Ashbourne Court Hotel
Review of Ashbourne Court Hotel, Ashbourne by
blaaboy
Advantages: Prime location, bargin price
Disadvantages: Cheap fixture and fittings
...Needed somewhere on short notice for a wedding in the Ashbourne region and this hotle fitted the bill perfectly. It is ideally situated on the main street, which makes finding it easy. Checked in quite late, but still found the staff to be pleasent. Booked a double room plus breakfast for two for only 80 euros. The rooms where very spacious and included a king size bed and the usual hotel extras. Fixture and fittings where perhaps a little on the cheap side, and the lack of corridor lighting made finding your room a bit of an adventure! The breakfast was served in a nicely decorated room the following morning - good selection of hot and cold foods - fresh juices would have been nice though.
Overall, a pleasent stay in a nice hotel - and a bargin too....

The Mackworth Hotel, Derbyshire
Review of Mackworth Hotel, Derby, Derbyshire, England by
jedimasterlincoln
Advantages: Great location, warm and friendly
Disadvantages: May be out of budget, hotel rooms not suitable for disabled guests
...The Mackworth hotel is a converted and extended farmhouse situated on the edge of the medieval village of Mackworth, Derbyshire. It lies just 2 miles out of Derby City Centre with close links to the M1/M6/A38/A50.
We chose this as our wedding venue in the October of 2006, after visiting the Hotel for several meals and evenings out previously.
As well as being fully licensed for civil wedding ceremonies, the hotel boasts extensive conferencing facilities, restaurant and bar areas.
The restaurant boasts a superb carvery with a varied choice of meat and veg for a reasonable price as well as many alternatives on the menu. The hotel is surrounded by picturesque Derbyshire Countryside visible from the restaurant open plan extension.
The hotel itself has welcoming decor styled on rustic farmhouse with the main entrance to the side...

Derbyshire The place to visit
Review of Derbyshire (England) by
werewolf
Advantages: beautiful place to visit
Disadvantages: so many places to see, which do you miss out
...Derbyshire is an inland county of England, surrounded by Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and Cheshire, South Yorkshire and Staffordshire. (The border with Staffordshire is mostly formed by the River Dove.)
In the east and in the south (near the city of Derby) the county is mostly fairly low and flat. In the Northwest, however, the land rises gradually over grassy downs to the bare moorlands and grey limestone gorges of the Pennine Hills.
The highest point in the north of Derbyshire is called the High Peak (636 metres) – although this is an almost level moorland! The area round about this point is known as the Peak District, which together with part of Dovedale forms the Peak District National Park – well worth a visit. It is no longer constrained by the foot and mouth conditions – although Derbyshire County Council has issued...

Goodnight John Boy….
Review of The Izaak Walton Hotel, Dovedale by
Dudo_Perudo
Advantages: Location, Location, Location....
Disadvantages: I'm so unfit!
..."The Compleat Angler" [sic], is a Seventeenth Century converted farmhouse nestled within the Derbyshire Peaks in the village of Dovedale on the banks of the River Dove.
It has 5 meeting rooms that can accommodate from 6 to 50 delegates for conferencing/training events but the largest room can seat up to 120 guests for banqueting and has 3 of the rooms licensed for Civil Ceremonies. The hotel is also wireless enabled throughout.
The Hotel houses 34 bedrooms in total with 2 ground-floor rooms and 2 executive rooms that ensure access by people who are disabled. Each room has guaranteed en-suite facilities, Satellite TV, Radio, Hospitality Tray, Trouser Press and Iron/Ironing Board and a hairdryer.
Three of the rooms have four-poster beds and the rooms in the original farmhouse section all have the original oak beams and window seats...

Buxton great, Portland Hotel not great
Review of Portland Hotel (Buxton - Derbyshire) by
rsmith
Advantages: Close to the Pavillion Gardens
Disadvantages: Below par food, below par rooms.
...disappointment.
The coffee was fine; the tea, when it came, was ordinary tea, not the Earl Grey which we'd asked for (and which we knew they could do, as we'd had it at breakfast).
Usual price is £75.00 for a double room, £55.00 for a single room with breakfast.
It's a bit of a rip-off, overall, I'd say.
The town can get very busy in the Summer, and especially in July (Buxton festival), but even if all the other hotels are full - don't stay at the Portland if you can avoid it, and definitely don't eat there.

