Sex, Jokes, and Don Giovanni!
Review of Mozart: Don Giovanni by
insight2005
Advantages: A nice relaxing album
Disadvantages: Needs an aquired taste
...1). CD Infomation:
(a) - 3 CDS (72 tracks)
(b) - Accompanying book (204 pages, commentary and background information in Italian, German, French and English)
(c) - Language of opera - Italian
(d) - Total running time, 161' 28"
2). Background to the Opera:
Don Giovanni was one of Mozarts greatest opears, and as a result is one of the most popularfor all those who have a taste for the delights opera provides. Don Giovanni is all about an Italian Nobleman, Don Giovanni, who is a great womaniser. Consequently, Don Giovanni, has been remarked as a "light-hearted sexual promiscuity".
Life for Don Giovanni is fine (a minimum of 6 girls a night!), however, after he rapes Donna Anna, and murders her father (the Commendatore) , after he challenges him to a duel once he discovers Don Giovanni at his game! From that point, Don...

Giovanni smooth as silk conditioner.
Review of Giovanni Smooth as Silk Conditioner by
wondyful
Advantages: Every eco-friendly. 100% organic ingredients. Ver nourishing and cheap!
Disadvantages: Hard to buy
...Giovanni is a range of products that are not tested on animals at all. The contain no animal-derived by-products and are 100% organic.
I stumbled by these products when I was ordering some herbs from mountainroseherbs.com and the price stunned me. It was only about $8, which is about £4 in UK currency and I was just so pleased with myself because it is 100% organic and so cheap. Whereas I could splash out on £10 on a bottle of conditioner and there's a whole list of perservatives, chemicals which will eventually damage my hair.
The pakaging is very nice. In a clear plastic bottle (which is biodegradeable i.e you just leave it and eventually it will decomposed naturally). Not a lot of pictures just their company logo and simple writing. Very sophiscated. Comes in a 250ml bottle, that's 8.5fl.oz.
As it's 100% organic I will just...

Sticky Fingers
Review of San Giovanni Rotondo, Italy by
MALU
Advantages: a very special destination
Disadvantages: may not appeal to everyone
...821 saints. According to a Catholic site the making of saints started in the 10th century, during the Middle Ages 96 people were made saints, from 1588 up to today 725, for 478 (!) of those the current Pope, John Paul II, is responsible.
When we were on our school exchange visit to Foggia (move from Naples to the east across the Italian peninsula and you´ll find the town near the coast) this year in April we decided to visit San Giovanni Rotondo, the place where Padre Pio (1887 - 1968) lived and worked as a Capuchin priest nearly his whole life to get to the heart of the matter so to speak, to experience something endemical (present within a localised area or peculiar to persons in such an area). Padre Pio is an international phenomenon, of course, but our Apulian hosts are clearly proud of ´their´ saint, we know of a teacher who went...

Rome's Cathedral
Review of S. Giovanni in Laterano by
womble
Advantages: Beautiful church, important historically.
Disadvantages: You have to pay to get into the cloisters and you can't see the 10 year old italian children struggling up the holy steps on their knees!
...San Giovanni isn't necessarily top of the tourist trail in Rome. This is probably because of it's location. It isn't as central as most of the other attractions and is certainly the reason I didn't venture out to San Giovanni until my fourth or fifth visit to Rome, but I am sorry I left it so long!
San Giovanni was Rome's first church, and indeed, is still Rome's cathedral, predating St Peter's, perhaps surprisingly. It was built (or at least started!) by the Emperor Costantine and his statue stands, impressively, in the forecourt. Of course the Cathedral, having survived a number of fires, invasions and battles, has changed significantly since the Roman era, but it retains much of the grandeur and is certainly a very impressive sight.
The church itself is massive, of course, this is Italy, experts when it comes to large...

Melting in soft surrender to Mozart
Review of Mozart: Don Giovanni (Hlts) by
MAFARRIMOND
Advantages: Fun, comic, lyrical
Disadvantages: Sung in italian
...The Composer
Wolfgang Amadus Mozart was born in Salzburg on the 27th January 1756. A child protegy, he began composing from a very early age. He was at ease writing in every genre of music but it was in opera that Mozart’s chief passion lay. He composed Don Giovanni in 1787 whilst in Prague.
The Music
Don Giovanni is a comic opera dealing with the contemporary tensions of class and sex. Giovanni is a Spanish nobleman with an insatiable desire for sexual conquests. The scene is Seville, Giovanni arrives masked persued by Donna Anna who he has tried to seduce. Her father hears her cries and is killed in a duel by Giovanni. The music falls into a dramatic silence followed by a trio of male voices baritone and bass which combine to express the sadness and shock of the death. Ultimately Giovanni is consigned to eternal damnation...

