Another super novel from Donna Hay
Review of Some Kind of Hero - Donna Hay by
mummy2harry
Advantages: Great characters, compelling story, well explored relationships, realistic
Disadvantages: None
...I am now a real fan of Donna Hay's book and when I saw this one in a charity shop for the bargain price of 50 pence, I decided I would grab it and have a go. I have loved the 2 previous Donna Hay books I have read so I expected that I would like this one too, and luckily for me, Hay did not disappoint, with her realistic and fun story-telling style!
A quick bit about the author for those of you who haven't heard of her, and I am sure there are a few of you! Donna Hay is the author of 7 books, and Some Kind Of Hero is her 4th book. She has won critical acclaim for most of her novels, and her debut novel called Waiting In The Wings won the Romantic Novelists Association's New Writer of the Year award.
Ok, now back to this novel. Some Kind of Hero follows the lives of 2 people living in the same town, and living very similar lives...

A disappointing Swan-Song!
Review of This Is Your Song, Lola Rose - Donna Hay by
mummy2harry
Advantages: Plot was quite good
Disadvantages: Poor characters, dragged on, left me feeling cold at the end
...Usually, I begrudge spending £7 or £8 on a new book, partly because I can't afford that, and secondly I tend to get a lot of my books from charity shops now for just £1 each! However, I will make an exception for certain authors, and Donna Hay is one of those. I've loved all of her previous novels, and have recently read most of her back catalogue. So I excitedly ordered this from Amazon and set to reading it as soon as it had arrived.... sadly it was a real disappointment for me, and I was so looking forward to it as well!
This Is Your Song, Lola Rose follows the character of Lola, a young policewoman living a lonely life. Her mother died when she was young, and she's just buried her father, although she won't be missing him all that much. But Lola gets a shock when her evil aunts reveal a secret to her - that Eddie wasn't her...

Didn't wait long to finish this one
Review of Waiting in the Wings - Donna Hay by
mummy2harry
Advantages: Nice romantic novel, good characters, well written
Disadvantages: Ended a bit abruptly
...I was a bit stuck for authors to try, so I asked my mum to recommend me something I would not normally read to try. She told me that she loves Donna Hay, an Irish author I had never heard of, so I set about getting hold of one of her books. I didn't know which of her novels came first, but I actually chose this one, which coincidentally was Hay's debut novel. It is called "Waiting In The Wings" and was a lovely read from start to finish.
The story follows one woman, Annie Mitchell. Annie's husband has just walked out on her to live with her best friend, probably the ultimate betrayal and Annie isn't taking it too well. Her agent is trying to get her to go back to work as an actress, but Annie is happier sitting on the sofa stuffing Coco Pops until Max comes home, which she is convinced that he will. But Julia manages to find a job...

SOAPY BUBBLES AND LOADSA TROUBLE!
Review of Kiss and Tell - Donna Hay by
Pmshack99
Advantages: interesting, entertaining, well written and informative
Disadvantages: none at all!
...INTRODUCTION
Being the huge chick-lit fan that I am, I often feel like I've exhausted the list of chick-lit authors out there, and am constantly waiting on tenterhooks for their next books to be published - or even written. But every so often, I will find a fantastic author just by chance - and it will turn out that they have a neat little back catalogue already, just waiting for me to buy them and devour them. I love it when this happens - its a nice little discovery.
And Donna Hay is one of these discoveries. When I originally read "Kiss and Tell" a few years ago now, I was delighted to find that she not only had published a novel prior to that one, she already had one or two other books on the market! Yes, I thought, another chick lit author to add to my list of faves. And believe me, she's well worth a place on that list...

