A dense server that takes 6 disks
Review of HP ProLiant DL380 G3 - Xeon 3.2 GHz by
grovej
Advantages: Takes 6 disks in a 2U package
Disadvantages: Not a great deal
...where the manageability of HP servers shines through is the ability to carry out system firmware upgrades when the operating system is loaded, ideal if you have servers that are not close to you. HP also provide various means of configuring your server with the operating system you can use either the enclosed Smart Start CD or if you have a lot of servers to deploy there is a scripting tool kit, and for the very large enterprise there is the Rapid Deployment Kit based on Altiris Deployment Server, unfortunately this last option does require the purchase of a licence but it is well worth it if you have lots of servers.
Bundled with every server is a copy of HP Insight manager which is a web based console that uses SNMP traps from the server it can manage you whole server and desktop estate, it is basic monitoring but for a small company...

Server City Colocation Review
Review of ServerCity.co.uk by
Sunray24B
Advantages: Cost, Service, Accesibility (Internet access)
Disadvantages: Location of server house (Stratford, London)
...My clans server has been colocated with them for the last 3 years. Set up was straightforward, they supplied IP details and settings which I then preset before taking the server to their server house. They CAN set it up from scratch for you, but WILL charge to do so. I met one of their engineers there and within a few minutes the server was up and running.Since then in the 3 years its been with them, its 'downtime' has been restricted to 1 day, for which I received a week of credit. Reason for downtime was given as a DOS (denial of service) attack on the server house. We were credited with a weeks use for that.Others have offered service but none could match them in terms of connection, cost and availability.
Our on line gaming clan has members in : Croatia,Ireland,Sweden,Holand,Italy, Scotland,America and Belgium. All have great...

Server that works. Well sort of.
Review of JRun 4 Licence by
andycharger
Advantages: Fast capable work well with finished software
Disadvantages: Lousy on Developing software. Crashes and freezes
...and starts spewing out problems, it will stick at a certain point. The only way to unfreeze it is to CTRL and C it to get it going. Sometimes this casues the server to crash and die though.
However, on a well developed and debugged piece of software, it will run quite happily without falling over.
Price.
To buy it costs $899 or about £600 for a licence. This is for one instance of JRUN4 Used in a development enviroment or Commercial setting. You need one licence per application.
Overall.
A good server but very resource hungry. Expect to be forever restarting it in a development environment but it is very stable on a finished bit of software....

MS DOS
Review of Microsoft DOS (All Versions) by
gametester1985
Advantages: Simply
Disadvantages: not convenient
...Preface --------
My first PERSONAL COMPUTER was a 386er. I bought him in 1991. Was supplied when operating system MS-DOS 5.0 MS DOS is the first operating system out of the house Microsoft. DOS operating system stands for disk. Version 5.0, that I my particular mentioned, would pay still onto few floppy disks.
What is DOS?
-------------
Presumably each already overheard from DOS, however, not have aller worked still with it. Therefore, I will give a short introduction here for the better sense.
MS-DOS still had no graphical user interface such as Windows 95. everything what one wanted to do did one by means of commands. One could commands therefore short on a text screen which were then carried out.
The screen typically looked as:

The cursor then flashed there and one could set to.

Dame me this is good
Review of DameWare NT Utilities Licence by
Calldean
Advantages: Makes life soooooooooo easy
Disadvantages: Can get bogged down as there is so much in it
...computers you have added in. When you start DameWare it will seek out new computers on your network.
If it doesn’t show any you can add them in yourself if you know the machine name or IP address.
Once you have added a computer in you can start using DameWare properly.
Mini Remote-Control:
-----------------------------
Does what is says on the box. This allows you to remote a machine, and use it as if you were sat at the machine. It displays what the remote machine is doing in a window on your desktop.
Doesn’t sound too great so far? It can do more.
It also allows you to control the mouse and keyboard of the remote machine. You can then do anything with that machine that you could do if you were sat at it and using the keyboard and mouse attached to it.
This can save loads of time if you need to do something complicated...

