradelei Wharf
Review of Designer outlet by
brittle1906
Advantages: Well known names, discount prices
Disadvantages: Not always a full range of sizes
...and china sections many well known makes are available at knock down prices, the Egyptian cotton range of towels are well worth buying at pounds under High Street prices as are the Wedgewood and Denby china ranges.
On my last visit , we went with the intention of looking for boots for my other half, but after being 'tempted' by a lambswool sweater, a Tog 24 fleece, some lingerie and a £1 bargain bin skirt, we abandoned the mens footwear department and had a coffee in the 'Waves' cafe instead!
The complex is built on the historic Wellington Dock, situated behind the main sea front Marine Parade. Parking is plentiful and as your parking fee of £2.50 is refunded when you spend over £5.00 in store, I think it is very reasonable. There are a good number of disabled parking spaces which are situated close a ramp entrance. The main entrance...

What so special?
Review of Chinatown (Singapore) by
Autumn-Swallow
Advantages: Chinese New Year decoration.
Disadvantages: Not very special
...There is actually nothing very special about the China Town in Singapore. The main reason is that Singpore itself is dominated by Chinese, so, virtually most of the places in Singapore can be considered as China Town.
Perhaps the only thing that is special about this China Town is during the Chinese New Year. During this festival, the buildings and the road will be dressed with colourful bulds featuring figure that is related to Chinese New Year, for example, the dragon and so on. Other than that, I don't find anything very special here....

International Relations: Sweet and Sour
Review of The United States and China - John King Fairbank by
frkurt
Advantages: Great history and insight into China and Sino-American relations
Disadvantages: A bit dated now, but historically useful
...of importance, 'The United States and China', by John King Fairbank. When I first studied political science as an undergraduate, I had completed the requirements for my primary major without having once heard a lecture or participated in a discussion of any substance on the topic of China. Perhaps this is because the prominence of the Soviet Union in the superpower relations, and most political scientists when discussing international relations preferred to focus on economic powers (Japan, Western Europe, emerging markets and resource-rich areas), or on comparative democracies, both of which do not include China. China has been, and continues to be, a mystery in most Western eyes, including those of scholars and political strategists.
It has only been with the breakup of the Soviet Union that the prominence of China has been increased. No longer...

Do I Need a Pick and Shovel too.
Review of Wheal Martyn China Clay Museum (Cornwall) by
wulise
Advantages: Seeing a piece of history that is also valid today.
Disadvantages: Sleep Hill to climb!
...The Wheal Martyn China Clay Museum at St. Austell makes for a great day out. It is part of the industrial heritage of Cornwall. Two prestigious 18th Century porcelain companies fought to provide the best clay possible. Wheal Martyn China Clay Museum portrays this story. The Wedgwood company brought their clay to make tableware fit for royalty, directly from Cornwall’s mines. Today, Cornwall’s single biggest industry is the processing of China Clay.
The museum is set within a twenty-six acre site of two former 19th century china clay works. Remember to look out for the china clay conservation areas, which are turning Cornwall green again. Wheal Martyn is no exception, in that it has its own conservation area on site. It is part of the Trevithick Trust as well.

Good portryal of Communist China
Review of Wild Swans - Jung Chang by
raimbow
Advantages: Make you thik long and hard about how good your life is in comparison.
Disadvantages: Can't put the book down!
...What can I say about this book other than absoloutly fantastic!
Before I read this book i knew absoloutly nothing about China or communist China at the start of the 20th century.
The book is mainly about three women the authors Grandmother, the authors Mother and the author her self. It tells of life pre-communisim under the Kuomintang, about the civil war in China and then about life with the comunists. And how the chinese race turned into living zombies under the rather eccentric leader Mao.
The three generations show the change that China went through, from the feet binding traditions of the past, the zombie race of the communism then to the breakthrough of people actually being able to have contact with the outside world.
It's the winner of the 1992 NCR book award and the 1993 British book of the year award, if that wasn...

Peace and Tranquility in Shanklin Chine
Review of Shanklin Chine, Isle of Wight by
amytheduck
Advantages: Peaceful and very cool on a hot day!
Disadvantages: Not suitable for wheelchair users
...Stepping into Shanklin Chine is like stepping into another world. Peaceful, tranquil and calm are words that spring to mind when I think back on my visits to Shanklin Chine, and I definitely recommend a visit.
**History and Location**
Shanklin Chine is located in Shanklin Old Village on the Isle of Wight. Shanklin is a small, historic seaside town, located next to Sandown on the Eastern side of the Island. Formation of the Chine or 'gorge' has taken place over 10,000 years. It's quite strange to think that you're walking through something that has taken so long to form! The word 'chine' means a deep, narrow ravine, and the word is now only used on the Isle of Wight and Dorset. Shanklin Chine drops down 105ft to sea level, and is just over a quarter of a mile long.
You can access the Chine in two ways. The first is from within the Old...

LEEthal Weapon
Review of Once Upon A Time In China - Complete Trilogy (Wide Screen) by
king_of_zombie_lurve
Advantages: An endless classic
Disadvantages: Buy sub-titled, the dubbing is awful
...Once Upon A Time In China is simply a film of epic proportions. Set in the late nineteenth century shortly before the occupation of China by foreign forces. The film surrounds the life of Wong Fei Hung (Played superbly by Jet Lee), a legendary figure from China who lived from 1850 to 1910 (Approximately), and is similar the British Robin Hood.
The theme of Once Upon A Time In China is not one of race or colour (This is dealt with in the sequel). But concerns the concepts of honour and duty (The banners declaring "Bravery Soaring" and "Magnamity Overflowing", are an indication of the theme’s at work here). To simply state a singular theme for this film would be an understatement, for it is too multi-layered. Corruption by money, personal responsibility, cultural identity, justice versus law, and heritage versus progression...