A thoroughly entertaining read!
Review of Some Kind of Hero - Donna Hay by
kingfisher111
Advantages: good story, convincing characters
Disadvantages: none
...This was the first book I had read by Donna Hay, although I had heard of her book 'Goodbye Ruby Tuesday' and knew that that had some good write ups. 'Some Kind of Hero' was a good introduction to this author and I thoroughly enjoyed the book.
Generally I would say that it is quite a light read although it does deal with some more difficult issues such as the loss of a parent, and how children deal with this. It also shows how parents, particularly in difficult circumstances, allow themselves to be manipuleted by their children.
The main character in this book is Tess Doyle. She is a single mother, abandoned by her son's father before he is born. Dan, her son, was also born with an illness which has consigned him to a wheelchair. Therefore, pretty early on in the book you realise that life has been no bed of roses for Tess! However...

Here's to you Mrs Robinson...
Review of The Two Mrs Robinsons - Donna Hay by
mummy2harry
Advantages: So well-written, absorbing, well developed characters, FANTASTIC!
Disadvantages: Nothing
...My mum actually lent me this book after she found out that I had read Donna Hay's debut novel and loved it. Well she told me that this was a hundred times better than that one, and I would love this one, so I thought it was well worth a go! And yes, my good old mum was completely right, I loved this, and read the whole thing in a matter of days, I could hardly put it down!
The book itself is called The Two Mrs Robinsons, which kind of gives you a hint in itself as to what the book is going to be about. The story follows two women, Eve and Anna who are both in love with one man, Oliver Robinson. Now here is the snag. Eve has 2 children with him, Matt and Georgina, and has been married to Oliver for 20 odd years. But then Oliver left her and her children to be with Anna, who he now has a 3 year old son with. So Mr Robinson has been...

Hot stuff from Donna Summer!
Review of Journey, The (The Very Best Of Donna Summer) - Donna Summer by
Mel27
Advantages: Good mix of tunes
Disadvantages: Not enough modern material
...Donna Summer has had mixed fortunes over the years, mainly thanks to some alleged homophobic comments Summer was supposed to have made during the mid-1980s when AIDS was first being properly recognised.
However, the music has to be priority and this is a good collection of songs. The main styles are disco and pop. Here's a track-listing.
1. Love To Love You Baby (Single Version)
2. Could It Be Magic (Single Version)
3. I Feel Love (Edit)
4. Theme From The Deep (Down Deep Inside)
5. Love's Unkind
6. I Love You (Single Version)
7. Last Dance (Single Version)
8. MacArthur Park (Single Version)
9. Heaven Knows

11. Hot Stuff (Single Version)

Hays Montrose - Best of the British
Review of Hays by
3min_man
Advantages: Service, Pay and Dirverse range of work
Disadvantages: They are still an agency which can sometimes make errors
...Hays known more widely as Hays Montrose are another recruiting agency of the many available although Hays are possibly the biggest as they are working internationally and are currently extremely diverse.
Hays Montrose – Background :
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Formed in the 60’s and then expanding to a more diverse workforce in the 80’s, Hays have been round for such a long time which goes to show they are successful. In the mid 90’s, I was out bopping away to my old skool love while Hays were expanding across the country and the world.
Hays are now recognized as a global working company recruiting thousands across the UK as well as the many others working throughout countries such as France, Germany, Sweden, Portugal and South Africa included.
But more importantly the UK coverage is outstanding, with 220 offices...

Make Hay Whilst The Sun Shines..
Review of Hay-on-Wye (Wales) by
Zaphoid
Advantages: Books Food Festival
Disadvantages: Parking when festival is on
...The town and its book shops.
The town of Hay-on -Wye nestles in the lush rolling hills on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park in Powys, Wales. It is a picturesque hamlet which boasts almost 39 book shops some of which seem to have been created by the same group of Time Lords who built the Tardis, as you enter these deceptive establishments you will be surprised at the relative imbalance between the outward appearance and the volume of the interior and even more surprised at the number of books in stock. Some call Hay the second hand book capital of the world and indeed the range and number of books I have seen on a number of visits has yet to be surpassed. Book prices range between several hundred pounds and as little as 10 pence. Traditional bookshops abound but there are also the oddities, like the outdoor honesty book shop...
