Reviews of dvd 1930
Worthy of the DVD player of the year award (2006)
Review of Denon DVD-1930 by
thewedge
Advantages: Good picture quality
Disadvantages: Flimsey remote
...I've just picked up one of these as I've had a 42" Samsung HD TV for a while now and thought it was time for my old DVD player to be upgarded to HDMI to take advantage of it.
All I can say is WOW! The picture quality from this DVD player is absolutely fantastic and I'm now thinking I should have bought one a while ago. The images produced compared to my old NAD DVD player are crisp, vibrant and full of 'life'.
Hooking it up was a quick and painless affair - unplug old DVD, insert new one and put all connectors in the back, HD cable to the TV and voila, it's up and running.
The remote is a bit flimsey but in all honesty I can live with that because the image quality from the player more than makes up for it. The buttons are well spaced allowing easy pressing without hitting the one alongside. I have a Sony DVD player...

1930 meet Mr William Skakespeare
Review of Love's Labours Lost DVD by
sarahbethy
Advantages: It's funny, good to look at, enjoyable and fun!
Disadvantages: I don't know how acurate it is and if you hate musicals i wouldn't bother watching it.
...I have to admit, i didn't buy this DVD, I won it but after watching it for the first time i think i would have bought it anyway.
~ Plot ~
The story evolves around the king and his three friends, who take a vow of no women, booze and little food for three years in order to concentrate on their studies. Then who happens to show up, a French Princess and her three friends (Yes, just so happens that there are equal numbers) and all of the vows go out of the window! Of course, it being a Shakespeare play, there's lots of disguises, trickery and a funny sublet to comment on the main story line but you might just be a little bit shocked when the characters start to sing and dance. Yes, that's right folks, Kenneth's turned it into a musical.
~ Music and Dance ~
The play is set in the glitz and glamour of the 1930's...

Excellent DVD for a cricket fan
Review of Century Of Cricket DVD by
mitchell91
Advantages: Lots of footage, Features some amazing shots bowls and catches
Disadvantages: A lot of black and white footage
...A Century of Cricket is probably the best DVD I have purchased for under £5.Presented by David Gower, it features some of Crickets greatest players such as: Sir Donald Bradman, Viv Anderson, W B Grace, Brian Lara and Shane Warne.
The DVD lasts in total for about two hours. As expected from the title the footage begins in the early 1900's, where limited footage of early cricket is shown.
Some bonus features of the DVD include: Full One Day International Records; Full Test Cricket Records; Comprehensive First Class Records; Profiles On Top 40 Cricketers Of All Time; Special Section On Top 5 Greatest Ever Players. Also includes footage of Gloustershire's four consecutive one day trophy wins.
If I was asked what my favourite section of the DVD was then I would probably say the ashes footage form the 1930's. Seeing Don Bradman...

Everton 3 Bayern Munich 1 - 1985 - DVD Review
Review of Everton - Everton vs Bayern Munich DVD by
newty1977
Advantages: Re live a glorious European semi-final from the 80's
Disadvantages: It makes you sad we aren't this good anymore!
..., British Championship winners & British Club Champions, as well as the European Cup Winners' Cup title added in 1985. The clubs most successful eras have been the 1930's, 60's and 80's, the latter two being largely dominated by the club.
I was fortunate enough to grow up during one of the clubs most successful era's, the only negative being that I have had to endure over 20 years of dross and sadness since, as the club have declined and are quite possibly playing the worst football in the 125+ year history .... great !!
Anyway, this DVD is a great way to re-live one of Everton's past glories, with many of the players involved from the era sighting this particular game as their greatest moment in an Everton shirt. As the DVD blurb points out ... "Managers and players will tell you that winning a Semi-Final of any competition can be more...