Even the dogs have souls
Review of The Little World of Don Camillo - Giovanni Guareschi by
RobinLawrie
Advantages: Marvellous read
Disadvantages: none
...the goings on of Don Camillo from a large wooden cross, and frequently talks to him. It is also true that Camillo and Peppone frequently beat each other over the head with whatever comes to hand. The adversaries are heavyweights in every sense of the word, but the beatings are without any real malice, and both parties find that in the end they agree on the important issues of life.
The Little World of Don Camillo is the first book in a series of five, written by Giovanni Guareschi, which in total contains some 100 short stories. Each magical story leads you onto the next and makes you read “just one more” until time has flown and…. well I am quite sure that you know exactly what I am talking about. The five books are:
•The Little World of Don Camillo
•Don Camillo and the Prodigal Son
•Don Camillo...

Best 1 star hotel I have stayed at
Review of Express Holiday Inn San Giovanni, Rome by
gard
Advantages: Nice rooms, good breakfast with excellent coffee
Disadvantages: Located a bit out of town, no safe, next to the railway, shower curtain
...I was thrilled when I got the message that we would be going on a company trip to Rome. Since I had been there before I got the task of finding a hotel. Finding a hotel for 24 people in central Rome in October turned out to be quite a difficult task. Many of the centrally located hotels are smaller and many were fully booked. In the end we decided to stay at Express By Holiday Inn San Giovanni located at Via Assisi 53. We had to pay 125 € per room.
Arriving in Rome
We landed in Rome at about 11 am in the morning of October 21st. We walked over to the train station at Leonardo da Vinci airport also known as Fiumicino (FCO). From here you can take the Leonardo Express to Termini but since the hotel is located on the way we decided to go for a local train direction Orte-Fara Sabina for 5 € and after about 30-40 we reached the train...

Where Saints and Librarians Eat
Review of Don Giovanni by
zoe_page
Advantages: The menu options, prices and central location
Disadvantages: The hideous green curtains, and the fact the service can be a little slower than in some other places
...If I went to the library more often, I’d probably have found this place ages ago since it’s on the way from where I live in Manchester to there. Don’t get me wrong, I do read, as the ops on books show, but I generally buy rather than borrow when I’m in Manchester. Anyway, Don Giovanni’s is on Oxford St which ends with the library and town hall complex and is the continuation of Oxford Rd aka Student Street. Getting there is easy – busses stop almost outside, and St Peter’s Square Metrolink station is only as few minutes walk. It’s situated next to an easy so see cinema, and has a vivid orange canopy outside. Parking is limited if you want to leave your car for free, but there are several large car parks within a few minutes of the restaurant.
I rang up to book the day before we went...

Mamma mia - go to Limone
Review of Lake Garda (Italy) by
joannetillin
Advantages: Good weather in August, great food, lovely people, lots to see and do
Disadvantages: It was a bit TOO hot in August
...there several times. There are lots of shops selling leather goods there at bargain prices, which come highly recommended (though I got my leather jacket in Martinelli and Co in Limone, which I can truthfully say has been complimented many times!).
One afternoon we took the ferry across to Malcesine, before taking the cable car up the mountain - I can't remember its name, but it's definitely worth queuing for the view over Lake Garda.
Finally I should mention Gardaland, situated in Peschiera, which is the more enjoyable Italian answer to Alton Towers. Had it not been boiling that day I am sure I'd have enjoyed it a lot more! However, there are some great rides there, and it is worth a visit....

Diana Ross' 1995 Studio Entry
Review of Take Me Higher - Diana Ross by
IanPhillips
Advantages: The urban R&B material
Disadvantages: Some of the ballads are just routine
...In late 1995 soul music legend Diana Ross returned with her first studio project in over four years. Whilst not quite duplicating the commercial success she enjoyed in Britain with The Force Behind The Power (1991)album, it was still indeed an enduring success that rapidly swept into the U.K Top 10 Album Charts.
A series of producers are to be credited on the Take Me Higher album. These include Diana Ross herself, The Boom Brothers (a U.S Rap Group), Naranda Michael Walden (who also produced various work for another soul diva Whitney Houston), Rick Martinelli and Jon-John. Renowned producer Babyface puts his excellent production skills into full use on the more urban R&B/Hip Hop offerings (Swing It and Keep It Right There). Diana Ross obviously was wanting to hit the charts again as she once and reach that crucial younger generation...
