When Is a DVD Player Not Just a DVD Player
Review of DIK DVD 339 by
coldzero
Advantages: Plays DivX Xvid , supports DVDr
Disadvantages: older files may not play, Not all DVDr media Guaranteed
...A short note before I start this op, I may get a bit technical during this op, unfortunately its unavoidable with a unit like this , I will do my best to explain everything in detail and provide a review that will have something for the layman and the geek .
DK DivX DVD-339 is one of a new generation of standalone DVD players, it will do everything you expect from a DVD player and if you already have a standalone DVD player and you only intend to play shop bought DVD’s on it then this unit is not for you. The beauty and main selling point of this unit is its ability to be able to play DivX, Xvid and Mpeg4 files from any CDr and DVDr (They do not guarantee support for DVDr because there are so many different types of branded media and burning options, more on that later in op).
‘DK Digital’ makers of this unit are a German...

Hi DVD, Bye VHS, RIP Betamax
Review of Member Advice on DVD Players by
oblivious0r
Advantages: High Quality Picture, Audio, Special Features
Disadvantages: New Technology On The Way
...Since around 1998 a new digital format has occured into our every day lives which has changed the way we watch our films, tv shows and games. It is the DVD which has pushed aside the VCR to the attic. In the 1980s Sony and Philips launched the ever familiar compact disc format which was one of the first digital formats available. As time went on the cd expanded from a music media format to vcd, games, and cd roms. CD's can hold upto 700mb approximately which is around 155 mp3s. As time went on technology advanced and as more people bought computers people required a format for large removeable storage as opposed to a 3.5mb floppy disc. Then around the mid 90s more and more cd rewriter drives were released.
In 1995 the DVD was created by Sony and 9 other companies, hitachi, jvc, matsushita,philips, pioneer, thomson, time warner...

Tips and Hints of buying a DVD film
Review of DVD - the Future? by
pakalang
Advantages: hmm, read op..
Disadvantages: hopefully none, maybe too long?
...Let's get digital, shall we?
First of all, I wrote this straight from the back of my mind, no construction on Word or anything similar to that. Since I haven't written for sometimes now because of exams (phew, thank god it's over! it's a nightmare!), I just hope that my opinion's quality does not deteriorate (can't even pronounce this!) that much. I also didn't know where to put this opinion in, but I leave that to our highly-dedicated ciao-team to figure it out (some ass kissing there in order to increase my CMW chances!) NOT!! Just kidding :)
Now let's get down to business. I'll try to make this guide as 'unjargon' as possible. Hmmm, where should I start? Why don't we start with the basics:
Introduction to DVD
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What's a DVD? You'd be surprised at how hard it is to tell the difference between a DVD...
Harman Kardon DVD22 Multi Region DVD Player
Review of Harman Kardon harman/kardon DVD 22 by
sjp1966
Advantages: looks fantastic, beautiful picture (depending on connection),
Disadvantages: expensive, reliability problems with brand
...Having owned a Harman Kardon DVD22 since June 2005 I think that I am well placed to write a review on the unit; but before I talk about the DVD22 I feel that I must give a little background and therefore must go back 1 year, when I had the DVD21 (by the same company). I bought the DVD21 as an ex-demo model in-store for £150.00, within 6 months I had returned the unit as it was making excessive noise when playing disks, the shop that I purchased from took the unit back and it went away for repair, when I received the unit back, the only thing that was left of the unit I purchased was the case, all the innards had been replaced, essentially it was an old case with a brand new interior. That unit lasted another 6 months before going wrong, this time the company swapped it out for the newer DVD22 (although I had to pay another £100).
So...
DVD Player that can play DivX .avi files and more!
Review of DK Digital DVD-500 DivX DVD player by
Deru
Advantages: Plays DivX AVI and MPEG files, Supports lots of formats, Looks good, Karaoke,
Disadvantages: DivX 3.11, 4.02 plays slightly slanted, cheap plasticy remote, Doesn't play some NTSC encoded files
...I've wanted a DVD player that was capable of playing DivX files for a while because of all my anime and por...errr....other video files..., but the players cost more than normal DVD players so resisted for a while. I've seen brands such as KISS and Yamada but later came across this DK Digital DVD-500 DivX DVD player after the prices have dropped. It only cost £41.98 (61.52 Euros) from SVP Communications (AKA Blank Disc Shop).
-= The Player =-
The player looks sleek with a black and silver design. Black at the front with silver at the top and bottom curving in towards each other at the middle, which I think looks really good. The player itself looks quite durable and the tray isn't flimsy like some I've seen. The LCD display shows the numbers in green and other details such as TRK, DVD, etc in red. I think it's very easy to read...
