...Us British don't seem to be able to come up with good comedy films but one has got to be one of the best. The Full Monty starring Robert Carlyle, Mark Addy and Tom Wilkinson. Set in Sheffield the dole queue just doesn't seem to be getting any smaller following the closure of the steel works 6 months ago. Gaz (Carlyle) is totally fed up, having problems with his ex-wife Many over seeing his son Nate and being unemployed for a what seems like eternity things have got to get better. Dave (Addy) and his wife Jean are having problems in the bedroom compartment and Gerald (Wilkinson) just can't bring himself to tell his wife that he has been out of work for the last 6 months (she still sends him of with his packed lunch each day). ...Since 'Calendar Girls' is a British comedy about older people who strip down for cash, it draws the obvious comparison to 'The Full Monty' by American reviewers. Although both films take place in Yorkshire ('The Full Monty' happens in Jarvis Cocker’s hometown of Sheffield) and feature lovable and unique characters, 'Calendar Girls' falls short on substance. It’s amusing and heart-warming, but it won’t make you guffaw like 'The Full Monty' does. For one thing, the blokes in 'The Full Monty' are unemployed, while the 'Calendar Girls' are raising money for cancer. I’m not saying that being out of work is funny, but it certainly has more opportunity for hilarity than a devastating disease does. ...There's an old saying that seems quite apt at this point. "Stick with what you know". It's not that the makers of this movie haven't, the problem is that they did - and rigidly! From Peter Cattaneo, the director of 'The Full Monty', comes this knockabout tale of redemption, set in a prison and starring James Nesbitt (Cold Feet) as Jimmy (imaginative...), an in-and-out of prison failed armed robber. On his arrival, he rubs the typical sadistic prison warder up the wrong way (with a nicely understated gag revolving around his time in solitary), and ends up in front of the governor, played to hilarious effect by Christopher Plummer (The Sound Of Music, Don't Tell Mom The Babysitter's Dead). ...I had a brilliant evening in last night, transported back to 1997 and one of my favourite all time films - The Full Monty - which I have recently acquired on DVD. I don't suppose that there are many people who do not know a little about the storyline in The Full Monty. However, I will just give a brief synopsis. The story is set in Sheffield in the mid 90s. Once a thriving centre of the steel industry, now there is mass unemployment. The central character is Gary (played by Robert Carlyle) who is desperate to make a bit of money so he can pay the maintainance arrears for his son Nathan, and therefore carry on seeing him. Gary is always on the lookout for one scam or another, most of which don't get him anywhere, until he stumbles across the idea of male stripping! ...Together with Boogie Nights, The Full Monty is one of the 1997 fall schedule's entertaining looks at the world of adult entertainment. The differences here are, The Full Monty is thoroughly British and doesn't seek to be taken the least bit seriously. Director Peter Cattaneo and writer Simon Beaufoy bring us a look at the England town of Sheffield, where the lone factory has shut down, leaving most of its working class dogs unemployed and desperate. The ringleader of the desperate is Gaz (Robert Carlyle, not that "Butterfly Kisses" guy), who in the movie's opening scene convinces his best friend Dave (Mark Addy) and his young son to sneak into the closed factory with him and steal some steel (or steel some steal) girders. In fact, I'm a dreaded 'white-van-man' by day so I don't really *need* a car or rely on one to get me to work and stuff so when I DO buy a car, it's as a weekend plaything, a toy, not as an essential means of transportation. It’s the 1997 movie “The Full Monty”, from director Peter Cattaneo, about the hair brained scheme thought up by an out of work and down on his luck working class lad from Sheffield in Yorkshire, in order to change both his life and fortune. ~ ~ The opening scene is one of the most unusual I have ever seen in a commercial movie, and is both funny and poignant at the same time.
