A Decent Game
Review of StarTrek: Generations (PC) by
lukerussell
Advantages: Very good Graphics and sound
Disadvantages: Difficult and sometimes boring
...This game is based on the movie of the same name and is a reasonably good game. It features all the Next Generation cast and at some point in the game you will get to be each one of the main Enterprise crew members. It is a strange mix of a game featuring many Doom Style Shoot'em up Awaymissions combined with space battles with you at the Helm of the Enterprise battling Klingons, Romulans and anyone else who wants to have a go. The plot basically follows that of the film and although not essential it does help to have seen the film. I found the game to be quite good but at the same time it was sometimes boring and even worse at times it was very difficult. This is a challenging game with many different game styles mixed in which is unusual in the industry but what we have come to expect fromn Star Trek games. I would only recommend...

Review of Java Enterprise in a Nutshell by
andy-T
Advantages: Very good introduction / reference
Disadvantages: Lacks examples
...most books to be the same.
As with Java in a Nutshell though, those kind people at O’Reilly have put every example from every Java book on the website, so you can get the examples from the O'Reilly Java 2D book as well as the Java Examples in a Nutshell and work out what’s going on and how it’s done. See http://java.oreilly.com/ for details.

Both by David Flanagan.
See my review of Java in a Nutshell for comments on the Java Enterprise CD Bookshelf.
To round off, I found this one to be a very useful introduction to the technologies and how they can be integrated in an enterprise environment. I would definitely recommend it as an introduction/reference. To be at the stage where you could create and deploy your own EJB-based solution, a lot...

breaking the mould
Review of BBC2 - Star Trek: Deep Space Nine by
robjlawler
Advantages: Good characters and plots
Disadvantages: It is on at 6pm which isnt very convienent for lots of people
...This series is the third series in the star trek franchise, and this time it changes and breaks the mould, it is no longer a new or different starship enterprise in fact it is not even set aboard starship, it is set aborad the space station Deep Space Nine hence the title Star Trek Deep Space Nine. This means that the story has to be more character based many times as the station does not move through space so the same people are there all the time. This was solved by the makes mind in the third season of the show when the space station was given a starship to use as well, this allowed for more exploration based shows. This is my favourite series out of the four different types of star treks, and is by far the best. I suggest that everyone should watch this and bbc should put it on at a more prime time slot like sky who put...

Ressistance is Futile
Review of Star Trek - First Contact DVD by
carolinesite
Advantages: The best Star Trek film to date with exciting effects and an exciting enemy.
Disadvantages: Will be very hard to follow up as has been proved with Insurrection.
...I would not say that I was a ‘Trekkie’ but I did like to watch the series when I was a kid.
As the newer generations were brought to our screens, Generations, Voyager and Deep Space Nine, I have become interested in watching these new series, based on Gene Roddenberry’s original ideas.
First Contact is the best Star Trek film ever made (in my opinion). It features the Borg.
The most feared enemy of all species has to be the Borg. Half organic and half cybernetic they travel around the galaxy assimilating any species that they come across to add them to their collective. The Borg are many but have the mind of one. They do not attack unless threatened and have the ability to adapt to the on-fire of most space weapons.
They travel using a huge cube-like ship and their one goal is to assimilate all other species...

Supporting new writing
Review of Oriana Publications by
richardashdowne
Advantages: Opportunities realised
Disadvantages: None
...This is a company which has set out specifically to encourage and support new composers in a wide range of genres. Based in South Wales, many of its existing composers come from the area, but it has a constantly growing catalogue. Because of its online presence, it is accessible to a wider range of people who might be interested in the quality music that it publishes. Moreover, given the very reasonable prices, the sheet music and hire scores are not out of the range of amateur groups. This kind of business is one which is much to be recommended. The limited opportunities available for new writers to reach a wider audience and to thus be able to support themselves mean that such an enterprise is both highly welcome and extremely important. What's more, it will survive on the basis of the quality of its work, and that is particularly...