Temple Hotel, Matlock Bath
Review of Temple Hotel, Matlock Bath by
RClure
Advantages: lovely views with quality accommodation
Disadvantages: small ensuite, not the cheapest
...We recently visited this hotel for the third time in seven years. Over this time the ownership has changed but the service and overall hotel experience has not. Our first visit was back in 1999 when my husband proposed to me so it has very fond memories for us both and our recent visit included our two year old son. For the purpose of this review, I will base it on my recent visit only unless stated otherwise.
*** HOTEL OVERVIEW ***
Rated three RAC stars, the Georgian hotel is set in two acres of Derbyshire hillside and has spectacular views over Derwent Valley. Built back in the 1750's, the hotel boasts to have been visited by Queen Victoria when she was a princess as well as Lord Byron.
*** LOCATION ***
It is very easy to find. The hotel is situated just off the A6 on the south side of Matlock Bath in Derbyshire. Turn off...

East Lodge Country House Hotel, Derbyshire
Review of East Lodge Country House Hotel, Matlock by
sweston
Advantages: beautiful relaxed luxurious surroundings
Disadvantages: wanted to stay more than one night
...Stayed here 9th December 2006.
Booked a Saturday night here for my husband's 39th birthday as a treat (for both of us)! We only live about half an hour away in Chesterfield and had heard very good reports about the place. We were not disappointed.
We arrived at around 4pm and after we had been shown to our 'executive room' (can't remember name but it was above the reception/conservatory area). Driving up to the Hotel, it looked spectacular as it was all decorated for Christmas - looked beautiful. We decided to leave our bags and go back down to the bar in the conservatory and have a drink before going to change for dinner. Very relaxing place - a few hours away from two 7 and 9 year old 'teenagers' at home. After dressing for dinner we went back down to the bar for a gin and tonic and to order from the fantastic menu. So much...

The Peak of Perfection!
Review of Derbyshire (England) by
tange
Advantages: A beautiful and varied place to live.
Disadvantages: Can't do it justice in just one review.
..., shops and picturesque cottages around this focal point. It is famous for its associations with Charles Cotton, a close friend of Isaac Walton and co-author of The Complete Angler. You will find Hartington about 12 miles from Ashbourne.
Other places of note include Newbold (a place just on the outskirts of Chesterfield and worthy of mention because I was born there), Old Brampton (just outside Chesterfield and home to a rather oddly numbered Church clock) and Edale (the village at the start of the Pennine Way).
I love living in Derbyshire! It is full of history, interesting customs and friendly people ~ it also has its fair share of excellent pubs too. There really is FAR too much to tell you about it just one review so the best advice I can give is to get out there and explore the county yourself. I have lived here all my life...

Good business hotel, showing it's age
Review of Renaissance Derby Nottingham Hotel, Derby by
fubaringly
Advantages: comfortable and clean
Disadvantages: seems to be some cost cutting going on
...This hotel is no longer the Renaissance, it has been sold by Marriott to a group called Principal Hayley Group. It is now called The Derbyshire Hotel.
The Derbyshire Hotel is just off Junction 28 of the M1, it has conference facilities so is usually used by business people or companies needing a meeting room. Across the road is a touchbase (a building to hire meeting rooms), a premier inn and the attached Brewers Fayre. So cheaper competition close by.
When staying you can use the heated indoor pool & a small gym for free. I've never used these so can't comment but it's good to have the facilities available.
I've stayed a few times both before and after the switch of ownership. The very first time I stayed I did feel it was a little tired looking, a little old fashioned and in need of a refurb.

Charles Cotton Hotel
Review of Charles Cotton Hotel, Buxton by
Gabler
Advantages: Good for lovers of the country and dog owners
Disadvantages: Meals a bit pricey
...I stayed at this Hotel for one night last week. I was looking for a hotel in Derbyshire where I could meet up with my brother and also where we could take our dogs. It is not actually in Buxton, but a village called Hartington which is some miles south of Buxton. I arrived in the Village at around miday and was suprised to see the smount of people in the village square where the hotel is situated.a
The staff greeted me in a friendly manner and I sat out in the large beer garden at the back of the hotel to wait for my brother to arrive. There are quite a number of tables outside at the front of the hotel and a quite large car park at the rear where the beer garden is situated..
We were staying in the annex to the hotel and the bedrooms were large and well decorated with usual fascilities of an en suite bathroom and t.v. and tea...