DOS crash course.
Review of Everything that starts with D ... by
CyberChrist
Advantages: Lots of imformation, for you to use ! =)
Disadvantages: Sadly, most people dont use DOS anymore.
...be wondering what the point would be in learning DOS, but incase your computer crashes badly or some problems arise before windows starts, then you will be happy that you read this tutorial (currently the DOS commands to repair and format a computer will be in another tutorial !).
********
STARTING DOS
********
DOS is rather simple to start. Either you go to the "start" button, click then "run" and type in *command* or *command.com* otherwise you can, before turning off the computer (in the shut down screen), click restart in DOS. You can also try hitting f8, when the pc starts, before Windows becomes activated.
As you might have noticed, DOS needs commands to run anything. As DOS opens, you will see a black screen, with these words, or something similar :
C:\WINDOWS\Desktop>
This screen is where we type our commands and see our...

IBM X236 tower / rack server
Review of IBM eServer xSeries 236 8841 - Xeon 3 GHz by
goosey2
Advantages: Very versatile mid range server
Disadvantages: support web site can be awkward to navigate
...I started building these when they were X232's,they were good then and are still good now. They work equally well as an SMB domain controller, larger corporate BDC/SQL server or mid use terminal server. I currently support a pair of them using round robin DNS supporting some 100 TS users using office docs, outlook and an accounts package.
As you can see from the picture they are a tower unit but you can buy, for about £250 a rack conversion kit. The kit includes a new facia, metal case and rails. Once converted the rails will fit into most SERVER cabinets. This server will not go into a standard 600 wide data cabinet because you tend to find that the doors on the data cabinets hinge in such a way as to stop the server sliding out on its rails unless you remove the door. Secondly the cabinet should be at least 900mm deep...

MY VIEW ON WINDOWS NT SERVER v4.0
Review of Windows NT Server - Sybex Books by
TomSmith
Advantages: VERY GOOD SERVER SOFTWARE AND RELIABLE
Disadvantages: A BIT OUT OF DATE BUT HEY IT WORKS
...Windows NT Server v4.0 was the first Server OS I ever used and I must say its capabilities were amazing. It was easy to install and with the Service Pack 6a Which allowed a 60Gb Hard drive. I'm not going to tell the min spec as it is low but tell you the features that I have found.
The first server OS I tried on my new network at work was 2000 Server but the 2000 workstations wouldnt work as the cashed credentials were causing a problem. I was under pressure and my only option was to try the microsoft knowledge base. It gave me a solution but it didnt work. I know very unusual. So i put on NT 4 Server and they worked. I find that the user manager is better than 2000 as you can select a differnet logon script and user profile, etc all atb once wheras on 2000 you have to do them seperatley. The server manager was good to as i could use...

Licence to Kill
Review of BBC - TV Licence by
Wayne10ch
Advantages: BBC Choice keeps my youngest two amused! Plus hundreds of others!
Disadvantages: £109 fee!
...Writing about the BBC’s television licence fee was the last thing that I ever thought I would do! It was only when I read a very negative opinion that just slagged off paying the licence at all, without giving me any real information, that I even thought to myself about where my money went.
The BBC Licence fee started on November 1st 1922 and cost 10 shillings (50pence). At the moment it stands at £109, which works out to 29.86 pence a day over the course of a year. Not a bad amount when you think of it and puts £2.4 billion pounds into their coffers. The license fee went up last time in order that the BBC could strengthen their programmes and update their digital technology!
I haven’t noticed any really good programmes appearing on TV, but I do spend a lot of time watching Sky so perhaps I am missing something! I suppose...

Reliable and functional but without the price
Review of Supermicro SuperServer 7043M-6 - no CPU by
andycharger
Advantages: Cheap, reliable, functional.
Disadvantages: Heavy. Takes a long time to start.
...Supermicro....Hmmm....Sounds a bit like "budgetpc" to my ears. After years of being a Dell corporate monkey at my old company it was with some trepidation that I arrived to see 2 beige beasts sitting in my server room.
Because these were not Dell. No No. They were not IBM either....They were SUPERMICRO???
Alarm bells rang immediately. We all know we can buy ourselves a new unbranded PC and build it ourselves and still have change for the bus home but that is for Desktop PC's. You are taking a big risk when you scrimp on Server equipment as it needs to be Ultra reliable. Reason being? Well, it will probably be on 24/7. It will probably carry out all of your business critical data. If your Desktop blows up, you buy a new one. If you server blows up???Well, first you start crying and then contemplate the hell like task of sourcing...