Battered and Bruised
Review of Ice Hockey - General by
harken
Advantages: Guarranteed Profit, Untapped Entertainment
Disadvantages: No one prepared to take the chance!!!
...I agree with what you are saying,I'm a regular Ice Hockey Supporter unfortunatly the team I support play in an arena that is used only for the teams use. The fan base is such that if some enterprising Individual or company where to build an Ice Arena near here they would make a killing ,but no such luck, the local talent have to play the inline game rather than that of there heroes. It seems strange that if any of our future stars want to have a crack at the big-time then there better off playing abroad.
This is a FANtastic game that shows real skill when played correctly. WHY CAN'T SOMEONE SEE THE TALENT AND THE 'BUCKS' AVAILABLE IF THEY ONLY TAKE THE CHANCE and build the ARENA'S that are crying out to be used....

Having hope for the past
Review of Sky 1: Star Trek - Enterprise by
Psychgirl
Advantages: Getting better
Disadvantages: Terrible theme tune
...Before I give you my opinion of Star Trek Enterprise you need to know what kind of Star Trek fan I am. I don't mean simply that I don't sleep in trekkie pyjamas and wouldn't be seen dead with a kipper nailed to my forehead (or a herring bone on my nose for that matter). I mean what my taste in Star Trek is. Take it for granted that I loved the original series from whence this all sprung - especially the ground breaking episodes like the first inter-racial kiss on tv. I enjoyed The Next Generation, and DS9 is my favourite. The less said about Voyager the better.
So any Star Trek fan will know where I am coming from. For the non-initiated I will add, I love story lines that challenge the established order, that rail against a simple good/evil philosophy and that have developing story arcs, and developing, flawed characters.
My first...

"AFTER ALL NUMBER ONE, WE'RE ONLY HUMAN"
Review of Star Trek - Generations DVD by
alan74
Advantages: Some Great Special Effects, Strong Performance From Stewart, Great Special Features.
Disadvantages: Not An Ending All Trek Fans Will Like.
...At the time, this was the movie every ‘Trek’ fan had been waiting for… So was it worth waiting for?
THE MOVIE:
(Warning! If you have not seen the film yet, some of the following may spoil your viewing)!
The movie starts with a nice shot of a 2265 champagne bottle flying through space, as it does; it breaks on the side of the Starship USS Enterprise ‘B’ whilst in space dock, ready for its maiden voyage, just to Pluto and back. All the media are there, and it’s being sent off by the one and only James T Kirk, (William Shatner), and not forgetting, Chekov, (Walter Koenig), and Scotty, (James Doohan). (All now retired).
Captain Harriman, (Alan Ruck), makes an announcement to the media and invites Kirk to send the Enterprise on her way, with a little persuasion he does. Seconds later the Enterprise receive a distress call from...

Life before Kirk
Review of Sky 1: Star Trek - Enterprise by
Mauri
Advantages: Still good characters and stories
Disadvantages: The music
...Captain's Log* Stardate2151*. This is Capt. Jonathon Archer of the Starship Enterprise, the most advanced starship ever built. Ever since the discovery of the warp drive by Zephram Cochran in2117 it has been our dream to explore the galaxy and meet new civilizations. Earth made first contact with the Vulcans, an advanced race of peaceful aliens who have since helped us in many ways although it seems at times that they have also hampered our developments in many areas to suit their own purposes.
Building a fully functional warp5 drive has not been possible until recently when my own father Prof. Ben Archer designed a prototype. Unfortunately he didn't live long enough to see it in action and again the Vulcans did not help matters by withholding vital technology from us. The Enterprise is the culmination of all his hard work and as well...

Cyberpunk takes an ugly turn
Review of Chaos Overlords (PC) by
digitalburn
Advantages: Quick to get into, great for multiplayer
Disadvantages: Soundtrack makes your ears bleed
...Chaos Overlords... hehe.
What shall I say?
A brief description: you take control of a criminal organisation in the far future. Your objective - to wipe out the competition and take control of a grid based city full of scum and mutants, terrorising the population as you go. Hire and equip gangs ranging from mutant kung-fu monks to disco freaks, from the Sewer Rats to the Bankers, and use them to take control of city sectors, cause chaos (and get money), attack rival overlords' gangs and 'influence' enterprises such as night clubs, casinos, research centres and condos. Not only does each gang have a unique combination of abilites, and therefore combat methods, but also it's own unique style, given by its brief critique and excellent artwork.
I recommend this game to anyone into turn based strategy. Not only is it atmospheric...
