Serious Scrabble players have huge tournaments and watching them play is very interesting as they have good tactics. For the rest of us its mainly one of those games that comes out at Christmas. ~~~~The Game~~~~ The concept is simple, each player blindly picks from a bag 7 letter tiles. The letter tiles are each given a point value (printed on the tile) depending on their ease of use, for example the letter E scores only 1 point whilst Z scores 10 points. ~~~~Playing~~~~ The first player must make a word in the centre of the board using their tiles. ...are more profound' The book is broken into 55 chapters covering a variety of concepts and categories from animal words to Latin terms, to words that describe people, words for odds and ends, coined words, words that spell checkers cannot cope with, medical words, "words that make one say 'I didn't know there was a word for that!"' positive words, words about words and many, many more besides. The book is not only highly informative, it I also highly entertaining, too. It would have been possible for Anu Garg to have used dry and academic example to prove his points or to illustrate the meaning of a difficult word. But, no! Garg employs humour to put over the meanings of hard or difficult words. For example chapter 38 is 'uncommon words with common suffixes' The first example we see is: oniomania. ...Hello people!! Just thought I'd give you guys something interesting to do...look below if you dare. I’ve done challenges for other people and desperately wanted to do one of my own, so here it is. Basically the idea is, I say a word and you have to say the first thing that comes into your head. Let's see how normal you lot are! I’ll give you an example. Say if I was doing this…and try to keep a straight face here when you read this, say if somebody said the word DUCK to me, I’d have to come up with the first thing that popped into my head. E.g. Word: DUCK Answer: Quack! ‘Quack’ would probably be my answer. It can be more that one word, whatever you like, just so long as it’s the first thing that pops into your head. " From the introduction to the book, I understand this book to have been carefully produced over a long period of time. Whenever Christopher Foyle ( Chairman of the world-famous Foyles bookshop in London's Charing Cross) came across a word that he found interesting he noted it down and carefully recorded it. ...I first played Wordox a few weeks ago having read the articles on this site and I simply have to add my own comments. The game is brilliant. It combines the lexical skills of Scrabble with the strategic know-how of Othello to provide an excellent and addictive game. The aim is to create words from the letters in your hand as in Scrabble within the allotted time limit but, at the same time, one is also trying to alter the colour of words already on the screen to your own by using the letters as part of your own word. This not only adds points to your score, it also takes points away from the opponent who created the original word. There are two main frustrations with this game.