Homefront DVD in Colour. World War 2 In Colour
Review of World War II In Colour - Homefront DVD by
Martinscholes
Advantages: Interesting to see colour footage
Disadvantages: None, really
...This DVD is part of the History Channel World War II in Colour. It is the story (shown in colour) of how the people of the USA and Britain coped on the homefront, whilst the service personnel of both countries were away fighting against the Axis countries in what must have seemed like the four corners of the globe.
The Atlantic, the Pacific, Northern Europe, Southern Europe, Africa, the Middle East, the far East, Australasia, and so forth.
The first chapter of the DVD is entitled "making do."
Because the programme was created for the American audience, it begins not at the start of the homefront in Britain, but with the homefront in America, which was basically created only when Pearl Harbour was attacked by the Japanese. Suddenly, America new what it was like to face a relentless enemy who seemed implacable and incapable...

The doggies dangelies
Review of Denon DVD-1930 by
yiddoboy
Advantages: Does everything you could ever ask for
Disadvantages: feels a little cheap for the price and the remote is awful
...I needed a dvd/sacd player and as Sony have quit the field went to my local Hifi specialist looking to purchase a pioneer 636 (which had superb reviews) or something as good at a simular price. My dealer said ok whilst the pioneer is good would you be open to something better? I'm always swayed by a good demo. and having popped back fifteen minutes later once the pioneer, this and it's big brother were set up. A quick burst of Pink Floyd from the live8 gig and the lobby scene from the matrix (Scarey how the salesman could read me so well) quickly had me sold up although had my bank account permitted me I would have spent four times as much money. The picture was very crisp through their 42" Pioneer Plasma, the sound through their Marantz SR7500 and B&W speaker system blew me away. I parted with my hard earned cash and took it home...

The Funniest Horror, Ever
Review of Young Frankenstein DVD by
Mauri
Advantages: Very Funny
Disadvantages: Average Special Features
...Goldman…Medical Student
For this film Brooks once again makes use of his favourite star Gene Wilder who on this occasion is also credited as co-writer. The plot itself has little or nothing to do with the original Mary Shelley book but it owes much to the Universal Studios 1930 film version directed by James Whale.
Gene Wilder is Dr Frederik Frankestein an eminent neuro surgeon and the grandson of the infamous Baron Victor von Frankenstein. After he is brought his grandfathers diary he decides to travel to the family castle in Transylvania to see for himself his inheritance and to try and discover some of his Grandfathers research secrets. On arriving he meets Igor the hunchback who is also the grandson of the original Igor the faithful assistant to the Baron and Frau Blucher the sinister housekeeper. It soon becomes apparent...

The Legendary Girl Detective In Four Classic Films
Review of Nancy Drew: The Original Mystery Collection (DVD) by
eve6kicksass
Advantages: Granville's oustanding performance as Ms. Drew; great fun to watch
Disadvantages: Quite dated, with obsolete dialogue and mannerisms
...released on DVD for the first time last week by Warner Bros., though it was only on Region 1 format. In addition, there is no indication that it will be released on Region 2 format soon to take advantage of the new film’s release in the UK in August. However, the good news is that you can obtain the films easily on bootlegs from Ebay; plus, keep an eye out on Turner Classic Movies for them, because they will no doubt play them within the next six weeks. Bear in mind, that is the Nancy Drew of the 1930s, not of the present day so many of the references will no doubt be bizarre to the modern audience, though for anyone that is (or was) an avid reader of the books, I promise that you all will be generously rewarded. Good luck in obtaining these classic B films; the Region 1 DVD is available to order from Amazon for 13 GBP, and the ASIN is B000...

INTRODUCTION: HARDY BOYS HISTORY 101
******************************************************************
As you can guess by now, I’m celebrating the return of Nancy Drew to the screen this week, and I started by posting a review on Monday on the four classic Nancy Drew B-films which came out in the late 1930s. Today, I shall be telling you all about Season One of the Nancy Drew & Hardy Boys Mysteries which debuted on television in 1977. To be honest with all of you, I prefer Drew to the Hardy’s, though I did read several books on the brother duo, which would go out and solve mysteries as a team. Contrary to popular belief, the Hardy Boys did not debut the same...
