Glasgow - Dear Green Place
Review of Glasgow (Scotland) by  rustifer

Advantages: Cheap bus travel, free entry to many attractions, great restaurants, bars and concert venues
Disadvantages: The bars close at midnight, it's very cold in the winter

...The name Glasgow means dear green place and, as far as I'm concerned, it couldn't be more accurate. I've lived in Glasgow most of my life, except for a 10 year period during which I worked in France, Italy, Portugal, Turkey and Tunisia so I know a good thing when I see it and Glasgow is definitely one of the nicest places to live in. For a start it has more green area, i.e. parks, than any other city in Britain but for me one of the best things about it is that most of the museums and places of interest cost nothing to visit. I've had many foreign friends over to stay in Glasgow and they are always amazed by that (and the free toilet facilities!). It used to be quite expensive to get around Glasgow using public transport but now that First Bus have introduced an all day ticket, which costs as little as £1.80 at the weekend and can... Tramp-spotting
Review of Glasgow Green by  Saltire

Advantages: Historically interesting, a helluva lot of greenery, NEAR THE PEOPLE'S PALACE
Disadvantages: Drunks, tramps, prostitutes..... generally undesirable area

...Glasgow Green, on the banks of the River Clyde is one of the largest parks in the area. It is also very historical, but not to the untrained eye! Today, it goes largely unnoticed by the populace of Glasgow, due to it's location not being the most desirable or central. This is unfortunate and as part of a scientific tour (no groaning, please) that I give along with a few others in the area, I've learnt to appreciate some of the finer points. Originally used as a garden by the locals and a site for washing (there were clothes-poles in Glasgow Green several decades into the 1900's!), it is now most frequently visited by both mendicants and those wishing to see the People's Palace, a museum celebrating Glasgow and surrounding areas. Look beyond that, and you'll see it's much more than a patch of grass! To the east end of the park... Read review

Quality Relaxed Dining.
Review of The Inn on the Green by  krm123uk

Advantages: fantastic atmosphere, great food and service, reasonable price.
Disadvantages: a little far from city centre maybe

...Glasgow is certainly not short of restaurants, but make sure you try the Inn on the Green for dinner with a difference! The Inn on the Green in situated near glasgow green, templeton business centre and Marco's gym -so is very easy to find and get to. It is almost walkable distance from centre of glasgow -but there is ample parking outside the restaurant if you want to drive. The atmosphere is very relaxed with the restaurant occupying the lower ground floor of the hotel. Lit with soft lighting and candles, with comfortable and classy decor the Inn on the Green appears to be an expensive restaurant. but you would be wrong - the meals are very reasonable with starters from about £3, main courses from £6 -£12, and desserts around £4. They also do a pre theatre menu that has a good selection at good prices. The food is modern scottish... Read review

3 simply fantastic days!
Review of Leeds Festival (England) by  radarmaker

Advantages: Great music, great facilities
Disadvantages: Not great weather (sometimes)

...Leeds Festival is one of the offshoots of the fairly famous Reading Festival (the other being Glasgow Green.) Having looked at the bill beforehand, I thought I would enjoy myself. But I didn’t imagine just how good it would be. I started off on Saturday by seeing Cay and Daphne & Celeste (oh yes!) on the Main Stage, and Clint Boon Experience on the Evening Session Stage. Sunday I watched At The Drive-In, Beck and The Delgados, Monday Primal Scream, Oasis (to see if they would split up) and Grandaddy. All in all, a top bill, with facilities to match.... Read review

Walk this way
Review of Getting around in Glasgow by  Saltire

Advantages: Easy to get around, travel centres available if you get stuck
Disadvantages: Motorway queues (but what city doesn't?), moaning-faced bus drivers.

...areas, such as Glasgow Green and other ‘empty’ areas should be avoided at night, though. Walking around the city centre is pleasant and many areas such as Argyle Street, Sauchiehall Street and Buchanan Street are becoming largely pedestrianised. Also, Glasgow has a unique atmosphere which you’ll miss out on if you insist on going everywhere by bus!... Read review

The Palace for Glasgow's people
Review of People´s Palace (Glasgow) by  duskmaiden

Advantages: some great exhibits, free, the Winter Gardens
Disadvantages: Some tatty exhibits

...Glasgow, the dear green place is a city I know fairly well and love. One of the main reasons I love the city is the people. They really make the place, as they are down to earth, friendly and genuine. The Glaswegians make Glasgow. Due to this I have always wanted to go to the People’s Palace, a museum dedicated to the ordinary citizens of this wonderful city, but I have never got the chance to do so until this weekend when I was up visiting some friends in Glasgow. The People’s Palace is a social history museum dedicated to Glasgow and its population since 1750 that coincides with Glasgow’s trade in tobacco just before the first blossomings of the industrial revolution, which made Glasgow the city that it is today. I have been to a number of social history museums of varying quality (they tend to all have a mangle, washboard and outside... Read review

Green delight, with it's younger sibling Yellow
Review of Green Chartreuse by  mick101

Advantages: Completely different, strong, tasty
Disadvantages: Reassuring expensive, a bit hard to come by

...My mother of all people first introduced me to Green Chartreuse around 5 years ago! French monks make it, and it has a 'distinct' taste. It is hard to identify the ingredients, but there is definitely a hint of herb/spice. It also tends to burn on the way down... The liqueur (it probably qualifies for a spirit!) should be treated with the utmost of respect, with a strength of 55% vol.! It is reasonably rare (at least in Glasgow), but Oddbins normally stock one or two bottles and Victoria Wine will happily order it for you. However, do be prepared to pay around £35 for the bottle. If Green Chartreuse is a little too much, in either strength or taste, there is also Yellow Chartreuse available. Yellow Chartreuse is similar in taste, but it is a bit sweeter and it's (only) 40% vol. Unfortunately, I have only ever seen one outlet sell... Read review