DVD's a Plenty!!!
Review of Woolworths DVD Player by
newby2
Advantages: cheap, compact, great bargain
Disadvantages: none
...Woolworth’s Worth It DVD Player
Well having completely given up on our Liteon DVD recorder which cost us a fair bit of money but was totally useless at recording anything let alone simply playing a DVD with ease we decided to get a new DVD player.
It is usually me that buys these sorts of things and then I have to get my boyfriend to give me half the money. He doesn’t often like spending money without a lot of thought so we end up never really getting anything when he does the shopping!! However imagine my surprise when he walks through the front door holding a Woolworth’s bag containing a brand new DVD player, I really couldn’t believe my eyes!
This DVD player from Woolworth’s only cost £19.99 pence and that I think is a total bargain. Looking in the Argos catalogue the cheaper ones in the book pretty much start...
Create your own DVD, as easy as One, Two, Three
Review of TMPGEnc DVD Author 1.5 by
sandemp
Advantages: Easy DVD creation | Built in burning engine | Can use files from DVD recorders (VR)
Disadvantages: No motion menus | Need to encode AVIs before using
...Having a DVD recorder has many advantages, including being able to compile my own discs from various TV series. Although I could use the menus that come on my recorder, I find them a little boring, especially the ones from my Panasonic recorder which are completely text based. So the question facing me was how could I create my own DVD menus, and yet still keep the quality of the recordings. An added complication, was that I would record these programs on DVD-RAM discs that use a special kind of recording format called VR.
After a little research on the internet I found a DVD Authoring program that fitted my needs perfectly, not only could it extract separate programs from a DVD-RAM disc, but it could do the same with any non-copy write protected DVD and even create DVD file systems from films that I had previously encoded...
Knocks the socks off any other DVD drive
Review of Pioneer DVD 106S by
Kevin_Pritchard
Advantages: Fast, reliable.
Disadvantages: None
...The new DVD-106S remedies the DAE problems the DVD-105S had by upping the rated speed to 16x CLV. It's also the one of the first drives that features an UDMA 66 interface. So has Pioneer improved upon an already impressive drive?
The DVD-106S is an OEM version so the drive I gotso it was just the bare drive and the instructions. While Pioneer does have a retail version of the drive, the DVD-A06S, I have no idea if Pioneer North America plans on selling it at this time.
Physical Features:
-----------------
Thankfully, there is a firmare release available for this drive that allows multi-region. Do this at your own risk! Pioneer is the master of the slot drive. The slot drive's appearance hasn't changed a lot over the past few years. The DVD-106S is no exception.
Along with the obvious slot, the drive features from the left...
DVD on the PC
Review of PowerDVD 3.0 Complete package by
real_rob_writer
Advantages: Good
Disadvantages: Expensive
...My new PC came with a DVD drive, but little did I realise I would need a program to watch DVD’s!
I have never used another DVD watching program in my life, because I haven't had the need, so I better say that I can't recommend this over any of the other DVD players out there. I can recommend it as a good product, but maybe, just maybe, there is another DVD viewer out there that is even better!
So what does PowerDVD do exactly?
First if all the simple explanation. You take a DVD movie from those oh so slick new cases (better than a chunky tape anyway). Press the button to open the DVD drawer, insert the shiny gold DVD and close the drawer! Now is where PowerDVD kicks in. By some clever inside-the-computer jiggery pokery Windows realises that your shiny disc is not a CD but a DVD, and even better it knows it's a DVD movie...
SAMSUNG DVD-HD950? I DON'T THINK SO!!!
Review of Samsung DVD-HD950 by
Georgios4u
Advantages: Slim Design....HDMI Ability.....Solid Compatibility
Disadvantages: Poor Poor Picture Quality
...THE STORY
After purchasing a new LCD TV I felt I should also buy a new high quality and worth of money DVD player since my previous one was already 5 years old. Bearing that in mind I started an extensive market research for the best possible product that could fulfil my desires but at the same time to be a really good bargain. Mostly, my research included: visits to retailers and online research. After reading as many possible reviews I decided to buy the HD950 DVD PLAYER by SAMSUNG. I feel the need to tell you now at the beginning of my review, that the reviews I read before buying the product were at their most "professional" reviews written by the manufacturers of the product. Perhaps this was the biggest mistake I've made during the whole market research process, for the simple reason that I never thought to advise people who...
